Xiao Yan was born into the Xiao Clan of Wutan City. During a period when he was regarded as “trash” and ridiculed by others, Xiao Xun'er and his maid Xiao Meng continued to support him; their loyalty remained a core source of his motivation. 360

He became bound to Yao Chen, whose soul resided in his ring and had been absorbing Xiao Yan's Dou Qi. Yao Chen offered instruction in cultivation and alchemy, and Xiao Yan accepted him as his teacher. 340 Before leaving Wutan City, Xiao Yan refined Blood-Coagulation Powder to secure his clan's marketplace and repay the Xiao Clan for raising him. 361

While traveling and training, he encountered Yun Yun under the identity “Yun Zhi,” fought numerous Magical Beasts, and learned techniques from Lord Ape. He later adopted the identity Yan Xiao to compete in the Gama Empire's Alchemist Tournament, where he refined a Three-Pattern Green Spirit Pill and established himself as a fourth-tier alchemist. 376 426
