Background / History

Tang Fei is the son of Tang Li, the Phoenix Empire’s God of War, and Chen Yan. After Tang Li’s family was condemned for rebellion, Tang Li and Chen Yan were executed; Tang Li’s brother took in their infant son. 1

He grew up in the ruins of Old Earth, where the Old Man raised him alongside Little Fatty. Survival in Hate Mountain made Tang Fei a capable hunter, scavenger, trap-maker, and fighter long before he openly acknowledged being a cultivator. 3 24 25

Tang Fei’s life changes when he rescues Phoenix after her escape pod crashes near Hate Mountain. Though he initially treats her care as a transaction for supplies, weapons, and New Star passage permits, their shared fights against the Flame Shrine and New Star assassins turn them into trusted allies. 3 4 8 12

After the Flame Shrine attacks his village, Tang Fei helps destroy its local forces and organizes the survivors to bury their dead, recover supplies, and distribute captured resources. The Old Man identifies his aptitude for command during this crisis. 39 40

He later expands from a wasteland survivor into the leader of the Righteous Army, recruiting officials, building a financial system, reorganizing the Fire Bath Army, and directing campaigns against Luocheng and Brocade City. 51 61 67 72 86

Appearance

Tang Fei is a clean-cut youth with refined features, clear bright eyes, and a mocking, bandit-like smile. His early wasteland appearance is far less polished: he is frequently unwashed, long-haired, and covered in dust from hunting and survival work. 6 13 28

  • Noted for features striking enough to rival boys on the Star Ranking. 28
  • Initially wears practical hunting clothes and deerskin boots. 11
  • Often carries a cleaver, later replacing or supplementing it with the Xiuxue Knife. 2 45
  • Wears a black cloak looted from the Fierce God’s tomb. 49

Personality

Tang Fei is shaped by the unforgiving rules of the ruins. He is suspicious of strangers, values practical repayment over empty gratitude, and openly considers himself unsuitable for the ideal of a “gentleman.” 4 24 He lies, bargains, provokes enemies, and uses traps without hesitation when survival is at stake. 8 26 28

Despite this ruthless pragmatism, his violence is consistently directed toward protecting those he considers his own. He risks himself for Little Fatty, Phoenix, the Old Man, and later the people under his command. 19 32 35 40 He is particularly intolerant of anyone humiliating or threatening Little Fatty. 32 33

Tang Fei is also vain, mischievous, and fond of praising his own looks, cooking, intelligence, and supposed charm. His shameless humor often appears even in dangerous situations. 6 22 34 70 As his influence grows, he becomes more composed and calculating, using both generosity and coercion to consolidate allies and military power. 71 74 85 87

Abilities & Skills

Qi Control Technique

Tang Fei channels Yin Yang Qi to manipulate objects at range, most often his cleaver.

  • Controls his cleaver through groups of enemies with precision. 2 37
  • Uses Qi Control to deflect or halt projectile attacks, including the Clown’s bullet barrage. 25 31
  • Can use Qi-controlled weapons in ambushes and coordinated traps. 28
  • His cultivation was deliberately concealed from Phoenix and hostile pursuers for use as a reserve advantage. 26

Dragon Elephant Subduing Demon Technique

Tang Fei practices the nine-level Dragon Elephant Subduing Demon Technique taught by the Old Man. 6

  • Produces dragon-and-elephant manifestations when he channels Yin Yang Qi into his fists. 29
  • Its bright, righteous nature suppresses Shan He’s Yin-based Thousand Corpse Transformation. 29
  • Tang Fei acknowledges that his mastery is incomplete; his manifestations are initially phantom-like compared with the Old Man’s tangible Dragon Elephant attack. 29 39

  • Hunts mutated animals and navigates dangerous terrain with speed and confidence. 2 8
  • Maintains hidden shelters and equipment caches along dangerous routes, including acid-rain refuges. 19
  • Uses local medicinal materials, including Snake Skin Tree sap and grass juice, to treat wounds and acid burns. 3 20

Trapmaking & Tactical Combat

Tang Fei compensates for stronger opponents through preparation, deception, and battlefield control.

  • Designed the Fourfold Kill: bamboo arrows, nets, psychological misdirection, and his qi-controlled cleaver. 28
  • Lured assassins into “Hell’s Gate,” a deadly mud pit in Hate Mountain. 28 29
  • Uses bait, feigned weakness, ambushes, and terrain familiarity to make enemies underestimate him. 11 26 28
  • Prefers proactive strikes over waiting to be surrounded. 26

Mechanical Aptitude

Tang Fei has a sustained interest in mechanics and design.

  • Repeatedly builds and tests wooden flying birds, improving their flight height through trial and error. 6
  • Attempts to repair Phoenix’s damaged escape pod. 34
  • Understands the practical value and ammunition limits of New Star pulse guns. 43 45

Leadership & Political Strategy

Tang Fei develops from a local protector into a military and political leader.

  • Organizes Hate Mountain villagers after the Flame Shrine battle, assigning burial, recovery, and distribution tasks. 40
  • Builds loyalty by rewarding merit and dividing recovered food and valuables among households. 40 41
  • Reorganizes military forces including the Fire Bath Army, Dushan Army, Heavenly Wolf Army, barbarian soldiers, and part of the North Sea Fleet. 67
  • Uses recruitment, threats, negotiated surrender, and manipulation to gain officials and specialists such as Sheng Jing, Guo Nu, and Mo Qingfeng. 72 74 87
  • Delegates specialized work to trusted personnel rather than attempting to control every operation himself. 83
