Background / History

Yu Xiaogang is the son of Yu Yuanzhen, the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s patriarch and its only Titled Douluo—a Level 95 Power Attack System cultivator. His father supplied rare medicines and extensive resources to support his cultivation despite his Martial Soul’s malignant mutation 16.

In his youth, he traveled the continent with Flender and Liu Erlong. Although he later tells Tang San that his companions were Soul Saints above Level 70, the narration clarifies that they reached that rank only afterward 12 14 16.

His theoretical knowledge draws heavily from Spirit Hall’s library. The narration identifies Spirit Hall as the source of theories he presents as his own; after leaving the library, his opportunities to study other Martial Souls become severely limited 13 16 46 49.

He becomes Nouding Academy’s guest advisor after helping its Dean select a Fourth Soul Ring. The Dean cultivates the connection partly because of Yu Xiaogang’s clan background and possible ties to Spirit Hall, rather than unquestioning faith in his theories 11 14 37.

Appearance

  • Close-cropped hair: Has a crew cut or buzz cut 38 42.
  • Stiff expression: Yu Tianheng’s rigid facial muscles and limited expressions are described as strongly resembling his uncle’s 64.
  • Post–third-ring changes: Develops a rounder face and short, coarse whiskers extending from his sideburns, inherited from the Nethermist Lizard 42.
  • Martial Soul possession: Transforms into a bipedal pig-like figure with a swollen waist and shorter, thicker limbs 18 19.
  • Later disability: Loses his right leg to Medusa and subsequently moves with two crutches 43 46 48.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang combines deep insecurity about his cultivation with an inflated sense of his theoretical authority. He repeatedly calls his theories “invincible,” judges others by their rank or innate talent, and considers the Level 42 Dean only barely worthy of his guidance. He dismisses Xiao Wu’s potential despite her innate full Soul Power because he regards Tang San’s twin Martial Souls as superior 12 38 64.

His public dignity strongly influences his decisions. He avoids asking other Soul Masters for help after disparaging them, forces himself to stand before entering Nuoding City to conceal his disability, and pretends to be unconscious when academy-wide ridicule becomes overwhelming 8 14 15.

Tang San is both his cherished disciple and the person through whom he hopes to validate his theories. This investment becomes increasingly controlling: he restricts Tang San’s forging, imposes extensive memorization and combat drills, and threatens to destroy the Wish-Granting Tree rather than let Tang San use it without permission 46 48 59.

Even after severe setbacks, he redirects his attention toward theoretical recognition. Following the loss of his leg, he quickly becomes excited about publishing a new observation on surviving limb Soul Bone removal while petrified. When another author publishes it first, he repeatedly reports the alleged plagiarism to Spirit Hall 45 46 50 61.

Abilities & Skills

Martial Soul Theory

Yu Xiaogang is known for the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul Theory, also called the Ten Core Theories of Martial Souls 7 16.

  • Recognizes Tang San’s twin Martial Souls at a glance, giving Tang San a reason to retain faith in him after their failed hunt 8.
  • Identifies Soul Beasts and explains their habitats, venom, attributes, and possible Soul Ring benefits 7 9 12.
  • Selects Soul Rings for Tang San and the academy Dean, favoring Control System applications 14 37 38.
  • Claims Control System Soul Masters are effectively unbeatable in single combat unless countered by a particular Martial Soul 38.
  • Misjudges practical encounters: the Mandala Snake pursues longer than he predicts, and Tang San fails to secure the effortless victory he promises against Wang Sheng 8 38 39.
  • Begins developing a wish-granting theory after seeing a Level 10 Soul Master’s Martial Soul fulfill a higher-ranked cultivator’s wish 22.

Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao originally manifests outside Yu Xiaogang’s body. After his Level 30 wish, it instead possesses him and produces a pig-like transformation 8 19.

  • Shared vulnerability: Poison injected into Luo Sanpao also poisons Yu Xiaogang 8.
  • First Soul Skill — Heaven-Shattering, Earth-Rending Sanpao: Releases a forceful gas blast. Its original ring came from a Hundred-Year Thunder-Type Sub-Dragon Soul Beast 19 42.
  • Sleep-inducing gas: Uses the command “Fart like a cloud of smoke, put them to sleep, Luo Sanpao!” against the Mandala Snake, but fails to stop its pursuit 7.
  • Second-ring specialization: A ring from a Phantom Mist Ferret shifts his development from Power Attack to Control System 42.
  • Post-mutation drawback: His first skill erupts directly from his own body, expelling bodily waste along with gas and blasting Tang San away 19.

Third Soul Ring

Yu Xiaogang chooses the Nethermist Lizard as a three-part gamble intended to improve his Martial Soul 43.

  • Its mouth-based attacks might change the outlet of his Soul Skills.
  • Its faint fire-dragon blood might trigger a beneficial mutation.
  • Its neurotoxin might provide a useful Control System ability if the other possibilities fail.

The supplied passages do not establish his third Soul Skill’s actual effect 42 43.

Miststep

Miststep comes from his former Thousand-Year right-leg Soul Bone 42.

  • Slightly strengthens the leg’s tendons and bones.
  • Stabilizes his center of gravity and redirects impact into the ground.
  • Consumes Soul Power to increase the weight of his footfalls.
  • Enables a powerful flying kick that knocks a Thousand-Year Medusa away 43.
  • Is lost when Medusa shatters his right leg and the Soul Bone is expelled 43.

Combat Instruction

  • Directs Tang San’s movements during combat, including ordering him to remain stationary and rely on Blue Silver Entanglement 38.
  • Teaches Burst Step as an explosive straight-line alternative to Tang San’s unusable footwork 48 50.
  • Prescribes 10,000 Burst Step repetitions daily, alongside Soul Beast recitation, written recall, analysis of historical Titled Douluos, and imagined combat practice 59.

Equipment / Items

  • Soul Rings: Two Yellow rings and one pale-purple Thousand-Year ring after reaching Level 31. He retains all three rings after his cultivation falls to Level 21 42 61.
  • Thousand-Year right-leg Soul Bone — former: Provides Miststep; expelled during Medusa’s attack and subsequently given to Tang San 42 43.
  • Wheelchair and four-wheeled cart — former: Used during his recovery from Mandala Snake poisoning. Tang San pulls the cart back to Nuoding City; Yu Xiaogang orders it discarded before entering the academy 11 13 14.
  • Crutches: Used after the permanent loss of his right leg 46 48.
  • Ring-shaped Storage Soul Tool: Scarface leaves it with 500 Gold Soul Coins intended for Tang San’s cultivation resources 62.
  • Research papers and report letters: Records Martial Soul observations and repeatedly writes to Spirit Hall accusing Dao Long of plagiarism 22 45 50 61.

Relationships

  • Tang San — Disciple, caregiver, and principal practitioner of his theories. Yu Xiaogang gives him the recovered right-leg Soul Bone, but increasingly controls his training and restricts his independent activities 4 13 43 46 59.
  • Yu Yuanzhen — Father and clan patriarch; supplies the expensive resources supporting Yu Xiaogang’s early cultivation 16.
  • Yu Tianheng — Nephew; their stiff expressions and facial features are explicitly compared 64.
  • Flender and Liu Erlong — Former traveling companions. He hopes his advancement will let him face them confidently again and later calls out for them in distress after Scarface’s assault 14 42 62.
  • Nouding Academy Dean — Patron and creditor. Yu Xiaogang owes him 500 Gold Soul Coins by the second hunting trip; the Dean later begins distancing himself 40 46 61.
  • Tang Hao — Tang San’s father and an admired Titled Douluo. Tang Hao confronts him over Tang San’s injuries, cart-pulling, and exposure to the risks of wishes 23.
  • Xu Yuan — Grants his Level 30 breakthrough. Yu Xiaogang unsuccessfully tries to recruit him, then later forbids him from granting Tang San wishes without consent 16 18 48.
  • Wang Sheng — Vocal critic who warns Tang San against becoming his disciple. Yu Xiaogang tries to use Tang San’s match against him to restore his reputation 4 37 38.
  • Dao Long — Author Yu Xiaogang accuses of stealing his unpublished observation about petrification and limb Soul Bone removal 45 46.
  • Scarface — Soul King who threatens Tang San to coerce Yu Xiaogang and sexually assaults him. Yu Xiaogang later accepts the money Scarface leaves while privately vowing revenge 61 62.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Tang San’s First Soul Hunt

Yu Xiaogang takes Tang San into the Soul Hunting Forest to obtain a ring that will demonstrate his theories. He seeks a roughly four-hundred-year snake with strong venom and toughness, despite doubting his ability to defeat one 7.

A Mandala Snake overwhelms Luo Sanpao, poisoning Yu Xiaogang and injuring Tang San’s eyes. While struggling to suppress the poison, Yu Xiaogang identifies a roughly two-hundred-year Corrosive Swamp Venomfang Python. Tang San kills it, and Yu Xiaogang collapses as his disciple begins absorbing its ring 7 8 9.

Unable to return normally, he sends the Dean a misleading letter claiming that special research requires an extended stay. Tang San eventually hauls him home on a crude cart, only for both to face public mockery and criticism over the disastrous trip 11 13 14 15.

Level 30 Wish and Public Humiliation

Yu Xiaogang bids 200 Gold Soul Coins for a wish and asks to reach Level 30. The wish succeeds, but secretly extracts most of his stored medicinal energy and his Golden Sacred Dragon essence 15 16 18.

Mistaking Luo Sanpao’s change for a possible dragon transformation, he publicly activates possession and becomes pig-like instead. His attempt to test his first Soul Skill produces an uncontrolled eruption that strikes Tang San. He subsequently stays in his office and relies on Tang San to bring meals 18 19 35.

Third Ring and Medusa Attack

After seeking another wish slot, Yu Xiaogang travels with Tang San and the Dean to the Star Dou Great Forest. He obtains a Nethermist Lizard ring and right-leg Soul Bone, reaching Level 31 and briefly gaining effective combat strength through Miststep 35 37 40 42.

During a Medusa attack, his successful opening kick makes him overconfident. He ignores the Dean’s warning not to pursue and is struck by Medusa’s petrifying attack. His right leg shatters, his Soul Bone is expelled, and he falls to Level 21. He gives the bone to Tang San and urges him to become the continent’s strongest Soul Master 43.

Plagiarism Dispute and Training Restrictions

While recovering, Yu Xiaogang discovers that Dao Long has already published the survival principle he intended to claim. He returns to Nuoding City determined to report the alleged plagiarism, but repeated letters receive no reply 45 46 61.

He then makes Tang San’s training increasingly restrictive, banning forging and refusing a wish that might resolve the conflict between Tang San’s Soul Bone and footwork. His own cultivation remains stagnant at Level 21 46 48 50.

Scarface’s Coercion

Scarface enters his office at night and uses threats against Tang San to prevent Yu Xiaogang from escaping or seeking help. After the assault, Yu Xiaogang is distressed and physically injured, but resolves to continue training Tang San and prove his theories 61 62.

Scarface leaves 500 Gold Soul Coins for Tang San’s cultivation. Yu Xiaogang privately vows revenge, then resumes enforcing his disciple’s schedule; the narration explicitly describes his desire for control as intensifying after the assault 62.
