Background / History

Leadership in Wutan City

Xiao Zhan initially leads the Xiao Clan as a Da Dou Shi. When Nalan Yanran seeks to end her engagement to Xiao Yan, he supports his son’s refusal to accept compensation and returns the Qi Gathering Powder through Ge Ye 339 427.

He remains attentive to Xiao Yan’s prospects after his son regains his talent. During the coming-of-age ceremony, he worries that Xiao Ning’s greater experience with Dou techniques could decide their match. Xiao Yan’s performance subsequently prompts Ya Fei to propose closer cooperation with the clan, which Xiao Zhan welcomes 349.

During the marketplace conflict, Xiao Zhan accepts the Jia Lie Clan’s submission rather than risk displeasing the elderly alchemist assisting his family—actually Xiao Yan in disguise. He is pleased that Xiao Yan will travel with the alchemist, but saddened by their approaching separation 361.

Amon’s Infiltration and the Clan’s Relocation

Xiao Zhan notices that increasing numbers of clan members and Wutan City residents wear monocles and display identical expressions. His fear intensifies when the altered clansmen gather outside his room and announce that their concealment has been discovered 426.

Wu Meng then approaches him under the identity of Ancestor Xiao Yuanshan. He explains the Xiao Tribe’s former standing among the Ancient Eight Clans and identifies Wutan City’s Xiao Clan as its descendants. Xiao Zhan accepts the supposed ancestor’s account without knowing that Xiao Yuanshan is another Amon avatar 427 428.

The clan moves into a nine-level underground refuge in the Magical Beast Mountain Range. Xiao Zhan handles its ordinary affairs and introduces the Amethyst Winged Lion King as its guardian. Wu Meng deliberately communicates through him to strengthen his authority and make Amon’s operations appear to be the Xiao Tribe’s own plans 442.

The Flame Emperor Cultivation Plan

After meeting Amon, Xiao Zhan participates in an alliance intended to cultivate a Dou Emperor who can help Amon return to the Great Thousand World. The Xiao Tribe’s bloodline and fragment of the Tuoshe Ancient God Jade make it a valuable partner 443 444.

Wu Meng nominates Xiao Yan as the clan’s future supreme expert. Xiao Zhan worries both about exposing his son to Amon’s influence and about appearing to favor his own family. Nevertheless, he agrees to conceal the clan’s circumstances from Xiao Yan and use hardship to accelerate his growth 445.

When the Jia Lie and Aoba clans attack the Wutan City estate, the victims are Amon substitutes rather than the relocated clansmen. Xiao Zhan remotely witnesses the slaughter through his own substitute; even knowing the truth, he feels anger at the casualties and fear at how narrowly his family escaped 456.

He later reveals the clan’s history and alliance to its members, demonstrating Spirit Worm fusion himself. After the clan relocates again into the independent Xiao Realm, he explains the plan to Xiao Ding, Xiao Li, and several younger relatives—but insists that Xiao Yan remain uninformed. Unlike the clan’s borrowed strength, Xiao Yan is expected to become a genuine expert capable of challenging Hun Tiandi and pursuing the Dou Emperor realm 549 559.

Dealings with the Soul Clan

An Amon impersonating Xiao Zhan enters the Soul Realm, meets Hun Tiandi, and acquires Hun Zhang as an adopted son. The real Xiao Zhan later takes control of this substitute to investigate the Soul Clan, only to discover relationships and negotiations he did not personally initiate 474 481 483 561.

Hun Zhang proposes a marriage between Xiao Yan and Hun Xiao. Xiao Zhan becomes less opposed when he considers that the union might preserve his son’s bloodline if the struggle for Dou Emperor ends badly. He remains cautious because of Xiao Yan’s earlier engagement to Nalan Yanran; the arrangement is ultimately abandoned 564 706.

Following Wu Meng’s apparent death as the Xiao ancestor, Xiao Zhan commits to cooperation with the Soul Clan. He also assumes leadership of Soul Hall, seeking to recover captured Amon souls, obtain Soul Origin for Xiao Yan, and secure Xiao Meng’s release through the transfer of Soul Hall’s assets 617 707.

High-Level Conflict and the Family Revelation

Xiao Zhan privately reveals his identity to Yao Chen and asks him to honor a pill-refinement agreement inherited from the supposed ancestor. He requires secrecy even from Xiao Yan, explaining that his son needs pressure and hardship to fulfill the tribe’s expectations 634.

He subsequently attacks the Medicine Clan and seizes its Tuoshe Ancient God Jade. During the battle, he shields Xiao Ding and Xiao Li from Yao Dan’s self-destruction and returns to Heaven Hall badly injured 659 664.

After fighting Lei Ying and later confronting Gu Yuan alongside Hun Tiandi, Xiao Zhan finally brings Xiao Yan to Heaven Hall and explains the clan’s survival, its alliances, and the opportunities arranged throughout his journey. Xiao Yan responds with gratitude mixed with suspicion and resentment over the suffering and losses incurred 697 704 705 710.

Their confrontation also addresses Xiao Meng’s death. Xiao Zhan says he had intended to recover her through Soul Hall’s handover, but Xiao Yan’s earlier rescue operation intervened. Although distressed by his son’s reaction, he refuses to let Xiao Yan’s resulting hatred fall upon the entire tribe 707.

Later Life

Xiao Zhan introduces Hun Mi as his new partner, and Xiao Yan accepts her as his stepmother. He also meets three granddaughters—Xiao Huo, Xiao Yan, and Xiao Yi—and learns about Xiao Xiao 716.

During the struggle over the Emperor Grade Embryonic Pill, he and Xiao Yu consider self-destruction to stop Hun Tiandi. Xiao Yan intervenes, and Amon later criticizes Xiao Zhan’s strategy 720.

In his latest supplied appearance, Xiao Zhan plays a board game with Yao Chen and asks White Amon about Xiao Yan. His concern is no longer his son’s strength, but the emotional burden Xiao Yan has not overcome 904.

Appearance

Xiao Zhan is a middle-aged man with an imposing, heroic bearing 540.

  • Concealing attire: Uses a black hooded robe and Dou Qi to obscure his face when meeting Yao Chen secretly 634.
  • Amon substitute: His impersonator wears or adjusts a monocle; this is an identifying trait of the substitute, not an established feature of Xiao Zhan’s ordinary appearance 429.

Personality

Xiao Zhan is an affectionate father who takes pride in his sons and places their safety above his own. His protection of Xiao Ding and Xiao Li during Yao Dan’s self-destruction leaves him badly injured; afterward, he reminds them that he promised their mother he would care for them 664.

As clan leader, he combines practical judgment with concern for unity. He accepts a rival clan’s submission rather than prolonging a dangerous dispute, proposes selective use of Spirit Worms, and worries that nominating Xiao Yan could look like nepotism 361 445.

His protectiveness also develops into paternal manipulation. He conceals the clan’s survival to motivate Xiao Yan, accepts a plan built around his son’s suffering, and prioritizes the tribe’s relationship with its future Dou Emperor even during a painful family confrontation. He feels guilt and grief, but does not abandon the plan 559 634 705 707.

He can maintain outward composure under severe pressure. His trembling hand betrays his fear during his first meeting with the supposed ancestor; later, Wu Meng’s coaching helps him assert his leadership before Hun Tiandi 427 565.

Abilities & Skills

Spirit Worm Fusion

  • Gains access to higher-realm power by merging with Amon’s Spirit Worms, including Dou Huang flight and Dou Zong aerial suspension 549.
  • His effective strength depends on Amon’s available power rather than solely on his own cultivation 559 664.
  • After the Medicine Clan battle, Amon cannot immediately restore his Nine-Star Dou Sheng power while the main body is still refining the Ninth-Grade Golden Pill 664.

Remote Control of an Amon Substitute

  • A deeply fused Spirit Worm connects Xiao Zhan to an Amon impersonating him through the Flame of Fate 446.
  • This connection allows him to speak and act through the substitute while his real body remains elsewhere 446 561.
  • He does not automatically know everything the substitute has done, leaving him unprepared for Hun Zhang’s adoption and marriage negotiations 561.

Spatial Techniques

  • Space Strangulation: Kills the pursuers threatening Xiao Ding and Xiao Li, including the Lion Tooth Sect’s hall master 558.
  • Spatial Passage: Creates a route back to the clan’s refuge 558.
  • Spatial tearing: Uses Amon-granted power to access the independently created Xiao Realm 559.

High-Level Dou Techniques

  • Star Extinguishing Fist: Counters Lei Ying’s Thunder Tribulation Palm 697.
  • Has sufficient comprehension to learn the advanced cultivation methods and Dou techniques supplied by Amon 697.
  • Remains less proficient than experienced opponents of the same realm; Amon compensates by accelerating his time during combat 697.

Clan Administration

  • Suggests prioritizing Spirit Worm use for members with limited cultivation potential and those undertaking missions 445.
  • Opens Amon-created cultivation methods and Dou techniques to all tribe members without restrictions, though many lack the comprehension needed to learn them 641.
  • Avoids publicly discussing instability within the Amon Clan because it could threaten confidence in the tribe’s most important alliance 716.

Relationships

  • Xiao Meng — Regards her almost as a daughter; her reported death provokes grief, anger, and regret 638 707.

  • Gu Yuan — Distrusted potential partner. Xiao Zhan questions the Ancient Clan’s reliability and later confronts him alongside Hun Tiandi 705 710.
