Background / History
Recruiting Yu Qian
Before Yu Qian arrived, Sun was the Dingyou Office’s newest member and handled its errands and miscellaneous chores. He selected Yu Qian from dozens of recruits because he considered him handsome, then brought him straight into a ghost-murder investigation. At the scene, Sun assigned him note-taking duties and helped Guo Yi examine the corpse 1 6.
Ji Cheng subsequently made Sun responsible for showing Yu Qian the ropes. Sun explained the Court’s organization, supplied the Sun Scroll, and warned that sensing qi could normally take three to five months. He also introduced the office’s personnel and its habit of arranging pleasure-house outings 2 3.
Early Investigations
Sun helped prepare for the Feather-Robed Ghost hunt by collecting sword oil with Yu Qian and signing out a Unicorn Steed and carriage. After Yu Qian destroyed the ghost, Sun refused to believe that he had only begun cultivating the previous day 5 6.
During the Azure Cloud Ward murder case, Sun publicly announced that Zhou, the victim’s concubine, would be drowned for adultery and conspiracy. On the return journey, he explained that the Court could enforce the law without the usual judicial process 7.
When assassins attacked Yu Qian’s home, Sun suggested temporarily moving into the Court and assured him that the institution would protect its officers. He later volunteered to accompany Yu Qian, Guo Yi, and Shi Da to the Ghost Market, arguing that the others’ lack of verbal finesse might cause unnecessary trouble 11 14.
Ghost Market and Rescue
Sun explained the Ghost Market’s rules and proposed seeking information at the Hundred Affairs Tower. When Yu Qian presented the evidence concisely, Sun praised him—then jokingly suggested giving him more office paperwork 15 16 17.
While staying near the market, Sun and Yu Qian visited the Clear Crisp House. They abandoned their entertainment when their identification tokens signaled a colleague’s distress and joined Guo Yi and Shi Da in a rescue attempt. The ensuing ambush left Sun with a bloody wound on his left arm 18 19 20.
After regrouping, Sun warned against asking questions about the senior divisions’ major case, lest the Dingyou Office become involved. Back at the Court, Wang Zhen sent him to the Healing Hall; all four participants received commendations worth 200 merit points each 20 21.
Green Garment Gang Confrontation
During Ji Cheng’s confrontation with Wang Kaitian, Sun framed the assassination attempt as a possible conspiracy against the Court and demanded proof that Kong Xing had acted alone. After the case closed, he accepted the explanation that Kong Xing’s foolishness and Yu Qian’s bad luck had caused the trouble 25 26.
Sun later lectured Yu Qian about reckless cultivation after seeing his injured hand. Learning that Yu Qian had already reached Eighth Grade left him bewildered at becoming the office’s weakest member again 28 29.
Personality
Sun is friendly, talkative, and informal with junior colleagues. He frequently pats Yu Qian’s shoulder, teases him about his concealed abilities, and offers practical safety advice. His concern includes repeatedly recommending safer accommodation after the assassination attempt 3 6 11 14.
Around Ji Cheng, he becomes conspicuously ingratiating: eagerly making tea, offering flattering toasts, and even interpreting the chief’s brothel visit as advance scouting for the team. Yu Qian initially labels him “all mouth and no skill,” but this is Yu Qian’s private impression rather than an objective assessment 2 3 6 13.
He enjoys pleasure houses and bawdy jokes, yet responds seriously to a colleague’s distress signal. His willingness to help coexists with a strong preference for avoiding dangerous investigations outside the office’s responsibilities 3 19 20.
