Background / History

Kakashi graduated early from the Ninja Academy and fought in the previous Shinobi World War. He met Shinji at Kannabi Bridge, where Kakashi was already a jōnin and Shinji was still a genin 29 30.

His father, Sakumo Hatake, was condemned after saving a comrade at the cost of completing a mission. Sakumo eventually committed suicide. Shinji attributes the campaign against him to political efforts to suppress his popularity as a potential Hokage, while Madara later presents his fate as evidence of Konoha’s contradictory treatment of comrades and missions 74 230.

Kakashi was Minato Namikaze’s student and Obito Uchiha’s teammate. Obito gave him a Sharingan and was believed to have died at Kannabi Bridge. The loss of Minato, Obito, and Rin continues to shape Kakashi’s regrets; he visits Rin’s grave even after becoming Hokage 28 30 57 286.

Appearance

  • Silver hair: Visible above his fox-shaped ANBU mask during his first appearance 4.
  • Concealed face: Wears a black face mask beneath his outer mask. Shinji makes seeing his uncovered face the stake of their sparring wager 29.
  • Scarred eye: A scar runs across the eye containing his original Three-Tomoe Sharingan; his forehead protector normally conceals it 156.
  • Major injuries: Loses his right arm to Amaterasu and his original Sharingan to Itachi 160.
  • Later unmasking: Removes his black mask at Konoha’s gate while confronting Hiruzen, explicitly connecting the act to abandoning prolonged concealment 229.

Personality

Kakashi initially maintains a controlled, dutiful exterior. He suppresses his anger when Shinji invokes his dead comrades and Konoha’s treatment of heroes, then carries out the Hokage’s summons. His report about Shinji’s encounter with Naruto is restrained and factual 4 5.

His listless manner conceals both tactical alertness and unresolved grief. He can surrender a pointless spar without embarrassment, but fights fiercely when Itachi threatens his Sharingan and teammates. Even after losing an arm, he continues resisting rather than surrendering the eye 29 30 159 160.

He repeatedly rejects the Hokage position despite Shinji’s encouragement. After accepting a temporary appointment, however, he becomes markedly more confrontational toward Hiruzen. Hearing the former Hokage justify Naruto’s treatment without the usual deference to his office deepens Kakashi’s anger and disgust 30 74 229 237.

Becoming Hokage does not make him an enthusiastic political reformer. As a figurehead, he retains considerable free time, reads Icha Icha Paradise, and visits graves; the narration notes that he has little personal investment in unifying the shinobi world 286.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

  • Combat perception: Tracks Itachi during their duel and later narrowly perceives Obito’s spear thrust before it reaches his chest 160 286.
  • Original eye’s burden: Its chakra strain limits how long he can sustain a fully powered Lightning Blade 160.
  • Uncontrolled space-time effect: Briefly distorts Itachi’s vision and a nearby tree, but cannot reliably control the affected range 160.
  • Not absolute protection against genjutsu: Falls under an illusion without noticing; Yehuo’s ocular power disrupts it 156.
  • Later compatibility: His replacement Sharingan and Hashirama cells balance one another, allowing him to display substantially greater combat strength 236.

Lightning Release

  • Lightning Blade / Chidori: A concentrated piercing attack. Continued chakra input and charging momentum increase its power; it tears through Itachi’s shoulder, narrowly missing his heart 159 160.
  • Chidori Current: Releases surrounding electrical currents that disperse Itachi’s Great Dragon Fire Technique 159.
  • Lightning Release: Shadow Clone Technique: Creates electrically charged clones. Their discharge fails to affect Shinji’s Body Flicker phantoms 29.
  • Lightning Tiger Massacre: Uses one-handed seals after losing his arm to create a wolf-shaped lightning attack; Itachi disperses it with Wind Release 160.
  • Limit against Truth-Seeking defenses: His lightning attack vanishes against Obito’s black shield without damaging it 286.

Earth Release and Substitution

  • Earth-Style Wall: Blocks Itachi’s Dragon Fire Technique 159.
  • Multiple Earth-Style Wall: Raises four dog-head-carved walls around himself during his spar with Shinji 29.
  • Layered fortification: Combines numerous earth walls with a wooden enclosure to withstand Hiruzen’s Adamantine Staff 236.
  • Underground ambush: Reaches through the soil to seize Hiruzen’s ankle 236.
  • Substitution Technique: Escapes Shinji’s opening Chidori attack by replacing himself with dead wood 29.

Wind and Water Release

  • Wind Cutter Technique: Slices apart incoming fireballs during the fight with Itachi 159.
  • Water Formation Wall: Participates in a coordinated defense against Itachi’s Fire Release alongside Yugao and Anko 159.

Wood Release and Enhanced Physique

  • Thorn Prison Technique: Produces sharp, metal-like thorns that immobilize Hiruzen’s reanimated body and prevent him from completing release seals 229 230.
  • Wood Locking Wall: Encloses himself before adding Earth Release defenses against Hiruzen 236.
  • Physical enhancement: Hashirama cells strengthen his body and increase his Body Flicker speed 236.

Leadership and Fieldcraft

  • Team coordination: Directs Anko, Yugao, and Yehuo through extended field operations and warns them against concealed attacks 136 158 159.
  • Risk assessment: Stops Nobihi from pursuing dangerous former Root operatives; Shinji explicitly credits the intervention with protecting his younger brother 76.
  • Logistical knowledge: Explains Kannabi Bridge’s importance as a supply route connecting the Lands of Earth and Grass 136.
  • Camp security: Checks traps while operating in the Land of Grass 153.
  • Diplomatic administration: Receives visiting delegations and helps arrange the spectacle preceding the Five Kage Summit 256 257 258.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Konoha forehead protector — Covers the scar and original transplanted Sharingan 156.
  • Kunai and ninja tool pouch — Used in close combat and during his encounter with Obito at Rin’s grave 158 159 286.

  • Communication tools — Reports delegation arrivals through a ninja tool and later seeks Tsunade’s voice-transmission kunai to summon Shinji during Obito’s attack 256 288.
  • Icha Icha Paradise — Reads it openly during his free time as figurehead Hokage 286.

Relationships

  • Sakumo Hatake — Father. Sakumo’s suicide becomes central to Shinji’s challenges to Kakashi’s political outlook; Hiruzen later suspects that Kakashi’s hostility is motivated by resentment over it 30 74 230.
  • Minato Namikaze — Teacher. Kakashi advises Shinji to avoid regrets over failing to protect others, later reunites with Minato, and is rescued by his Flying Thunder God during Obito’s attack 30 237 287.
  • Obito Uchiha — Former teammate and close friend who gave him his Sharingan. Kakashi investigates hints of his survival, refuses to surrender the eye to someone acting on his behalf, and eventually faces him at Rin’s grave 57 74 159 286.
  • Rin — Deceased former teammate. Kakashi visits her grave and wonders how she would react to Obito’s actions; Obito blames him for failing to protect her 286.
  • Shinji Uchiha — Former wartime comrade, sparring opponent, and eventual political partner. Shinji challenges his passivity, promotes him as Hokage, and becomes the ally Kakashi urgently seeks during Konoha’s crisis 4 30 247 288.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Initially his Hokage and superior. Their relationship deteriorates into restraint, combat, and arguments over institutional responsibility and the treatment of heroes’ families 5 229 236 237.
  • Uchiha Itachi — ANBU-associated acquaintance and later opponent. Itachi takes Kakashi’s original Sharingan after a brutal duel, but Kakashi subsequently prevents Yehuo from killing him 158 160 164.
  • Uzuki Yugao and Mitaraishi Anko — Long-term field teammates who develop a strong rapport with him. Both later accompany him as members of his Hokage guard 158 258.
  • Uchiha Yehuo / Nobihi — Younger teammate whom Kakashi protects from reckless pursuit. Kakashi later worries that his increasing strength and arrogance are undermining their teamwork 76 136 174.
  • Torifu Akimichi — Wartime commander whom Kakashi is assigned to assist as deputy against Iwagakure 100.
  • Orochimaru — Provides his replacement Sharingan. Kakashi later acknowledges the irony of benefiting from abilities associated with experimentation after once pursuing Orochimaru for it 200 230.

Story Role / Major Arcs

ANBU Service and Shinji’s Return

Kakashi and two ANBU intercept Shinji on Uchiha territory and escort him to Hiruzen. Shinji tries to provoke a fight by invoking Kakashi’s losses, but Kakashi controls his anger. He subsequently reports on Shinji’s apparently accidental meeting with Naruto and is relieved of Naruto’s protection duty for a day 4 5.

Sparring and the Obito Question

After recognizing Shinji’s use of Lightning Blade, Kakashi accepts a spar at the Uchiha compound. Shinji first unsettles him with evidence suggesting that the masked Nine-Tails attacker may be an Uchiha believed dead, then overwhelms him with seventeen Chidori-bearing Body Flicker phantoms. Kakashi surrenders and honors their face-revealing wager 28 29 30.

Their private conversation turns to Sakumo’s death and Kakashi’s suitability as Hokage. Kakashi rejects the position and concentrates on Shinji’s revelation that the Mizukage is controlled by Sharingan genjutsu. He later asks more pointed questions about the masked man’s single visible eye and openly considers whether the man could be Obito 30 74.

Akatsuki Investigation and the Western Front

Hiruzen assigns Kakashi to accompany and protect Shinji on an investigation into Akatsuki in the Land of Rain. Anko and Yugao join the mission, and Kakashi later leads a field team that also includes Yehuo. During the war, Shinji appoints him Torifu’s deputy against Iwagakure 43 70 100 136.

Itachi’s Attack and Loss of the Sharingan

Itachi ambushes Kakashi’s team to obtain his left eye. Kakashi, Anko, and Yugao coordinate their defenses, but Itachi uses clones and genjutsu to incapacitate both women. Kakashi wounds Itachi with Lightning Blade, loses his right arm to Amaterasu, and continues resisting until Itachi removes the Sharingan 158 159 160.

Kakashi later stops Yehuo from killing the gravely injured Itachi and helps transport him. A masked group intercepts the escort, overwhelming it with chakra-draining Wood Release. By Chapter 200, Kakashi is at Orochimaru’s base and has received a replacement Sharingan 164 174 200.

Fifth Hokage and Confrontation with Hiruzen

Shinji asks Kakashi to serve briefly as Hokage so that a meeting determining the shinobi world’s future can be convened in Konoha’s name. Kakashi initially questions the choice, then removes his mask and uses Wood Release to prevent Hiruzen from undoing his resurrection 229.

Their confrontation becomes a battle at Konoha’s gate. Hiruzen permits Kakashi to strike him in an attempt to let him vent, but Kakashi rejects his explanations about stability and leadership. Minato’s arrival shifts the argument toward Naruto’s mistreatment, further eroding Kakashi’s deference to Hiruzen 236 237.

Konoha’s clan heads subsequently approve Shinji’s nomination unanimously, formally installing Kakashi as Fifth Hokage. He receives the foreign delegations and arranges for them to witness Shinji’s battle with Madara and Hashirama—a display of force he recognizes as deliberate intimidation 247 256 257 258.

Obito’s Attack on Konoha

While visiting Rin’s grave, Kakashi encounters Obito in a transformed state wielding the Ten-Tails’ power. Obito attacks him, alternately expressing grief, blame, and confusion. Kakashi studies these lapses and tries to activate a special kunai, but is repeatedly overwhelmed 286.

Minato rescues him with Flying Thunder God. When Konoha’s defenses fail, Kakashi seeks Tsunade’s communication kunai to contact Shinji. Obito detects the tool’s chakra and attacks, but Shinji arrives in time to protect the defenders 287 288.
