| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Power of the Moon awakened at birth | 3 | His lunar power is innate, although he initially lacks the training to use it reliably. |
| Childhood Dazzling Gleam eruption | 3 | At eleven, desperation over Ye Ling’s abduction triggers an overwhelming burst that throws off his captor and illuminates the night sky. The expenditure leaves him unable to rescue her. |
| Entry Class Trainer | 72 | Qiu Yuxuan qualifies him after assessing his command of Primarina. Winning the assessment battle is not required. |

| Improved lunar power after Mega Evolution | 455 | Pushing his power to its limit and recovering strengthens it; unlike his first attempt, he remains conscious afterward. |
| Partial release of immortal power | 534 | Cracks in the internal seal release energy that heals him and supports Diancie’s Sacred Diamond construction. Further leakage threatens to overwhelm his body. |
| Dantian cultivation attempted | 548 | Releases the sealed power in enormous quantities and attempts to store it in his dantian. His first attempt damages his meridians, but immortal power and Xerneas’s life force repair them. |
| Approximately Mid Gym Leader Class direct energy output | 550 | Immortal power circulating from his dantian strengthens his body and mind. He has formed no golden core and still lacks refined control. |
| Personal combat techniques developed | 551 | Spends roughly six weeks training on the Nebel Plateau, adapting Pokémon moves into techniques and discovering that psychic abilities are especially natural for him. |
| Elite Four Class Trainer | 680 | His non-Legendary Pokémon reach Elite Four Class over the following two years, making him a formally qualified Elite Four Class Trainer. |
Background / History
Xiao Ran is reborn into the Pokémon world with an adult’s soul and memories of Pokémon games and anime. His mother, Qiao Yan, gives him the family warmth missing from his previous life. His father is an Alliance Investigator; Qiao Yan works as a Breeder and university lecturer. Their neighbors are the family of Ye Fan, his father’s teammate and close friend 2 4 192.
After Ye Ling’s mother dies in childbirth, Ye Fan frequently leaves his daughter with Xiao Ran’s family. Both fathers’ demanding work eventually makes her stay long-term. Xiao Ran initially cares for her almost as a daughter, while Jiang Cheng becomes his best friend and shares his desk for eleven years 2.
The Hall’s attack on their elementary-school summer camp ends this peaceful childhood. Xiao Ran initially freezes at the violence, then desperately tries to save Ye Ling when she is taken. His Dazzling Gleam lets him escape, but exhausts him before he can reach her. Two months later, an Investigator team rescues Ye Ling from a Hall base; Ye Fan dies in the operation. The event leaves Xiao Ran with lasting guilt and traumatic memories 2 3.
Appearance
Xiao Ran begins the story with unusually beautiful, feminine-looking features, but immortal-power cultivation later changes him into a distinctly masculine, handsome young man 38 550.
- Early appearance: His looks earn him countless love letters and the title of Second High’s “school beauty” 38.
- Frequent mistaken identity: Nangong Yu and Sister Hua both initially mistake him for a girl 58 115.
- Xerneas-enhanced appearance: After encountering Xerneas, his skin has no visible pores or blackheads, his features become more refined, and he gains an ethereal air 108.
- Cultivation transformation: After integrating immortal power, his appearance changes from feminine beauty to striking masculine handsomeness 550.
- Public image: Before that transformation, his beauty is internationally famous alongside Milotic and Diancie 478.
Personality
Xiao Ran combines an adult outlook with playful vanity and sharp humor. He readily trades insults with Jiang Cheng, resents being reduced to his appearance, and appreciates recognition of his actual battle skill. His modest treatment of senior competitors contrasts with the cutting taunts he uses against hostile or overconfident opponents 2 48 49 194 293 294.
His protectiveness extends beyond Ye Ling and his friends to Pokémon on either side of a battle. He refuses to catch a Pokémon merely as a disposable solution to a team weakness, warns an opponent when further fighting could damage Shelgon’s future evolution, and comforts Gardevoir when it sacrifices its place in a match to heal him 72 221 296.
He is ambitious and impatient about growth. His enthusiasm for meditation leads him to ignore Qiu Yuxuan’s safety advice, and anxiety over Eternatus and Arceus’s disappearance persists even after he becomes immensely powerful. Nevertheless, he learns to consolidate progress rather than pursue rank alone 177 471 551.
In disputes, Xiao Ran usually favors practical gains over needless humiliation. He stops Zuo Chi from escalating a defeated opponent’s embarrassment and insists that cooperation with Andrey must rest on equal footing. Prejudice against China, however, provokes a firm response: he answers insults through battle and demands that opponents honor their wagers 136 311 330 384.
Abilities & Skills
Power of the Moon
- Fairy-type energy: His innate power supports Fairy-type training and can manifest as Pokémon-like attacks, most dramatically the childhood Dazzling Gleam eruption 3 250.
- Meditative recovery: Qiu Yuxuan’s method allows him to refine and replenish lunar power. Without active meditation, recovery can be slow: several days of rest restore only about twenty to thirty percent after severe depletion 176 315.
- Energy balancing: Helps Diancie balance Rock- and Fairy-type energies while absorbing rare materials 277.
- Pokémon affinity: His Fairy aura attracts Cutiefly; Fairy energy and Gardevoir’s Telepathy help him approach a wary Alolan Vulpix 325.
- Limits: Excessive expenditure can cause collapse. During Bruce’s challenge, his stamina and lunar power become dangerously depleted despite his outward composure 296.
Immortal Power and Personal Combat
- Self-repair: Released immortal power heals internal injuries and damaged meridians 534 548.
- Physical and mental enhancement: Dantian circulation strengthens his body, mind, and direct energy output 550.
- Shared growth: Overflowing power strengthens his own Pokémon and nearby Legendaries, including Xerneas, Hoopa, Volcanion, and Zygarde 548 550 551.
- Move-inspired techniques: Develops personal combat methods by drawing on Pokémon moves; psychic techniques prove especially intuitive 551.
- Limits: He initially cannot regenerate immortal power as he can lunar power. His cultivation is experimental, and he has no established method or teacher for it 534 548.
- Durability is not invulnerability: Survives an Aerodactyl’s barely Elite Four Class Hyper Beam, but Qiu Yuxuan warns that a stronger attack would likely have killed him 564.
Battle Strategy and Team Coordination
- Defeating type advantages: Uses timing and move combinations to win Persian against Graveler, Popplio against Elekid, and a school Machop against Spearow 34 48 177.
- Terrain control: Uses Misty Terrain against sleep and paralysis strategies, while recognizing that it does not prevent effects such as Encore 214 265.
- Setup and switching: Builds Diancie’s defenses with Harden, Reflect, and Iron Defense before passing the boosts to Milotic through Baton Pass 234.
- Ability exploitation: Uses Sylveon’s Pixilate-enhanced Swift against Shelgon and Skill Swap to obtain Manectric’s Lightning Rod 221 484.
- Multi-Pokémon coordination: Combines Ally Switch, Encore, healing, Protect, and Misty Explosion to dismantle Bruce’s Psychic team 265.
- Bond assessment: Identifies likely borrowed Pokémon through hesitation, poor rapport, and ineffective commands 294 295.
- Adaptability: Recognizes that real battles do not always follow his game knowledge and revises plans when unexpected moves appear 34.
Research, Breeding, and Teaching
- Evolution research: Information about Eevee’s evolutions helps Qiao Hongyuan develop his research into friendship evolution 109.
- Fairy-type pioneer: Publicly recognized as a leading figure in Fairy types and as the Trainer who discovered Sylveon’s evolution 250 295 315.
- Training design: Creates long-term plans covering sound moves, survivability, energy control, conditioning, and gradual move development 72 164 219 371.
- Pokémon Coordinator education: Teaches Coordinator Class Four and arranges substitute instruction before leaving for the Global College League 471.
- National significance: Xuan Yuan Haotian values his teachable Coordinator methods as a potential contribution to breeding and human–Pokémon relationships across China 557.
- Results: His first class of Coordinators is close to winning the Global College League by the epilogue 680.
Battle-Enhancement Technology
- Dynamax: Recognized as its discoverer and contributes guidance to early Dynamax Ore research 32 488.
- Early limitations: Describes an approximate fifty-to-one-hundred-percent temporary power increase, with unstable energy and a limited duration; initially reserves it for emergencies 264 277.
- Mega Evolution: Uses Mega Diancie as a lifesaving trump card capable of briefly wielding Elite Four Class power. Maintaining it is exhausting 365 455.
- Combined potential: Knows Dynamax does not prevent Mega Evolution and considers combining the two before facing Morr Washington 444.
- Z-Ring crafting: Inscribes energy-intensive magic circles to manufacture Z-Rings; completes more than a hundred for Alola’s exploration teams and Island Challenge preparations 430 470.
