Background / History
Childhood and family pressure
An Shi grew up with his abilities treated as assets to the An Family. His mother trained him to display exceptional knowledge to attract his father’s attention, while his relatives expected him to enter business. Under that pressure, he became increasingly quiet. One childhood memory shows his older sister asking whether he liked the sea, then pushing him into a swimming pool after he answered yes 41.
Lin Xingye saved An Shi and Bo Xi during childhood, although Su Chenle initially received the credit. An Shi eventually became unable to tolerate Su Chenle’s behavior, and he and Bo Xi later discovered who had really rescued them 29 70 71.
After Lin Xingye was injured and lost his memory, An Shi felt profoundly helpless. He chose medicine and focused his research on the brain, partly to help Lin recover his memories. Attempts to approach Lin were repeatedly discouraged 103.
Medical career and independence
An Shi had no interest in running the family company. After learning that An Ning wanted that role, he chose not to compete with her and instead pursued his own studies. An Ning became the family’s CEO, although rumors portrayed her succession as merely the consequence of her brother’s refusal 5 103.
He worked at City A People’s Hospital for several years before moving to a private hospital partnered with his family. Its smaller surgical workload gave him more time for research; he did not ordinarily handle emergency-department patients or routine surgical calls 23.
His distance from the family extended to holidays: he either spent New Year alone or celebrated with Bo Xi. Despite resenting his mother’s control, he initially resisted involving his friends in family disputes, acknowledging that she had raised him and contributed to the family 98 103.
Appearance
An Shi is described as coolly handsome, with an aloof appearance compared to an icy, proud immortal. He strongly resembles An Ning 5.
- Face: Distant-looking eyes and brows, a high nose bridge, and thin lips usually pressed together 5.
- Hair: Smooth, straight hair with bangs 29 37.
- Build: Lean and lightly muscular, maintained through regular modest exercise rather than an enthusiasm for working out 117.
Personality
An Shi’s public manner is cold, reserved, and often blunt. He rarely bothers to respond to people he finds uninteresting, but his quietness does not prevent him from being socially considerate. His overseas colleagues appreciate his politeness and ability to keep conversation and jokes within comfortable boundaries 5 116.
With close friends, his reserve gives way to dry humor and sharp-tongued affection. He jokingly offers to “collect” Qi Sijing’s corpse, threatens to stop speaking to Lin Xingye if he risks his life again, and hides concern behind irritation 29 86.
His devotion to Lin is not simply romantic: Lin is indispensable to him, and he suppresses his own feelings rather than expose Lin to pressure from the An Family. He repeatedly puts Lin’s safety before his own, even when doing so endangers the hands essential to his profession 85 99.
An Shi can also be calculating. He deliberately guides Hu Kai’s mother toward suspecting Qin Ke while appearing reluctant to gossip. His eventual aim is to draw Qin Ke’s attention away from Lin and onto himself 27 29 32.
His restraint toward relatives comes from gratitude and a desire to preserve relationships, not acceptance of their behavior. Over time, he asserts firmer boundaries and learns that he does not have to endure emotional pain alone 102 103 106.
