Background / History
Origin and Birth
Diancie’s birth medium was a red crystal excavated from a cave near Xi’an seven or eight years before Xiao Ran bought it for five million. Removing it provoked the local Carbink colony to chase the excavators away. Xiao Ran initially suggested it might have fallen from the Carbink queen, then developed the theory that the mutation producing Diancie could occur in a diamond before a Carbink was born 98.
The crystal responded to Xiao Ran’s lunar power and later received Fairy-type energy from Xerneas. Xerneas explained that Diancie needed time to develop and instructed Xiao Ran to activate the sealed crystal in a suitable location. The activation took place in a restricted laboratory prepared by Qiao Hongyuan 98 105 110.
When the Sacred Crystal cracked, Xiao Ran’s touch caused it to shatter. Diancie awakened, recognized the comforting lunar power and Xerneas aura within him, and immediately called him “Daddy.” She absorbed the crystal fragments for nourishment, despite researchers’ hopes of preserving them. Qiao defended her right to consume the gems, while Xiao Ran tried to persuade her to call him “Big Brother” 138.
Early Development
Diancie cooperated calmly with examinations whenever Xiao Ran was present. Concerned that her sheltered upbringing might prevent independence, he encouraged her to play with Kirlia and Weavile and learn from their resilience. The research confirmed that she was already physically developed and had been Entry Class from birth, despite her emotional innocence 139.
Her growth accelerated after she absorbed Xerneas’s Branch. The resulting increase in energy outpaced her body’s development, creating an urgent need for high-grade minerals. Float Stone and Mystic Heavy Stone deposits eventually supplied the materials she needed, while Xiao Ran helped keep her two elemental energies balanced 268 269 275 277.
Restoration of the Diamond Domain
Diancie accompanied Xiao Ran into the ruined Diamond Domain, where its Carbink and other rightful inhabitants had vanished. Sensing lingering sorrow, she led him to the depleted Sacred Diamond and asked for his help restoring it. She Mega Evolved and used Diamond Storm while he supplied lunar power, rapidly exhausting him 533.
After Xiao Ran’s three-day unconsciousness, the mine had become a diamond-covered kingdom centered on a restored Sacred Diamond. Diancie had reached Elite Four Class, and roughly sixteen Carbink formed the beginnings of a renewed colony. She regarded the Carbink almost as her children and had helped drive away nearby threats 535 536.
Diancie explained that she had not originated from this Diamond Domain and would not become its ruler. A new Diancie developing inside the Sacred Diamond would inherit that role. Although reluctant to leave the Carbink, she continued with Xiao Ran because he needed her against the Doomsday Cult; Morelull and Cutiefly remained to guard the colony 536.
Appearance
Diancie has a noble, princess-like appearance, ruby-like eyes, and a body that feels like a collection of diamonds rather than a soft organic creature. Even small stones shed from her body are genuine diamonds 138.
- Forehead gem: Emits red light when she breaks down and absorbs surrounding gems 138.
- Normal movement: Primarily moves by bouncing and using psychic power; excessive mineral-induced weight makes movement more taxing 274.
- Mega gown: Pink diamonds extend across her body to form a glittering princess gown 280.
- Mega head and ribbons: Her head diamond becomes heart-shaped, and two ribbons descend from her crown 355.
- Mega lower body: A massive diamond replaces her lower body, surrounded by elongated diamonds and curved rings around the neck, waist, and skirt-like region 355.
- Mega mobility: Floats and flies freely instead of relying on hopping 280 454.
Personality
Diancie begins as gentle, obedient, elegant, and deeply trusting. Her immediate attachment to Xiao Ran is stronger than her confidence around strangers: although she insists she is not afraid of the researchers outside her incubation room, she grips his neck tightly. Xiao Ran compares her sheltered disposition to an innocent princess and deliberately seeks more steadfast companions as role models for her 138 139.
Her affection develops into a willingness to shoulder danger. She accepts Xerneas’s Branch because she wants to protect her family and later promises to defend everyone after becoming Xiao Ran’s strongest Pokémon. Her grief over the Diamond Domain turns into determination to restore it, and her concern for its Carbink remains strong even when she must leave 268 277 533 536.
She remains courteous in competition. After defeating Morl’s Alakazam, she gives him a respectful nod before reverting from Mega Evolution, despite being exhausted 455.
Abilities & Skills
Legendary Energy Control
Diancie’s advantage is not limited to numerical stats: her understanding of energy, control over it, and the quality of her energy exceed those of Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon such as Dragonite 138.
- Begins life with precise energy control and substantial room for rapid growth 139.
- Masters Rock-type moves readily because her body is made of rock 139.
- At Elite Four Class, refines lower-grade energy to produce a qualitative increase in Super Moonblast, despite not having reached Legendary rank 666.
Rock Manipulation and Terrain Control
Diancie can reshape existing stone, summon rocks, and compact loose material into stable ground 145 232 601.
- Construction: Creates hollow partitions from wall bricks and rubble, and raises a platform above a flooded battlefield 145 232.
- Excavation: Splits a mineral-bearing hill, uses Earth Power to uncover buried stonework, and peels away rock to open the Rock Peak Ruins 274 420 601.
- Ground stabilization: Counters destructive ground movement during an enemy Earthquake 355.
- Entrapment: Uses Rock Tomb to bury Dragonite, restrict Altaria’s movement, and encase Yungoos and Gumshoos in dense, body-shaped stone prisons 223 281 440.
- Area control: Combines Sand Tomb, Sandstorm, and rock barriers to obstruct movement, visibility, and attacks 452 454 455.
- Additional attacks: Uses Ancient Power, Smack Down, Power Gem, Rock Slide, and Stone Edge 147 223 232 281.
Diamond Storm and Diamond Creation
Diamond Storm is Diancie’s signature move. It transforms stone into pink diamonds and demands exceptionally precise energy control 281.
- Initially lacks sufficient energy to sustain the move even at Late Stage Gym Leader Class; her first Mega Evolution lets her perform it with difficulty 281.
- Later uses enormous diamond formations for both offense and defense, including blocking Xurkitree’s Discharge 355 487.
- Helps restore the Sacred Diamond in the ruined Diamond Domain 533.
- Breaks the Doomsday Cult’s control ring on Volcanion with a precisely directed diamond strike 562.
Defensive Support
Diancie has naturally high physical and special defenses; both base defensive stats are stated as 150 405.
- Harden and Iron Defense: Stack physical protection, allowing her to withstand repeated close-range attacks 170 234 440.
- Reflect and Light Screen: Reduce incoming physical and special damage 223 234 352.
- Guard Split: Shares her defensive advantage with allies such as Murkrow and Salamence; she can also withdraw the effect 170 352 405.
- Baton Pass: Transfers accumulated defensive boosts to Milotic while switching out ahead of an incoming Surf 234.
- Safeguard: Blocks sleep and other status effects without the drawbacks of pairing Misty Terrain with a Dragon-type ally 223 404.
Fairy-Type Attacks and Recovery
Diancie learns Charm and Draining Kiss while playing with Kirlia before she is a week old 139.
- Draining Kiss: Restores health or stamina by draining actual vitality. Against Dragonite, it leaves a temporarily aged patch of skin 223 281 413.
- Moonblast: Used to follow up on the buried Dragonite 281.
- Dazzling Gleam: Produces a decisive blast against Lucario and, in Mega form, overwhelms a large force of Ghost-type Pokémon with Fairy light 414 580.
- Twinkle Tackle: Uses a Fairy-type Z-Move during the Totem Gumshoos trial 440 441.
- Super Moonblast: Refines contributed energy into a stronger collective attack 666.
Communication and Psychic Techniques
Diancie can communicate through both Telepathy and ordinary speech from birth 138 158.
- Uses Ally Switch to counter an opposing Espeon’s repositioning and redirect Salamence’s attack into Magmar 405.
- Uses Calm Mind and Psychic; after Mega Evolution, her Psychic can directly match Mega Alakazam’s 355 452 454.
- Coordinates mentally with Xiao Ran through his awakened lunar power 413.
Meteor Beam
Meteor Beam gathers cosmic energy over an extended preparation period, strengthening Diancie while charging a devastating Rock-type beam 487.
- Can make limited movements while charging, provided they do not disrupt energy accumulation 487.
- Endures repeated Thunderbolt attacks from Xurkitree before completing the shot 487.
- Its potential output depends on how much accumulated cosmic energy her body can withstand 487.
Stealth Rock
Diancie places rock hazards that punish enemy movement, particularly when paired with obscuring sand 405 455.
- Uses hidden Stealth Rock to wound Mega Alakazam whenever it teleports into an unsafe position 455.
- After reaching Elite Four Class, creates contact-triggered explosive hazards comparable to small hand grenades 562.
Mineral Absorption
Diancie can directly absorb the energy essence of minerals rather than eating and digesting them piece by piece 275.
- Breaks Sacred Crystal fragments into powder and absorbs them immediately after birth 138.
- Requires high-grade rock to strengthen her body after major energy gains 269.
- Absorbs Float Stone and Mystic Heavy Stone in a one-to-ten ratio during her mineral-supported growth 275.
- Direct absorption loses some energy because her control is not perfect 275.
- Mystic Heavy Stone improves physical strength but also increases weight, making Float Stone valuable to her mobility 274 275.
Mega Evolution
Mega Evolution transforms Diancie from a defensive specialist into a much more mobile attacker. Her Attack and Special Attack rise from 100 to 160, while her total base stats are stated to reach 700 111 454.
- Improves flight, psychic mobility, offensive output, and energy control 280 281 454 487.
- Initially depends on her Mega Stone, Xiao Ran’s Key Stone, their bond, and his continual energy supply 280 453.
- Early use exhausts both partners; after the Dragonite battle, Diancie briefly loses consciousness when the transformation ends 282.
- At Elite Four Class, can Mega Evolve independently without consuming Xiao Ran’s stamina 580.
- Independence does not remove her own exhaustion: committing the transformation may prevent her from fighting later 580.
Weaknesses and Limits
- Steel vulnerability: Lucario’s Meteor Mash exploits her fourfold weakness and inflicts severe damage 413.
- Barrier counterplay: Brick Break destroys Reflect, removing part of her defensive setup 413.
- Normal-form speed: Rapid opponents can keep her on the defensive; even Mega form struggles to catch a skilled Teleport user directly 452 455.
- Charging time: Stronger attacks can be interrupted or leave her absorbing damage during preparation 281 440 487.
- Uneven move training: During the Lucario battle, limited training in Psychic and other coverage moves narrows her effective attacking options 413.
- Heavy body: Waterlogged terrain risks stranding her, and fighting beside water is comparatively unfavorable 232 580.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Diancie Mega Stone — Xiao Ran obtains the matching set before she is strong enough to use it, then gives her the stone before the dangerous return journey. It is later shown worn at her neck or chest 175 277 280 453.
- Poké Ball — Used by Xiao Ran to summon and recall her, including after exhausting battles 282 352.
- Xerneas’s Branch — Absorbed as a major growth resource rather than retained as equipment 268 269.
- Fairy-type Z-Crystal — Equipped by Xiao Ran in his Z-Move setup to enable Twinkle Tackle during her Island Challenge battle 440.
Relationships

- Xerneas — Supplies the Fairy-type energy needed for her development. Their shared energy source also makes Xerneas’s Branch particularly suitable for her growth 105 268 269.
- Qiao Hongyuan — Oversees her incubation and early research, defends Xiao Ran’s ownership, and rejects researchers’ attempts to stop her consuming her own gems 110 138 139.
- Kirlia / Gardevoir — Early playmate and role model for independence. Helps her learn Fairy moves and later guards her while she absorbs the branch’s energy 139 268.
- Weavile — A resilient companion Xiao Ran encourages her to learn from, contrasting with her sheltered temperament 139.
- Murkrow — Battle partner whose low defenses are strengthened by her Guard Split; shields her from Hattrem while attacking the opponents 170.
- Milotic — Receives her defensive boosts through Baton Pass and immediately converts that support into a victory over Floatzel 234.
- Veranica’s Salamence — Receives defensive support and benefits from her field control and Ally Switch counterplay in their shared battle 352 404 405.
- Diamond Domain Carbink — Revived colony she views almost as her children. She restores their home but leaves rulership to the Diancie forming in the Sacred Diamond 535 536.
- Hoopa and Volcanion — Combat allies; she works with Hoopa to break Volcanion’s control ring and free it from the Doomsday Cult 562.
