Ch. 381White Walker attack
Key plot points and events
- Jon finds Sam in hiding at Castle Black and learns that Maester Aemon is safe in the Rookery, while Davos, Mance Rayder, and the defenders are fighting near the Commander Tower.
- Jon escorts Sam to Maester Aemon, who is stunned that the White Walkers have breached the Wall. He explains that ancient magic has protected it for thousands of years, but Jon postpones investigating the breach to confront the immediate danger.
- Jon gathers the five hundred Night’s Watch brothers and equips them with dragonglass weapons, uncertain whether they can harm the White Walkers.
- At the Commander Tower, Jon sees wildlings and Watch brothers holding a desperate defensive line against a vast horde of wights. Mance Rayder is mortally struck by a White Walker’s ice spear and falls.
- Jon leads a charge. Dragonglass proves effective: Jon kills the first White Walker, and the others join the assault. Jon and the brothers destroy all the White Walkers.
- With the White Walkers dead, the wights stop moving and disintegrate. The Wall’s protective magic appears to take effect again, leaving the living amid the ruins.
