Background / History
Previous Life in the Tang Sect
Granduncle Tang Lan brought Tang San into the Bashu Tang Sect’s outer sect, which he regarded as his only home. Frustrated by the restrictions of outer-disciple status, he secretly entered the scripture repository and stole the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record at nine years old 48.
By twenty-nine, he had spent twenty years studying the Buddha’s Fury Tang Lotus. His memories include forging hidden weapons, cultivating the stolen techniques, being discovered and pursued by sect elders, and leaping from a cliff 22 48.
Enrollment at Nuoding Academy
In his current life, Tang San grows up in poverty: his family’s food money is spent on liquor, and he arrives at the academy wearing patched clothing. A gatekeeper stops him because of his appearance, but meeting Yu Xiaogang prevents him from retaliating 1.
He becomes Yu Xiaogang’s disciple and joins Dorm Seven as a work-study student. He has already defeated Wang Sheng by the time he leaves to obtain his first Soul Ring, and he fiercely rejects Wang Sheng’s criticism of his teacher 4 6.
First Soul Hunt
Yu Xiaogang accompanies him to Soul Hunting Forest, seeking a ring that can demonstrate his Martial Soul theories. Their prolonged search leaves them in the forest overnight, where a four-hundred-year-old Mandala Snake pursues them 7 11.
Tang San initially gains the advantage through Tang Sect techniques, but his already-injured Purple Demon Eye fails at a crucial moment. The snake’s venom damages his eyes, while Yu Xiaogang is also badly poisoned. Tang San briefly aims his Silent Sleeve Arrow at his teacher before deciding that killing him would damage his own reputation 7 8.
Following Yu Xiaogang’s untested Martial Soul Mimicry Theory, he instead absorbs a Corrosive Swamp Venomfang Python ring. His Blue Silver Grass gains toughness but becomes rotten-looking, foul-smelling, brittle, and effectively poisonless in ordinary combat 9.
Tang San carries Yu Xiaogang out of the forest and sells his storage Soul Tool to pay for treatment. He destroys some hidden weapons rather than leave them available for others to examine, then spends several days hauling his teacher’s cart back to Nuoding City 12 14.
Wish to Restore His Eyes
Treatment and a month of Purple Demon Eye practice fail to eliminate the venom’s effects. Continued training worsens his vision until even ordinary activities are affected 12 20.
Despite witnessing Yu Xiaogang’s disastrous wish, Tang San pays Xu Yuan approximately fifty Gold Soul Coins from his teacher’s savings and wishes for his eyes to return to their pre-injury condition. His vision recovers, but Purple Demon Eye falls from Micro-Perception to entry-level Panoramic View 20 21.
Tang San considers the exchange worthwhile. Unknown to him, the tree repairs his eyes using the life force of his Blue Silver Emperor bloodline, takes the remaining bloodline origin and its “Emperor’s Throne,” and extracts Spiritual Origin containing his memories. Xu Yuan consequently gains access to the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 21 22.
Failed Vindication and Soul Bone Conflict
At Level 13, Tang San agrees to fight the Level 11 Wang Sheng to vindicate Yu Xiaogang’s theories. His sluggish Blue Silver Grass and his teacher’s repeated instructions leave him cornered; the dean intervenes before Wang Sheng’s next charge lands 37 38 39.
During a later journey, Yu Xiaogang loses his right leg and gives Tang San his exceptional Thousand-Year Soul Bone. Tang San refines it and promises to become the strongest Soul Master and prove his teacher’s theories 43 45.
When Yu Xiaogang tries to end his blacksmith work, Tang San proposes a wager: victory within one incense stick will preserve his forging time, while defeat will mean unconditional obedience. Yu Xiaogang changes the opponent from Wang Sheng to the academy’s strongest student, Xu Yuan 46 47.
Tang San then discovers that the soul bone’s passive stabilization prevents the sharp turns required by Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, fracturing his ankle when he forces the technique. He requests another wish to fix the conflict, but Yu Xiaogang refuses and redirects him toward Burst Step 48 50.
Father’s Absence and Intensified Training
Tang San returns to Holy Soul Village and finds that Tang Hao has disappeared without leaving a letter. Yu Xiaogang reassures him that his father has greater matters to accomplish and that they will meet again once Tang San becomes stronger 59.
His teacher establishes a demanding schedule of memorization, theoretical instruction, simulated combat, medicinal baths, coordination drills, written reports, and cultivation in place of sleep. Burst Step begins at ten thousand repetitions per day and is later doubled after Yu Xiaogang obtains sponsorship 59 62.
Appearance
- Patched clothing: His poverty is visible in the clothes he wears upon enrollment 1.
- Violet eyes during cultivation: Purple Demon Eye produces a deep violet gleam or luminous purple hue 12 62.
- Venom-damaged eyes: Following the Mandala Snake encounter, his eyes become bloodred and his vision is periodically obscured by gray haze; the wish later removes that haze 8 12 21.
- Travel-worn condition: On returning with Yu Xiaogang, he is covered in dust, with worn shoulder fabric and a hole in one shoe’s sole 14.
Personality
Tang San is disciplined and protective of the Tang Sect’s legacy. He treats Purple Demon Eye as a practice requiring perseverance over years, destroys hidden weapons to prevent outsiders from coveting his secrets, and resists his teacher when restrictions threaten his inherited techniques 6 12 48 62.
His devotion to Yu Xiaogang repeatedly survives serious setbacks. He defends his teacher against dormmates, pays for meals and treatment, transports him after injury, and promises to vindicate his theories. Nevertheless, the first hunt provokes intense resentment and even a momentary impulse to kill him 4 8 12 35 40 45.
He is proud of his twin Martial Souls and his access to theoretical instruction. He privately belittles Xu Yuan’s prospects as a support-type Soul Master and assumes that an ordinary Soul Master would fail to recognize a soul bone’s value. After benefiting from Xu Yuan’s wish, he instead considers cultivating that relationship so Xu Yuan can become an asset 20 21 42.
Tang San is attracted to Xiao Wu and jealous of her closeness with Xu Yuan. He becomes nervous when she addresses him, dislikes watching them grow closer, and later frames his interest as wanting a cute sworn younger sister 4 6 37.
Abilities & Skills
Blue Silver Grass
His primary combat Martial Soul uses Blue Silver Entanglement, gained from the Corrosive Swamp Venomfang Python’s ring 9.
- Produces multiple strands that bind targets or attempt to trip an opponent by the feet 9 39.
- Inherits increased toughness, but also brittleness, dark green blotches, a rotten appearance, and a sour, fishy stench 9.
- Fails to inherit useful combat venom. Poisoning through its odor would require an ordinary target to embrace it and inhale for an entire day 9.
- Responds too slowly to reliably follow Wang Sheng’s evasions 39.
- Continues to suffer corrosion from the python’s toxins. After the bloodline origin is extracted, Tang San mistakes the disappearance of its weakness sensation for recovery; the Martial Soul has actually become numb 39.
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang San’s second Martial Soul is the Clear Sky Hammer. Yu Xiaogang regards the right leg soul bone’s weight-stabilizing effect as a useful complement to its power 43.
- Its presence makes Tang San a twin-Martial-Soul wielder 6 43.
- Tang Hao considers the danger of the twin Martial Souls tearing Tang San’s body apart a problem that still requires a solution 23.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
A cultivation method retained from the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 2 22.
- Refines Innate Qi from birth, helping accelerate his early Purple Demon Eye development 22.
- Reaches an initial bottleneck before his first Soul Ring 2 20.
- Is circulated while he attempts to manage the Mandala Snake venom and helps him recover physical strength during exhausting travel 8 19.
Purple Demon Eye
An eye-training art cultivated using the purple qi appearing around dawn 12 62.
- Reaches Micro-Perception, its second stage, by age six 21 22.
- Before his wish, prolonged use causes gray haze that persists even after deactivation and requires closed-eye rest 12.
- Regresses to entry-level Panoramic View when the Wish-Granting Tree restores his eyes 21.
- Remains part of his cultivation routine despite Yu Xiaogang’s increasingly controlling training regime 62.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
Tang Sect footwork used for rapid changes of position and close-range evasion 8 19.
- Lets him dodge the Mandala Snake and Wang Sheng 8 39.
- Excels at short-distance shifts rather than sustained long-distance sprinting 19.
- Becomes incompatible with his right leg soul bone: his body changes direction while the bone roots his right foot, concentrating the collision of forces in his ankle 48.
Burst Step
An alternative movement technique emphasizing explosive straight-line acceleration 50.
- Tang San accepts that its acceleration is not necessarily inferior to Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track 50.
- Yu Xiaogang requires extensive repetition and medicinal baths, later demanding that Tang San incorporate it into everyday movement 59 62.
Tang Sect Combat Arts
Tang San combines inherited techniques with hidden weapons rather than relying solely on Soul Skills 7 38.
- Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon: Used to twist his body in midair while evading venom; he later plans to use it covertly in his wagered match 7 47.
- Mysterious Jade Hand: Prepared as a means of receiving Wang Sheng’s claw attack head-on, though Yu Xiaogang’s interference stops him from completing the attempt 39.
- Auditory tracking: Locates the Mandala Snake by sound when his vision fails 7.
- Poison experience: Draws on his former life’s daily contact with poisons to assess venom injuries, although this does not allow him to detect the corrosion of his Martial Soul 8 12 39.
Forging and Hidden Weapons
His previous-life expertise includes manufacturing hidden weapons and researching the Buddha’s Fury Tang Lotus 22 48.
- Uses a Silent Sleeve Arrow against the Mandala Snake 7.
- Works at a forge in his current life to continue producing Tang Sect hidden weapons 37 46.
- Tries to conceal the full extent of his inherited abilities from Yu Xiaogang and the dean during combat 39 47.
- Regards losing his forging time as a direct threat to his hidden-weapon development 46.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Silent Sleeve Arrow — Wrist-mounted hidden weapon used during the first soul hunt; briefly aimed at Yu Xiaogang during Tang San’s anger after the poisoning 7 8.
- Short Sword — Given by Yu Xiaogang and used against the Mandala Snake and to kill the Corrosive Swamp Venomfang Python 7 9.
- Twenty-Four Bridges Bright Moonlit Night — Storage Soul Tool holding his hidden weapons and supplies. Sold after fewer than three days of ownership to fund treatment 8 12.
- Exceptional Thousand-Year Right Leg Soul Bone — Given to him after Yu Xiaogang loses his right leg. Passively stabilizes his center of gravity but obstructs sudden turns; its active Soul Skill is not identified in the provided passages 43 47 48.
- Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record — The stolen scripture underlying his Tang Sect techniques. His extracted Spiritual Origin exposes its contents to Xu Yuan 22 48.
Relationships
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher, caretaker’s dependent, and the central authority in his cultivation. Tang San repeatedly defends him, while Yu increasingly restricts his forging and independent training 4 35 46 59 62.
- Tang Hao — Father. Secretly watches over him and confronts Yu Xiaogang about the eye injury and cart-pulling; Tang San later worries when he finds him missing from Holy Soul Village 11 14 23 59.
- Xu Yuan — Dormmate and wish-granter who restores his eyes. Tang San alternates between jealousy, condescension, and plans to secure his support, unaware that Xu Yuan has obtained his bloodline origin and Tang Sect knowledge 20 21 22 42.
- Xiao Wu — Dormmate and object of attraction. Her closeness with Xu Yuan causes him jealousy; she warns him against making a wish after Yu Xiaogang’s experience 4 6 20 37.
- Wang Sheng — Dormmate and combat rival. Tang San initially defeats him, resents his criticism of Yu Xiaogang, and later struggles against him despite possessing higher Soul Power 4 6 37 39.
- Nuoding Academy’s dean — Intervenes to stop the troubled match with Wang Sheng, helps arrange Yu Xiaogang’s treatment, and attempts to moderate the teacher’s restrictions on Tang San 39 45 46.
- Granduncle Tang Lan — Brought him into the Tang Sect’s outer sect in his previous life 48.
