Background / History

Tang San originally belonged to the Bashu Tang Sect as an outer disciple. Barred from studying the inner disciples' Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record, he stole it and learned the sect's secret arts. Qian Renxue's research on Blue Star identifies his previous-life cliff jump at twenty-nine and twenty years spent researching the Buddha's Fury Tang Lotus 33.

On Douluo Continent, he was born to Tang Hao and Ah Yin, a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast in human form. Tang Hao noticed his unusual composure from infancy and his secret cultivation on the mountain behind their home from the age of three. When the Sky Screen confirms his otherworldly origin, Tang Hao's longstanding suspicions are validated, while Ah Yin regards the revelation as the loss of her own child 18 35.

Before the opening events, Tang San studied under Yu Xiaogang, participated in the Soul Master Tournament, used the identity Tang Yin in Slaughter City, and studied at Moonlight Pavilion. He also established a new Tang Sect on Douluo Continent 6 14 36.

Appearance

Personality

Tang San strongly identifies with his announced destiny. Learning that he will become both the Sea God and Asura God fills him with excitement, and praise addressed to “God King Tang” visibly delights him. Bo Saixi's timely rescue and Xiao Ran's account of his survival against Angel God Qian Renxue reinforce his belief that fate makes him impossible to kill 5 16 20 26.

He is devoted to Xiao Wu and repeatedly resolves to resurrect her. He also expresses gratitude to Yu Xiaogang, embracing him after hearing about his future godhood and promising to vindicate his teacher against Xiao Ran's criticism 5 8.

His insistence that he is “pure as ice and jade” contrasts with the conduct exposed by the Sky Screen. Xiao Ran criticizes his practice of declaring the Soul Beasts he kills evil, while even his companions question that standard. The narration also directly exposes his calculation when he swears upon only his Blue Silver Emperor Martial Soul, deliberately preserving the Clear Sky Hammer as a fallback if he breaks his promise 18 22.

Tang San reacts to criticism with resentment and threats. He decides that Xiao Ran deserves death for insulting him, threatens vengeance against Qian Daoliu, and privately condemns Sea God Island's protectors for forcing him to swear an oath 10 20 22.

Heaven Dou Palace Coup and the Sky Screen

Tang San overturns Qian Renxue's Heaven Dou Palace Coup with Dugu Bo and Yang Wudi, driving her forces away and saving Emperor Xue Ye. Qian Renxue subsequently describes the defeat as the ruin of a plan she had spent twenty years building 7 9.

The Sky Screen then reveals that Tang San will become the decisive figure in Spirit Hall's destruction. His allies begin preparing his journey to Sea God Island, while Spirit Hall moves to eliminate him before that future becomes possible 5 6 8.

Flight to Sea God Island

Loss of Trust on Sea God Island

Xiao Ran reveals that, in the original future, Tang San protects Shrek Academy with Sea God Divine Power but allows Sea God Island to fall to the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King's wife. The island's Soul Masters and Demon Soul Great White Sharks react with disgust and demand assurance that he will protect them 21 22.

Tang San swears upon his Blue Silver Emperor Martial Soul, concealing his intention to retain the Clear Sky Hammer if the oath destroys his first Martial Soul. The promise reduces the immediate hostility without restoring full trust 22.

When his transmigration is exposed, the Seven Sacred Pillar guardians again question his suitability. Bo Saixi nevertheless orders them not to deliberately increase his trials' difficulty and continues backing his succession 35.

Original Future Exposed

Changes to His Announced Destiny

• Spirit Hall destroys the Clear Sky Sect before its members can await Tang San's return as a god 13.
• Dai Mubai and Zhu Zhuqing die at the hands of Spirit Hall's Sixth and Seventh Consecrated Elders, although Tang San later remains unaware of their deaths 33 35.
