Night gradually drew its curtain, and the zombies that had hidden in dark corners during the day began emerging one by one.
"Raaagh..."
"Keh keh keh..."
The firefight outside White City's Camp No. 28 was reaching fever pitch.
At this awkward hour, Liu Feng and his men, who had no sturdy walls to protect them, were practically leaving their backs exposed to the zombies coming out to feed.
With a rocket launcher on his shoulder, Han Bing crouched low and made his way over to Liu Feng under cover of the vehicles.
"Feng, that bastard Yu Guangqi has hunkered down on defense. It's almost dark now. If this keeps up, things could turn against us!"
Liu Feng glanced back at the setting sun, his heart burning with anxiety. Being so far from their home base only made their predicament worse.
They had failed to break through the enemy ahead, while zombies threatened to attack from behind. If the battle dragged on, they could easily end up surrounded on both sides. Even if they managed to fight their way out, they would suffer heavy losses.
"Goddammit, Yu Guangqi might be a little guy, but he's got plenty of tricks." Liu Feng cursed, then turned his gaze back toward the platform of the community camp. "Han Bing, take two agile men who can swim. I'll draw their fire while you sneak across the river and lower the wooden bridge. Remember, move fast. We've got no way back."
Seeing Liu Feng's serious expression, Han Bing nodded and whispered, "Feng, I won't let you down!"
With that, Han Bing went back, found two strong young men, and quietly slipped down to the river on one side.
Once Han Bing was in position, Liu Feng nodded in satisfaction.
"Exploding Insects, you're up!"
Liu Feng swept his hand through the air, and nearly 100,000 Iron-toothed Insects gathered overhead into a vast silver net. Behind it hid nearly 100 Exploding Insects glowing a pale yellow.
"Go!"
The moment Liu Feng gave the order, the massive insect army launched its attack. The swarm swept forward, blotting out the sky as though the apocalypse were descending. In the blink of an eye, the Iron-toothed Insects reached the community camp's platform.
"Ah! Those damn things again!"
"What are you scared of? Just spray them with bullets! I don't believe they're bulletproof."
"Fucking die! I hate bugs!"
As furious shouts rang out from the platform, the thunderous rattle of gunfire grew chaotic.
At the sight, the corners of Liu Feng's mouth lifted into a faint, sinister smile. Once the moment was right, he casually snapped his fingers.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The Exploding Insects hidden among the Iron-toothed Insects detonated across the community camp's platform like a string of firecrackers. The people taking cover there had never expected anything like this. Completely unprepared, they were blown into bloody pulp.
Standing on the opposite bank, Liu Feng watched the clouds of vivid blood mist erupt over the platform with extraordinary calm. His face remained utterly blank, as though none of that brutality had happened.
"Wasn't that a little too... much, what Feng did?"
"If you don't know what to say, shut up! You show the enemy mercy, but will they show you any?"
"That's right. Those are the rules of this world. The strong live, and the weak die!"
"I support what Feng did!"
"So do I!"
Hearing his men's hushed discussion, Liu Feng finally felt the weight lift from his heart. He abruptly turned toward those who had spoken and told them expressionlessly, "You men, guard the rear of the convoy. Whatever happens, don't let the zombies break through your line."
"Got it, Feng!"
After giving orders to address his last concern, Liu Feng turned back.
Under Liu Feng's covering attack, Han Bing and his two men had successfully crossed the river. Keeping low, they crept along the wall toward the mechanism by the gate that raised and lowered the wooden bridge.
Han Bing was skilled enough to drive his knife effortlessly through the guard's throat. Before dying, the poor fellow still tried to sound a warning to the community camp, but foul-smelling, hot blood bubbled from his mouth, leaving him unable to make a sound.
"Clack, clack, clack..."
With the grinding of gears, the wooden bridge on one side of the river slowly lowered.
When Yu Guangqi saw this from the community camp's platform, he nearly exploded with rage.
"Fuck! Which bastard was guarding the bridge? How could he let it down?"
Just then, a familiar voice suddenly reached Yu Guangqi's ears.
"Shorty Yu, you're finished!"
Yu Guangqi looked toward the voice. Below the community camp's platform, Han Bing was grinning up at him.
"Han Bing, so it was you, you fucking bastard! I'll fill you full of holes!"
Rat-tat-tat!
As a burst of piercing gunfire rang out, Yu Guangqi felt a rush of warmth across his chest. He jerked his head down and saw that rifle bullets had torn through it. The shooter was none other than the burly tattooed man who had stayed close beside him.
"You... why did you..."
Before Yu Guangqi could finish, he suddenly lost his balance and crashed to the ground.
Watching from the wooden bridge, Liu Feng curled his lips into a smug smile.
With both the Iron-toothed Insects and Exploding Insects already in battle, how could the Parasitic Insects possibly be left out?
At a snap of Liu Feng's fingers, the burly tattooed man instantly dissolved into a pool of blood.
By then, the Parasitic Insects had also taken over the bodies of everyone else on the community camp's platform. As the insects steadily drained the nutrients from their bodies, they soon dissolved into foul-smelling pools of blood, just like the tattooed man.
Once all the pickup trucks had crossed the wooden bridge safely, Han Bing raised it again. The zombies drawn by the noise could only roar endlessly from across the river.
Liu Feng recalled his insect army and walked into White City's Camp No. 28 without expression.
Looking around, he saw that although the community camp was small, the supplies stockpiled there amounted to several times those of other community camps. Clearly, Yu Guangqi had possessed some ability.
"Well, well. He managed this place so well that he must have had professional management training. If I'd known, I would've spared him. What a waste."
Just then, Han Bing interrupted. "Feng, what did you say?"
"Nothing." Liu Feng smiled, then suddenly asked, "Where are the other people in the community camp?"
"We've gathered them in the first-floor lobby."
