Appearance
- An elderly man with an aged face and a permanently hunched back 5.
- Usually receives visitors from a reclining chair, attributing his condition to an old injury 5.
- Initially presents a kindly expression that conceals his actual thoughts 5.
- During his death, his body withers into a husk, his bones break, and he collapses onto his recliner 11.
Personality
Mu En initially treats Ji Feng with warmth and amusement. He enjoys the boy’s confidence and irreverent jokes, a contrast to the worshipful behavior he normally receives from children. His composure nevertheless breaks when Ji Feng’s extraordinary awakening produces zero innate Soul Power: he angrily insists that the boy cannot cultivate or meet Shrek’s admission requirements 5 7.
His overriding loyalty is to Shrek Academy. He considers Ji Feng a possible successor while the boy appears capable of attaining godhood, but later decides to sacrifice his autonomy and future to strengthen Bei Bei. Mu En justifies the planned mutilation as necessary for Shrek’s survival, citing the Sun Moon Empire, Di Tian, his own approaching death, and Xuan Zi’s inability to shoulder greater responsibility 6 9.
When Ji Feng reverses the ritual, Mu En becomes frightened and helpless. He hopes the child’s body or consciousness will collapse, celebrates when that appears imminent, and ultimately develops fear of Ji Feng’s resolve 10 11.
Abilities & Skills
Radiant Sacred Dragon
Mu En possesses a light-attribute dragon martial soul whose aura resonates with Ji Feng’s dormant draconic power 5 6.
- Recognizes Ji Feng’s divine attribute as purer and stronger than his own light attribute 6.
- Has extensive experience confronting Long Xiaoyao’s darkness, allowing him to distinguish ordinary darkness from demonic slaughter 6.
- His martial soul manifests in response to Ji Feng’s dragon phantom, but retreats immediately after the Defiant Evil Dragon roars 7.
Limit Douluo Soul Power
His level-ninety-nine Soul Power is exceptionally condensed, described as nearly solid when it enters Ji Feng’s body 7 10.
- Wraps himself in Soul Power while observing Ji Feng’s awakening 7.
- Guides others into cultivation and draws out their martial souls by channeling power into their bodies 9.
- Physically suppresses Ji Feng even after losing control of the ongoing absorption 10.
- Possesses two Soul Cores; both shatter after his death, and their fragments enter Ji Feng’s spatial martial soul 11.
Bloodline-Transfer Ritual
Mu En uses a secret method to attempt to evolve Bei Bei’s Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon into Ji Feng’s Reverse-Bone Evil Dragon 9.
- Releases black demonic energy and tendrils that pierce Ji Feng’s body 9.
- Draws Ji Feng’s blood into a floor array converging beneath Bei Bei 9.
- Requires both Mu En and Bei Bei to relinquish conscious control of their Soul Power so it will accept Ji Feng’s blood 9.
- Expects Ji Feng to survive only in a vegetative state 9.
- This loss of control enables Ji Feng’s Northern Darkness Divine Skill to absorb their intermingled power. Once the suction begins, Mu En cannot stop it; resistance only feeds more power into it 9 10.
Martial Soul Knowledge
- Identifies the lost divine and demonic-slaughter attributes and explains their associations with godhood 6.
- Uses the Dragon Core’s draconic energy to stimulate Ji Feng’s dormant martial soul 5.
- Cannot explain the coexistence of Ji Feng’s opposing attributes 6 7.
- Fails to detect the surviving consciousness within the Dragon Core 5.
- Acknowledges that some of Shrek’s unacceptable martial-soul experiments produced Evil Soul Masters as by-products 9.
Equipment / Items
- Dragon Core — The condensed life force and power of a Radiant Sacred Dragon, nurtured by Mu En for many years. He originally intended it to help Bei Bei eventually break through to Limit Douluo, but uses it to awaken Ji Feng’s martial soul. It disappears during the awakening and later protects Ji Feng while sealing most of Mu En’s stolen Soul Power 5 7 10 11.
- Soul Power testing crystal — Used to establish that Ji Feng has zero innate Soul Power despite his exceptional martial soul 7.
Relationships
- Yan Shaozhe — Eldest disciple and an ardent admirer. Yan brings Ji Feng to Mu En for help and later asks him not to harm the child. Mu En decides to conceal his plan from Yan because of Yan’s attachment to Ji Feng 1 2 5 7 8.
- Mu Bei Bei — Great-great-grandson and intended recipient of the Dragon Core. Mu En attempts to transfer Ji Feng’s dragon bloodline to him and pressures him to cooperate despite his hesitation 7 9.
- Ji Feng — Initially a promising guest whom Mu En privately regards as a disciple and potential asset to Shrek. Their relationship becomes openly hostile when Mu En attempts the bloodline transfer; Ji Feng retaliates by draining him to death 5 6 7 9 10 11.
- Zhang Lexuan — Bound by a marriage contract arranged by Mu En, according to Ji Feng’s assessment. She later watches over Ji Feng under Mu En’s instructions and brings him to the ritual meeting 5 8 9.
- Long Xiaoyao — An opponent Mu En has fought for years, making him familiar with darkness-attribute power 6.
- Xuan Zi — Shrek elder whom Mu En considers unable to shoulder the responsibilities that will follow his death 9.
History & Major Arcs
Early Career
Mu En awakened his martial soul at six, reached level twenty at eight, and became a level-sixty-nine Quasi-Soul Emperor by eighteen. At that age, he led his team to a Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Tournament victory. Yan Shaozhe recounts these achievements as evidence of his teacher’s exceptional talent 2.
By Ji Feng’s arrival, Mu En is over two hundred years old, serves as Sea God Pavilion Master, and suffers lasting effects from an earlier injury. Despite reaching Limit Douluo, he has never sensed the Divine Realm’s call; witnessing Ji Feng’s divine attribute leads him to suspect that his own light attribute lacks sufficient purity 5 6.
Ji Feng’s Awakening
Mu En receives Ji Feng after the boy shatters eight Heavenly Soul Stones. Suspecting a connection to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon bloodline, he uses the Dragon Core to complete the awakening 5.
The resulting Defiant Evil Dragon combines divine power and demonic slaughter, overturning Mu En’s understanding of martial souls. He considers Ji Feng ideal for Shrek’s ultimate individual soldier plan against the Sun Moon Empire, only to discover that the boy has zero innate Soul Power 6 7.
Mu En then seeks to recover the missing Dragon Core and keeps Ji Feng under observation. He tells Yan Shaozhe that he will extract the core if it is inside the child 8.
Failed Transfer and Death
Claiming to have solved Ji Feng’s cultivation problem, Mu En summons him and Bei Bei for guided cultivation. The session is instead a bloodline-transfer ritual intended to give Bei Bei Ji Feng’s supreme dragon martial soul 9.
Ji Feng exploits the ritual’s uncontrolled Soul Power with the Northern Darkness Divine Skill. Mu En cannot halt the drain and waits for Ji Feng to die from the overwhelming energy, but the Dragon Core and the boy’s martial soul keep him alive. After roughly two hours of bodily transformation, Ji Feng continues the absorption with the hidden girl’s assistance, draining Mu En until he dies 10 11.
Posthumous Influence
Most of Mu En’s Soul Power remains sealed within the Dragon Core, while a smaller portion fills Ji Feng’s opened conception and governing vessels. Ji Feng can convert this reserve into his own power rather than accumulate energy through ordinary cultivation 11 12.
After obtaining his first Soul Ring, Ji Feng uses the stored power to advance from level ten to level twenty within two breaths. Mu En’s death also makes Ji Feng regard Shrek as his principal enemy and plan an escape to the Sun Moon Empire 13 14.
Notable Quotes

“My allotted time is almost up, and Xuan Zi cannot shoulder great responsibilities. We must nurture a powerhouse. Someone must make a sacrifice.” 9
