Background / History

Clan upbringing

Yu Xiaogang grew up as the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s young sect master. His martial soul underwent a malignant mutation into Luo Sanpao, a creature described as resembling both a pig and a dog. Despite his low innate Soul Power, the clan continued investing resources in his cultivation. He insisted on a Control Path, acquiring skills described by Li Qiu as “Fart Control” and “Poison Mist Control” 3.

According to Li Qiu, the expectations placed on Yu Xiaogang turned into disappointment over his limited strength. He pursued recognition as a theoretical grandmaster to make those who had looked down on him reconsider their judgment 44.

Bibi Dong and Spirit Hall’s library

In the history recounted by Li Qiu, Yu Xiaogang met Bibi Dong during her travels and became romantically involved with her. She brought him into Spirit Hall’s Library Pavilion, where they studied martial souls, Soul Beasts, and the secrets of twin martial souls. After Qian Xunji discovered their relationship and confined her, Yu Xiaogang left without searching for her 9 10 43.

Li Qiu interprets this relationship as a means of obtaining library access rather than genuine devotion. Qian Renxue later repeats that accusation in a letter to the adult Bibi Dong. Bibi Dong initially defends the purity of his love, but acknowledges that he had never actually done anything for her 42 43.

Golden Iron Triangle

Yu Xiaogang subsequently traveled with Flender and Liu Erlong. They became sworn siblings and formed the Golden Iron Triangle, with Yu Xiaogang developing and leading their Trinity Martial Soul Fusion Skill 42.

Liu Erlong fell in love with him, and they planned to marry with Flender as their witness. According to Li Qiu’s account, Yu Xiaogang’s second uncle interrupted their wedding night by revealing that Liu Erlong was his illegitimate daughter—and therefore Yu Xiaogang’s cousin. Yu Xiaogang fled without saying goodbye 42.

Taking Tang San as a disciple

Li Qiu states that Yu Xiaogang spent more than ten years at an elementary academy waiting for a talented student through whom he could demonstrate his theories. After deducing that Tang San possessed twin martial souls, he became Tang San’s master 42.

Yu Xiaogang later boasted in letters to Flender that Tang San would be his only disciple. He abandoned that position after learning about Li Qiu’s accomplishments 39.

Appearance

  • Youth: A thirteen-year-old boy with short-cropped hair. Li Qiu describes him as fairly good-looking when young 9 11 12.
  • Middle age: A flat-topped hairstyle, stiff expression, stubble, and a protruding belly. He arrives at Shrek looking travel-worn and weary 39.
  • Mannerisms: Frequently clasps his hands behind his back, raises his chin, or puffs out his chest while asserting his authority 39 48 49.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is highly confident in his theoretical knowledge. He calls his understanding of martial souls peerless and assumes that convincing Li Qiu to become his disciple should be easier than recruiting Tang San. Public criticism nevertheless affects him severely: when Li Qiu turns his best-known maxim against him, he becomes furious, spits blood, and collapses 39 41.

Reputation is central to his ambitions. He declares that he values his name too much to break a public promise. Li Qiu attributes his preference for exceptional disciples to a desire to gain recognition through their achievements; his attempt to recruit Li Qiu contradicts his earlier claim that Tang San would be his only student 39 44 48.

Abilities & Skills

Luo Sanpao

  • A malignant mutation described as a pig-and-dog-like “Swine” martial soul 3.
  • Possesses two Control Path Soul Skills, described as fart-based control and poison-mist control 3.
  • Retains a trace of the Golden Sacred Dragon’s bloodline, which Yu Xiaogang himself acknowledges 41.
  • Li Qiu argues that unsuitable soul rings squandered its potential; Yu Xiaogang maintains that possessing a trace of the bloodline does not make Luo Sanpao a Golden Sacred Dragon 41.

Trinity Martial Soul Fusion Skill

  • Created by Yu Xiaogang for the Golden Iron Triangle 42.
  • Summons the Golden Sacred Dragon, with Yu Xiaogang taking the leading role 41.
  • Allows him to lead a fusion involving Flender and Liu Erlong despite being only a Soul Grandmaster while both companions are Soul Saints 42.

Martial Soul Theory

  • His best-known maxim is: “There are no useless martial souls, only useless soul masters” 41.
  • Studies martial souls, Soul Beasts, and twin martial soul cultivation 10 39.
  • Advises Tang San not to add rings to his Clear Sky Hammer yet, anticipating the advantage of possessing eighteen soul rings at level ninety 39.
  • Teaches an optimal second-ring age of a little over seven hundred years, beyond which an ordinary cultivator risks bodily failure 17.
  • Zhao Wuji credits his training methods and says his ring-age guidelines have proved accurate in ordinary cases. Li Qiu’s two-thousand-year second ring exposes their limits as universal rules 41 42.

Teaching and Training

  • Commands Tang San’s strong loyalty; Tang San treats his guidance as authoritative and takes pride in being his disciple 17 39 41.
  • Supports rigorous physical and combat training, ordering students to run to the Soto Great Soul Arena for “hellish training” 49.
  • Tries to secure Li Qiu’s discipleship through a wager on Tang San’s combat performance 48.

Relationships

  • Yu Yuanzhen — Father. Seats the thirteen-year-old Yu Xiaogang beside him at the Upper Three Sects’ competition, which Bibi Dong takes as evidence that he treats his son well 11 12.
  • Flender — Sworn brother and fellow Golden Iron Triangle member. Repeatedly invites him to teach at Shrek, defends him against Zhao Wuji, and guarantees his wager with Li Qiu 39 48.
  • Liu Erlong — Cousin, Golden Iron Triangle companion, and intended bride. Their wedding is abandoned after her parentage is revealed 42.
  • Bibi Dong — Former lover in the history described by Li Qiu. The adult Bibi Dong continues cherishing him as her first love, even while reading accusations about his motives 10 43.
  • Young Bibi Dong — In a separate timeline, learns about him through the chat group before their romance can develop. She rejects that future and kicks him into a river when he approaches her 10 12 35.
  • Tang San — Disciple whose twin martial souls underpin Yu Xiaogang’s confidence in his future success 39 48.
  • Tang Hao — Idol. Yu Xiaogang enthusiastically identifies him as Tang San’s father 39.
  • Li Qiu — Desired disciple and outspoken critic. Rejects his authority, challenges his theories, and accepts a wager that could force Yu Xiaogang to call him “Grandpa” 41 48.
  • Zhao Wuji — Shrek colleague. Recognizes some value in his methods but refuses to let him alienate Li Qiu 39 41 48.
  • Qian Renxue — Becomes hostile after hearing Li Qiu’s account of his conduct and sends the adult Bibi Dong a letter questioning his sincerity 42 43.
