League Strength Classes
The original Pokémon class names correspond to the Trainer ranks commonly used to describe combat strength later in the story 4.
| Pokémon Class | Corresponding Trainer Class |
|---|---|
| Normal Class | Novice 4 |
| Entry Class | Entry Class 4 |
| Elite Class | Elite Class 4 |
| Lord Class | Gym Leader Class 4 |
| King Class | Elite Four Class 4 |
| Epic Class | Champion Class 4 |
- Energy control is a class boundary: Entry Class Pokémon can summon water on dry ground or produce flames on a Water-type battlefield 36.
- Energy level is not combat strength: Evolution, energy quality, physical characteristics, and control can produce major differences between Pokémon with similar measured levels 111 513 535.
- Higher-class breakthroughs are difficult: Primarina, Milotic, and Gardevoir remain below Gym Leader Class for more than half a year despite continued training 470.
Aptitude and Potential
The League’s newborn aptitude test is generally used only at level 5 or below, before acquired factors obscure innate potential 9.
| Aptitude Grade | Documented Meaning |
|---|---|
| Deficient | An innate defect, compared to a congenital illness 9. |
| Weak | A relatively feeble individual within its species 9. |
| Ordinary | The species’ standard aptitude 9. |
| Excellent | A comparatively strong individual; activity and willingness to train can help a newborn rise beyond ordinary aptitude 9. |
| Elite | Normally the highest attainable grade for an ordinary newborn; exceptionally powerful parents are required 9. |
| Epic | Included in the League’s seven-grade system 9. |
| Legendary | Included in the League’s seven-grade system 9. |
Weak and ordinary individuals account for roughly ninety percent of a species. These aptitude grades are separate from strength classes 4 9.
Background / History
Arrival on Earth
Approximately a thousand years before the story, spatial rifts began releasing Pokémon onto Earth. Their powers overwhelmed societies armed with swords and spears, wiped out numerous species, and nearly drove humanity to extinction. However, some Pokémon were friendly toward humans, allowing animal tamers to become the earliest predecessors of Trainers 1.
Humans initially raised weak Pokémon and used them to defeat and capture stronger ones. Centuries later, Poké Balls made large-scale capture and organized resistance possible, allowing humanity to reclaim territory 1.
War and the Pokémon League
Human conflict eventually escalated into worldwide warfare. Nuclear weapons attracted Legendary Pokémon powerful enough to destroy the planet and immune to those weapons. The resulting threat forced an armistice, a ban on nuclear deployment, and the establishment of the Pokémon League 1.
Pokémon subsequently became central to human development rather than solely an external threat. Their elemental influence also changed human biology, extending average lifespans by about a third and enabling powers such as Psychic abilities and Aura to awaken 1.
The Original World
The Pokémon World’s destruction is established, but the exact mechanism behind Secret Realms remains uncertain. Proposed explanations include a shattered world and fragments trapped at nodes within a space-time passage. Void storms surrounding the realms are lethal even to powerful Legendary Pokémon 18.
Some surviving Major and Ultra-Major Legendaries remain weakened or asleep after a thousand years. Fullmoon Island and Newmoon Island have already separated from the Sinnoh Great Secret Realm and become part of Earth 494.
Biology and Ecology
- Reproduction: Pokémon hatch from Eggs, and offspring need not share a parent’s evolved form. Leafeon produces the Eggs that become Sylveon and Umbreon 5 190.
- Earth-born species: Some Pokémon have come into being on Earth rather than simply arriving from Secret Realms. Qin Shi Huang’s Mausoleum has produced a distinctive concentration of species around Xi’an 109.
- Appearance and typing differ: Plant-like Comfey and Flabébé are pure Fairy-types; tree-like Sudowoodo is Rock-type; Charizard and Gyarados are not Dragon-types 273.
- Regional variation: Alolan Vulpix is Ice-type with Fairy affinity. Xiao Ran arranges a Frost Ball because his young Vulpix struggles with the Solomon Islands’ heat 325 326.
- Territorial behavior: Mausoleum Ghost-types may peacefully occupy burial chambers, while corridor guardians are bound to sentry duties and cannot be tamed 142.
- Predation: Wild Pokémon can kill other creatures. A powerful Nidoking uses Hyper Beam to kill prey and leaves a deep crater 56.
- Migration: Newly appearing Secret Realms can displace huge populations; tens of thousands of Tauros obstruct a railway after reportedly escaping a temporary realm 181.
- Cooperative ecosystems: The Nebel Plateau valley contains Pokémon that cultivate crops, raise ordinary animals, and care for one another across species 538.
Habitats
| Habitat | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Base Cities | Protected human settlements where people and Pokémon coexist 43 54. |
| Safari Zones | Primeval forests surrounding cities, with region-specific Pokémon ecosystems 54. |
| Wilderness Areas | More dangerous territory beyond the Safari Zones, generally inaccessible to ordinary people 54. |
| Secret Realms | Existing miniature worlds containing Pokémon, resources, and remnants of the original civilization 18 408. |
| Ultra Space | Home to Ultra Beasts such as Xurkitree; its inhabitants and routes require specialized investigation 486 680. |
Abilities & Skills
Elemental Power
- Pokémon can breathe fire, summon water, fly, split mountains, and shatter stone. Researchers describe these capabilities as elemental powers; Chinese terminology includes Spirit Power 1.
- A Pokémon’s own typing does not restrict it to moves of that type. Starmie’s central gem supports unusually broad offensive coverage, including Psychic, Electric, Ice, Rock, and Fairy moves 163.
- Environmental conditions affect performance. Moonblast is stronger at night, especially under abundant moonlight, while cold weather can severely restrict Jumpluff’s movement 209 246.
Move Learning and Control
- Technical Machines do not exist: Pokémon learn through instruction from other Pokémon or independent study using training material 20.
- Foundational moves support advanced ones: Mastering Tackle makes Quick Attack easier to learn, with further derivative moves available afterward 164.
- Precision enables noncombat uses: Dugtrio triggers buried traps with controlled Earth Power; Primarina’s water attacks clear mechanisms without damaging the mausoleum 142.
- Real effects differ from game descriptions: Taunt induces irrational anger, while Mean Look can imprison targets in terrifying hallucinations 20 37.
Abilities
- Pokémon possess species- and individual-dependent Abilities, including Competitive, Hydration, Lightning Rod, Chlorophyll, and Snow Warning 127 179 209.
- Some require deliberate execution: Pikachu must ground electricity with its tail in time to exploit Lightning Rod 179.
- Some can be developed through training. Xiao Ran distinguishes Gothorita’s innate Competitive from trainable Frisk and Shadow Tag 341.
- Ability knowledge is incomplete among Trainers, making unfamiliar effects a major tactical advantage 179 341.
Intelligence and Communication
- Many Pokémon are at least as intelligent as humans, despite seldom being treated as equals 43.
- Some communicate through speech or Telepathy. Ralts becomes increasingly fluent after living with Xiao Ran, and Gardevoir translates conversations with wild Pokémon 129 538.
- Pokémon have their own songs and television dramas. Telepathic Pokémon assist production, while humans cannot necessarily understand the content 163.
- Enthusiasm can influence battlefield initiative: Bill’s encouragement motivates inexperienced Pokémon to perform better despite his poor commands 519.
Recovery and Support
- Life Dew restores a tired Togetic before battle, while Cresselia’s Lunar Dance heals Legendary allies and helps restore a confused, formerly controlled Victini 249 611 669.
- Happiny and Comfey study medicine, volunteer in medical classes, and treat Pokémon injured during practical examinations 517 518.
- Petilil’s bitter leaves can restore a person’s energy 61.
Evolution and Battle Transformations
| Method | Documented Conditions and Limits |
|---|---|
| Ordinary evolution | Changes the Pokémon’s body and life-form; comprehensive examinations are normally performed afterward 70. |
| Evolution Stones | A Water Stone evolves Staryu into Starmie; a Thunder Stone provides the route from Eevee to Jolteon 163 229. |
| Friendship evolution | An emerging research field connecting evolution to close human–Pokémon bonds; Qiao Hongyuan leads Chinese research into it 109. |
| Other evolutionary triggers | Documented categories include specific environments, items, moves, and beauty 175. |
| Delayed evolution | Building strength first can improve post-evolution strength and potential. Everstones can suppress evolution while a Pokémon develops 341 358. |
| Dragon Gate | A rare opportunity that produces exceptional growth in Milotic, Primarina, and Greninja; it is not an easy shortcut for every Pokémon 126 127 219. |
| Mega Evolution | Uses matching Mega Stone sets. Xiao Ran identifies strength and deep emotional bonds as important requirements; young Diancie and Absol are initially judged unable to survive it 175 176. |
| Dynamax | A temporary increase of approximately 50–100%, depending on adaptation to Dynamax energy. Strong control and a close Trainer bond help prevent energy instability 277. |
- Evolution may be species-restricted: Noibat must reach Gym Leader Class before evolving into Noivern 513.
- Growth can outpace the body: Diancie’s rapid Gym Leader breakthrough creates a nutritional crisis because her body needs additional rock to stabilize its energy 269.
- Boosting moves have costs: Calm Mind consumes mental energy, Dragon Dance maintains bodily tension, and Nasty Plot requires intense concentration 474.
- Dynamax duration is limited: A small ore supply can sustain an Elite Four Class Pokémon for one to three transformations, each lasting no more than ten minutes 277.
- Mega Evolution and Dynamax are not mutually exclusive: Xiao Ran considers combining them, though that combination is only a prospective strategy in the cited preparation 444.
Exceptional Pokémon
Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon
- Xiao Ran uses “Pseudo-Legendary” for exceptionally promising non-Legendary Pokémon, introducing the category through Gible 48.
- Reputation does not make a young member unbeatable; training, experience, and current development still matter 49.
- Many Dragon-type lines develop slowly and perform poorly before their final evolution, then gain enormous strength afterward 404 513.
Legendary Pokémon
- Legendary Pokémon differ in energy quality, not merely numerical statistics. Diancie’s and Kubfu’s pre-birth energy purity is comparable to Gym Leader Class energy 111.
- They still grow: Kubfu begins at Normal Class, whereas Diancie begins at Entry Class with unusually easy energy control 139.
- Xiao Ran’s classification distinguishes Lesser, Minor, and Major Legendaries. He compares ordinary Champion Class Pokémon to Lesser Legendaries, while emphasizing the importance of legendary authorities in particular matchups 641.
- Many have world-shaping duties. Xiao Ran describes Arceus as a creator and protector; Calyrex can heal and enrich the land, with strength linked to human faith 49 575.
- Their obligations can limit travel. The Legendary Birds and Regirock offer assistance when called but cannot permanently accompany Xiao Ran 550.
Totem Pokémon and Ultra Beasts
- Xiao Ran identifies an enormous Tauros as a Totem Pokémon, explicitly ruling out mutation and Dynamax 181.
- Totem Ribombee is summoned during a Poni Island trial through an assembled Rainbow Flower 523.
- Ultra Beasts come from Ultra Space and can be extremely difficult to tame. Apollo and Athena eventually tame a Champion Class Xurkitree to help regulate Ultra Wormhole travel 486 680.
Human–Pokémon Relationships
Partnership and Welfare
Xiao Ran regards Pokémon as friends and family rather than status symbols or disposable weapons. He argues that willing acceptance produces genuine coordination, while forced capture can leave Pokémon disobedient and unable to display their full strength 7 12 43.
This position conflicts with widespread treatment of Pokémon as pets or tools. Calls for peaceful coexistence grow among younger generations, but wilderness threats, historical suffering, and the ambitions of powerful people limit their influence 43.
- Loyalty: Charmander takes a dangerous attack to save Shen Yue 36.
- Welfare-led trading: Kubfu accepts a move to martial-arts specialist Jiang Zhuyue for better training; it and Ye Ling arrange monthly video calls 139.
- Abandonment: Volcanion’s sanctuary originally shelters Pokémon discarded by Trainers 538.
- Coercive control: Black metal rings force Legendary Pokémon into battle; destroying the rings can free them and turn them into allies 622 669.
- Reciprocity: Legendary Pokémon strengthened by Xiao Ran offer protection and assistance rather than accepting political recruitment 549 550.
Training and Care
- Conditioning: Stamina and physical development allow Pokémon to train longer and improve further 10.
- Recovery: Xiao Ran pairs structured swimming practice with food, massage, and injury prevention 11.
- Individual planning: Froakie needs a ranged attack, while Popplio develops water-balloon mobility and healing 11.
- Resource allocation: Concentrating investment on a starter and second Pokémon can leave later partners far behind 337.
- Move mastery: Owning a Legendary Pokémon does not compensate for poor command or failure to exploit its strengths 611.
- Responsible expectations: Xiao Ran rejects blaming Poliwag for failing to use Bubble Beam when it does not know the move 518.
Pokémon in Human Society
| Field | Role |
|---|---|
| Military and policing | Police use Growlithe; military breeding departments provide standardized Pokémon, with soldiers concentrating on teamwork 57. |
| Investigation and exploration | Investigators develop small elite teams for dangerous field assignments 49 57. |
| Breeding and research | Breeders specialize in raising Pokémon, while researchers study evolution, biology, and historical discoveries 109 460. |
| Coordinating | Xiao Ran emphasizes creative move applications, mental development, and energy control rather than treating coordination as performance alone 461. |
| Entertainment | Pokémon sing, dance, play instruments, act in television dramas, and perform in Contests 163 176 374. |
| Food production | Pokémon-derived ingredients include Appletun fruit, Tsareena syrup, Vespiquen honey, and Miltank cream 358. |
| Human consumption | Alliance-approved domesticated breeds are used as food; eating wild Pokémon carries disease risks 35. |
Access and Inequality
- Traditional starter Pokémon are League-regulated. Vouchers are available to qualifying contributors, including Gym Leader Class Trainers and Senior Breeders 4 12.
- Rare species impose steep costs: a Natu can cost at least a million, while common Wurmple and Caterpie are among the cheapest Pokémon to raise 12.
- Knowledge alone cannot overcome financial limits. A defeated Rock-type Trainer understands better team combinations but cannot afford them 219.
- Ordinary Pokémon generally peak at Elite Four Class; reaching Champion Class or beyond requires exceptional potential and efforts to overcome species limits 326.
