Background
According to Li Qiu, Tang San originated in the Bashu Martial Arts World. After being caught stealing his sect’s ultimate techniques, he jumped from a cliff and subsequently entered the Douluo World as Tang Hao’s son. Li Qiu explicitly presents the Asura God King’s involvement in bringing him across worlds as a guess, rather than a confirmed explanation 32.
Li Qiu says Yu Xiaogang recognized Tang San’s twin Martial Souls from information about him and persuaded him to become his disciple. Tang San himself regards this apprenticeship as exceptionally fortunate and treats his teacher’s knowledge with deep trust 17 42.
Before attending Shrek Academy, Tang San had been undefeated at Notting Academy. At Shrek, Li Qiu’s ability to defeat stronger opponents challenges his previous confidence in his own standing 26.
Personality
Tang San is intensely loyal to Yu Xiaogang. He proudly introduces his teacher as a future world-famous Grandmaster, repeats his theories as authoritative truths, and becomes furious when Li Qiu humiliates him. After Yu Xiaogang coughs up blood during their argument, Tang San threatens to fight Li Qiu to the death if anything happens to his teacher 17 41 48.
He is competitive and struggles to accept being outperformed. After losing the race to Suotuo City, he initially accuses Li Qiu of cheating or taking a shortcut, then demands to see the movement technique responsible. Its demonstration leaves him envious of how far it surpasses his own footwork 29 30.
His attachment to Xiao Wu also fuels his rivalry with Li Qiu. He is upset when she favors Li Qiu’s movement technique over his own and repeatedly tries to stop her from joining Li Qiu in the Soul-Guide Car 34 36 56.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer, alongside innate full Soul Power 30.
- Blue Silver Grass: His current plant Martial Soul. Li Qiu says it will awaken into the Blue Silver Emperor and dramatically improve his appearance 30.
- Clear Sky Hammer: His second Martial Soul, which Yu Xiaogang deliberately keeps without Soul Rings during his early development 39.
- Long-term cultivation plan: Yu Xiaogang predicts that reaching level ninety with eighteen Soul Rings will reveal the full strength of Tang San’s twin Martial Souls. His claim that nobody at the same tier could then defeat Tang San is a prediction, not a demonstrated result 39.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
A movement technique taken from the Tang Sect that allows Tang San to move at exceptional speed and produce a blur of afterimages 27 28 30.
- Forces Zhao Wuji, using level-twenty-six Soul Power, to run roughly half the course before catching him 27 28.
- Is decisively outperformed by Li Qiu’s Shrink Earth to an Inch during the race to Suotuo City 29 30.
- Tang San offers to teach it to Xiao Wu, but she declines because she prefers Li Qiu’s technique 34.
Hidden Weapons
Tang San carries numerous hidden weapons. Li Qiu identifies their principal strengths as concealed strikes, surprise attacks, and poison 24 64.
- Lethal combat: Tang San believes he could attempt to defeat Dai Mubai if fighting with his life on the line; Li Qiu understands this as a reference to his hidden weapons rather than ordinary sparring ability 24.
- Military value: In Li Qiu’s future account, these weapons can strengthen lower-ranked Soul Masters and Soul Elders, helping explain Qian Renxue’s repeated attempts to recruit him 64.
- Restraint: He nearly draws hidden weapons after Li Qiu humiliates Yu Xiaogang, but ultimately does not use them 41.
Guanyin’s Tears
A supreme Tang Sect hidden weapon described in Li Qiu’s account of Tang San’s future battle against Qian Renxue 66.
- Can pierce divine bodies and cause devastating internal injuries 66.
- Penetrates the Angel God Armor and Qian Renxue’s heart, severely injuring her divine body 66.
- Requires Tang San to gather strength while pretending to struggle against her attacks; he releases it when her vigilance drops near the wager’s time limit 66.
Spiritual Power and Observation
Spiritual power is identified as one of Tang San’s specialties 13.
- In the reported future, he recognizes the flaw left in Qian Renxue’s godhood by her unresolved obsession with him and remembers it for a later confrontation 67.
Forging
Tang San possesses considerable forging skill and initially believes that studying Li Qiu’s Soul-Guide Car might let him build something similar 36.
- Seeing the car fly makes him recognize that its construction exceeds his abilities 36.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Joining Shrek Academy
Tang San arrives alongside Xiao Wu after having fought Dai Mubai at the Rose Hotel the previous day. When Xiao Wu exposes Dai Mubai’s behavior with the blonde twins, Tang San supports her account despite feeling awkward about their conflict with an older student 9.
During the entrance assessment, he initially organizes Ning Rongrong as support and Zhu Zhuqing as an additional attacker alongside himself and Xiao Wu. Zhu Zhuqing and Ning Rongrong refuse the fourth test, prompting Zhao Wuji to offer admission without fighting. Tang San follows Xiao Wu’s decision to withdraw, and they join Shrek Academy 11.
Rivalry with Li Qiu
Tang San rejects the possibility that Li Qiu’s second Soul Ring could be two thousand years old because it contradicts Yu Xiaogang’s prescribed limit. Li Qiu displays the ring directly, forcing him to confront evidence against his teacher’s theory 17.
After Li Qiu defeats Dai Mubai and becomes captain, Tang San challenges him in a race with the captaincy at stake. He loses to both Li Qiu and Zhao Wuji, then witnesses Li Qiu’s movement technique firsthand 24 26 27 28 29 30.
Yu Xiaogang later arranges a spar between Tang San and Li Qiu for half a month afterward. Tang San resolves to defeat Li Qiu, while his teacher hopes that obtaining a third Soul Ring will put him ahead. No result for the proposed spar is supplied 48 61.
Great Soul Arena
Tang San participates in the academy’s Soul Fighting training. Matched against Zhu Zhuqing, he exchanges several moves with her before she recognizes that she cannot win and concedes 54.
Future Conflict with Spirit Hall
- Source: These events are recounted by Li Qiu to the chat group. They are not shown as completed events in Tang San’s current storyline 30 62 65 66 67.
| Event | Tang San’s involvement |
|---|---|
| Continental Elite Soul Master Tournament | After Xiao Wu’s hundred-thousand-year soul beast identity is exposed, Tang Hao intervenes at Spirit Hall to save her and Tang San 62. |
| Heaven Dou Palace Coup | Brings Poison Douluo, Yang Wudi, and others to rescue Xue Ye, obstructing Qian Renxue’s attempt to seize the throne 65. |
| Negotiations with Qian Renxue | Pretends to consider recruitment and demands the execution of those who hunted him and Xiao Wu, including Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo. The prolonged confrontation lasts until reinforcements arrive, forcing Qian Renxue to withdraw 65. |
| Simultaneous ring absorption | Survives absorbing three high-age rings while Qian Renxue watches without attacking his defenseless state 65 66. |
| One-incense-stick wager | Endures Qian Renxue’s attacks under an agreement forbidding divine artifacts, then severely wounds her with Guanyin’s Tears. She honors the wager and grants him three days to escape 66. |
| Spirit Hall’s destruction | Li Qiu identifies Tang San as the person who ultimately destroys Spirit Hall and kills the future Bibi Dong 30 44. |
Li Qiu’s revelations make Tang San a target for the younger Qian Renxue, who resolves to prevent that future by killing him before he grows stronger. She also considers having Tang Hao killed before Tang San is born in her era 31 38 62.
