Background / History

Yaoshi travels the universe answering pleas from beings afflicted by calamity, plague, and sickness. Her original approach to altruism is unconditional: when Zhang Xiu’s people finally find her, she cures their plague and grants them longevity through fruit from a vast tree. Zhang Xiu receives the most beautiful fruit 1.

Zhang Xiu then asks her to marry him. Intrigued by an unprecedented request from a soul originating beyond her world, Yaoshi agrees, although neither initially acts from romantic love. Because her duties prevent her from remaining with him, she casts a leaf from her horns onto the ground, producing a lotus-born double with her appearance, memories, and personality. She makes their marriage conditional on both fulfilling their responsibilities; abandonment would end it 1.
