Background / History

Neptulon and the other Elemental Lords served the Old Gods and challenged the Titans in ancient times. After their defeat, the Titans imprisoned them in the Elemental World rather than killing them. Neptulon retained authority over vast numbers of water elementals there, living as an emperor despite his confinement 354 394.

Their imprisonment preserved Azeroth’s elemental balance. The Titans created the Elemental World as a small companion world dependent on Azeroth, allowing the four elemental embodiments to remain connected to it without operating freely within it 778.

Neptulon’s long confinement blurred his memories of Azeroth. His desire to return became rooted partly in idealized recollections, and Rex later identifies his impatience and contempt for Gilneas as central reasons for his defeat 788.

Appearance

  • Elemental body: Made of water rather than flesh and blood, with a blue coloration 395 814.
  • Giant form: Appears like a moving wall underwater. His seawater-expanded body exceeds 100 meters before the heroes’ attack reduces it to just over 30 meters 395 397.
  • Core form: Initially imprisoned as an elemental core capable of rotating, glowing blue, and speaking 404 789.
  • Humanoid form: Later resembles a person with pale-blue skin, a nose, and eyes—small enough to fit within the Underground Prison 789.

Personality

Neptulon treats mortals as beneath him and repeatedly invokes his status as a god. His ancient, largely unchallenged rulership makes insults particularly effective: Rex provokes him into revealing himself and initiating combat. He also assumes that the ocean will weaken his opponents, leaving him shocked when their specialized armor lets them fight effectively underwater 394 396 397.

His pride does not eliminate his instinct for self-preservation. He cooperates when Rex threatens to replace his consciousness and later offers information in exchange for an ancestor-sworn promise. After prolonged captivity, his behavior becomes markedly more restrained. He refuses opportunities to absorb energy, heal, or escape; Rex interprets this apparent obedience as evidence that he has learned caution and cunning through defeat 405 411 814.

Abilities & Skills

Ocean Control and Maelstrom

  • Commands surrounding seawater, producing massive waves and a rapidly expanding whirlpool with powerful suction 394.
  • His Maelstrom completely pulverizes a wooden boat, leaving no floating debris. Rex considers it a threat even to heavily armed shipping 395.
  • The whirlpool grows gradually, giving opponents a brief opportunity to escape through a Portal 395.
  • Rex and Medivh infer that such a powerful attack cannot be used repeatedly without restriction; its exact usage limit is not established 395.

Water Shaping

  • Transforms torrents of water into two enormous serpents to attack Rex’s party 396.
  • Gathers seawater into an enlarged combat body. Much of his initial bulk is assembled water rather than his underlying form 397.
  • The enlarged body is vulnerable to concentrated attacks: the heroes’ coordinated assault breaks it apart and sharply reduces his size 397.

Weather Manipulation

  • Intensifies existing winter conditions into catastrophic snowfall across the Lordaeron Subcontinent, attacking Gilneas on Kel’Thuzad’s instructions 343 405.
  • The disaster requires an artifact and suitable weather conditions. Even a demigod cannot force snowfall across such a vast territory through personal power alone 343.
  • Rex regards Neptulon as a continuing threat to agriculture, reasoning that summer floods could destroy crops as effectively as winter storms disrupt supplies 397.

Elemental Recovery

  • Absorbs elemental energy to sustain himself and repair his water-based body, though healing is not instantaneous 802 814.
  • Prolonged isolation from elemental forces can weaken him severely and eventually threaten his survival 802.
  • Can return to the Elemental World while sufficiently strong. During his defeat, he delays retreat until he no longer has enough power to escape 411.

Elemental Essence and Revival

  • Represents Azeroth’s elemental water. Removing his essence from the world would permanently reduce its water-elemental energy and weaken water-based practitioners 404 778.
  • Can revive after death, but Azeroth suffers an elemental shortage while he remains dead 778.
  • His consciousness is distinct from his essential role. Rex threatens to destroy that consciousness and cultivate a replacement while preserving the water-elemental essence 405.
  • His importance prevents outright exile to the Twisting Nether, but does not prevent imprisonment 778.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Enormous fork — Wielded against the heroes after they shatter his expanded seawater body 397.
  • Unnamed weather-amplifying artifact — Used with supernatural power to intensify Lordaeron’s winter snowfall; its name and other properties are not given 343 405.

Story Role / Major Arcs

The Gilnean Snow Disaster

Aegwynn confirms that Lordaeron’s catastrophic snowfall has been deliberately intensified with an artifact. The resulting shortages badly weaken Gilneas and force it to purchase costly supplies from neighboring kingdoms. Rex identifies Neptulon as the strongest suspect because the attack requires exceptional power and a water affinity, though he initially lacks proof and must establish whether Neptulon has left the Elemental World 343.

Neptulon’s return to Azeroth is subsequently established. Aegwynn and Jaina fear that his aggression signals renewed Old God activity, but Rex argues that he may be acting independently 343 354.

Underwater Battle and Capture

Rex’s expedition enters the winter sea to confront Neptulon. Fighting in his own domain, Neptulon unleashes a whirlpool that forces the group to withdraw through the Archmage’s Portal. Rex remains behind long enough to help secure the escape, suffering a slight injury 394.

The heroes return with a rapid Portal escape available. Neptulon answers Rex’s accusations with contempt, then attacks after further provocation. The party’s Goblin Shop armor overturns his assumption that they will be weakened underwater, enabling a coordinated assault that destroys much of his enlarged body 395 396 397.

Rex presses the advantage rather than allowing him to recover. During the pursuit, the party uses ambushes, Crystal Ball tracking, and teleportation to maintain pressure. Tirion and the spellcasters eventually intercept Neptulon from the front while Rex pursues from behind 398 401 402 403 404.

Neptulon’s refusal to concede proves decisive. He postpones returning to the Elemental World until the repeated attacks leave him too weak to do so, allowing the expedition to capture him alive 411.

Kel’Thuzad’s Scheme and Imprisonment

When Rex threatens his individual consciousness rather than his elemental essence, Neptulon agrees to answer questions. He reveals that Kel’Thuzad ordered the snowfall and that its purpose was to lure Rex out of Gilneas: Kel’Thuzad wanted Rex’s body 405 406 407.

His capture creates a dispute over custody because a living demigod has extraordinary research value. Antonidas and Jaina are especially interested because of their work with water elementals. Confined in the Underground Prison, Neptulon later identifies the lord of Darrowshire as a traitor after Rex swears an oath in his ancestors’ name 410 411.

Rex ultimately keeps him imprisoned rather than killing or exiling him. Killing would not permanently prevent his return, while removing his essence would damage Azeroth. Neptulon remains hostile to the mages’ experiments, although his resistance is eventually subdued 778.

The Undead Rescue Trap

Suspecting that the undead intend to rescue Neptulon, Rex investigates prison-access records discreetly rather than announcing his concerns. He later moves the captive to an isolated manor outside Lordaeron City as bait, using gronn-hide leather, elemental isolation, chains, and enforced unconsciousness to limit his recovery 778 802.

Limas breaches the sealed building with Frostbolts, intending to admit elemental forces and restore Neptulon’s strength. Neptulon awakens but deliberately refuses to absorb energy or escape. Jaina captures Limas, who reveals that the undead actually intend to use Neptulon to lure Rex into a lethal trap 803 804 805.

An underground assault destroys the building. Jaina protects Neptulon and keeps him nearby, but his continued passivity makes her increasingly suspicious. Even after sustaining injuries during her battle with Anub’arak, he makes no attempt to heal himself. Rex likewise regards this newfound restraint as ominous rather than reassuring 805 806 814.

Relationships

  • Rex — Enemy and captor. Rex defeats him, extracts information, preserves his elemental essence, and later uses him as bait against the undead 405 411 778 802.
  • Kel’Thuzad — Directs his attack on Gilneas to lure Rex out. Later identifies Neptulon as the bait in another attempt to kill Rex 405 407 816.
  • Jaina Proudmoore — Participates in his defeat and takes an interest in studying him. Protects him during the undead assault while remaining suspicious of his unusual compliance 396 411 805 806.
  • Antonidas — Helps coordinate the joint magical attack and strongly desires access to Neptulon for magical research 396 411.
  • Limas — Attempts to restore his strength by breaching his containment building; Neptulon ignores his demands to act 803 804.
  • Lord of Darrowshire — Connected to the conspiracy against Gilneas; Neptulon identifies him as a traitor during captivity 375 411.
  • Old Gods — Ancient masters of Neptulon and the other Elemental Lords. Their involvement in the snowfall is suspected by Aegwynn and Jaina, but not established 343 354.
  • Titans — Defeated and sealed the Elemental Lords while preserving their connection to Azeroth 354 778.

Notable Quotes

“Lowly creature, you dare scorn the great Water Elemental Lord? I will make you feel the ocean’s wrath!” 394

“Your body, Rex. From the moment I began attacking the Kingdom of Gilneas, I had only one goal: to lure you out.” 407

Trivia

  • Rex contrasts this terrifying enemy with the Neptulon he remembers from the game, where players defend him against the naga and Faceless Ones before Ozumat carries him away. That recollection is not Neptulon’s fate in the novel 395.
  • His presence makes his prison cell damp despite magical items intended to remove moisture 410.
  • An earlier oath constrained him through supernatural consequences; the provided account does not specify its exact terms 788.
