Personality

Poseidon wants to escape the monotony of immortal life in the Divine Realm. Xiao Ran explains that passing on his divine position is necessary before he can leave. Poseidon’s fascination with the Sky Screen and the world beyond the heavens reinforces his desire to explore elsewhere 6 7 46.

He is possessive of his chosen successor but willing to bargain. After emphasizing that Tang San is his inheritor, he retreats when Asura confronts him over interference in the Angel God’s succession. He offers to share Tang San, securing Asura’s agreement to overlook the matter 21.

In combat, Poseidon is imperious and contemptuous of mortal resistance. His avatar’s destruction enrages him as a personal humiliation. When he descends in his true body, he presents his intervention as protecting the lower realm, despite the rules restricting divine interference 63 64 65.

History

Ascension and the Whale King Rivalry

Ten thousand years earlier, Poseidon and the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King competed for the Sea God position and the ocean’s faith. Poseidon attained godhood, but his attempt to kill the whale king failed: a trident thrust intended for its brain merely blinded one eye because its brain was unexpectedly small 56 62 66.

At that time, Poseidon had only just reached level 100 and had not undergone the Divine Realm’s spiritual-energy baptism. His later transformation into a powerful First-Level God widened the gap between them considerably 66.

Tang San’s Revealed Inheritance

The Sky Screen reveals that Tang San will inherit both the Sea God and Asura God positions. Watching from the Divine Realm, Poseidon recognizes Tang San as the successor his future self would choose, although even his divine power cannot decipher the screen’s nature 5 6.

In Xiao Ran’s account of the original future, Poseidon chooses Tang San to inherit his position through the Sea God Nine Trials. The inheritance also gives Tang San access to Sea God’s Light and Sea God’s Descent before he becomes a deity 7 10 20.

Xiao Ran further reveals that Poseidon broadcasts Qian Renxue’s Angel trials to Tang San and his companions and interferes with another deity’s succession. Qian Renxue vows to kill him. In the Divine Realm, Asura confronts Poseidon over the exposed misconduct, then agrees to disregard it after Poseidon concedes that they can share Tang San 21.

These revelations damage his followers’ confidence. Sea God Island’s guardians question both Poseidon’s conduct and Tang San’s suitability, particularly after learning that Tang San would later abandon the island. Bo Saixi nevertheless insists that Poseidon’s choice must be respected and forbids the guardians from deliberately obstructing Tang San’s trials 22 35.

Defense of Sea God Island

As Qian Daoliu overturns the revealed future, Poseidon angrily anticipates an attack on Sea God Island. He regards an assault on his divinely protected inheritance site as grounds to intervene 42.

During Spirit Hall’s invasion, Bo Saixi activates her Ninth Soul Skill, Sea God’s Descent, merging Poseidon’s divine consciousness with her Martial Soul. The resulting avatar summons the Sea God Trident, restores the defenders’ morale, and drives back Qian Daoliu despite his Angel Holy Sword 61 62.

The Deep Sea Demonic Whale King kills Xiao Bai and her clan, then joins Qian Daoliu against the avatar. Their combined attacks eventually shatter it. The destruction also breaks Bo Saixi’s Martial Soul, and the backlash kills her 62 63 64.

Descent in His True Body

An unidentified voice offers to conceal Poseidon’s intervention from Destruction, Life, Evil, and Good. Delighted by this opportunity, Poseidon descends personally before Qian Daoliu and the whale king can kill Tang Hao and Tang San 64 65.

His true body decisively reverses the battle. He immobilizes the whale king with Unfixed Wind and Waves, then nearly destroys Qian Daoliu’s body with One Trip, No Return. A subsequent trident thrust pierces the whale king’s divine armor 65.

Poseidon deliberately keeps the whale king alive, stating that Tang San still needs its Soul Ring and Soul Bone. His descent also triggers a major plot-deviation reward for Xiao Ran: the key to the Space-Time Gate, enabling Xiao Ran and Qian Renxue to return to Douluo Continent 66.
