Ch. 181Provocation
Key plot points and events
- At the end of Konoha’s public trial, Yongye announces the verdict: Hiruzen Sarutobi, Mitokado Homura, Utatane Koharu, and Aburame Ryoma are sentenced to immediate execution. Orochimaru and Kimimaro are spared for now and offered a chance to atone through service.
- The four condemned are publicly beheaded with the Dog-Head Guillotine. Their heads are displayed, and the crowd’s reaction makes clear that Konoha’s leadership has changed: Yongye’s era has begun.
- Shisui leaves the trial feeling proud of his role in exposing the former officials and capturing Orochimaru.
- In an alley, Shisui encounters Itachi’s Crow Clone. Itachi accuses Shisui of betraying Hiruzen and claims Yongye is a threat foretold by the Great Toad Sage. Shisui rejects the prophecy and urges Itachi to surrender.
- Itachi insists that Hiruzen and the others were forced to confess, and claims Yongye—not Itachi—destroyed the Shimura Clan. The exchange ends with their opposing accusations unresolved.
Character developments
- Yongye consolidates his rule by delivering a severe public verdict, presenting the executions as a warning and a break with the old order.
- Shisui is confident in his allegiance to Yongye, whom he believes can reform Konoha. He sees his actions as loyalty to the village, not betrayal.
- Itachi remains committed to stopping Yongye, trusting the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy despite Shisui’s objections. He presents himself as wrongly accused and resists Shisui’s offer of clemency.
- Aburame Ryoma accepts his death calmly, having chosen it in exchange for his family’s safety.
- Hiruzen dies facing the loss of his reputation and descendants, overwhelmed by regret and despair.
