Background / History
Aristocratic upbringing
Sui Yun was raised as an heir of a great aristocratic clan. He grew up with the Second, Third, and Fifth Princes, who know him well enough to recognize the calculating disposition beneath his composed exterior 47 195.
His father closely resembles him in both appearance and temperament. His parents’ marriage has remained affectionate for more than twenty years, and both father and son are attentive to the Marchioness 136 141.
Meeting Yunjian
Sui Yun first appears with the three princes and Xia Shuang when Wenren Luoshui and Yunjian encounter them after court. Yunjian immediately develops a crush on him. He shows little sympathy for Xia Shuang’s tearful accusations against Luoshui, reprimanding her behavior 46.
He subsequently overhears Yunjian’s enthusiastic thoughts about pursuing him and responds with a faint, playful smile. When Xia Shuang tries to secure lodging with the men, he rejects her with “I barely know you,” prompting the princes to distance themselves as well 47.
Yunjian later enters his courtyard using a wall-passing talisman, carrying two enormous watermelons. Sui Yun detects her arrival while practicing martial arts and teases her. After she accidentally reveals her feelings and flees, he laughs openly at the encounter 48. At their next meeting, he thanks her for the sweet watermelons rather than refusing her offer to bring more; watching her leave fills him with warmth 52.
Investigations and imperial tours
| Event | Sui Yun’s involvement |
|---|---|
| Missing-child investigation | An Embroidered Guard summons him to investigate a missing girl. He accepts Luoshui’s offer of divination, which identifies the burial site of a child murdered by Zhao Junsheng 47. |
| Hongshan County corruption case | Accompanies the emperor, Luoshui, and Yunjian on an incognito tour. After witnessing Magistrate Jiang’s unjust ruling against Wang Xiaohong, he identifies himself as the Embroidered Guards commander and takes responsibility for the investigation and evidence 80 85. |
| Duan Yifan’s discovery | Recognizes a familiar-looking man at an inn; Luoshui’s thoughts confirm that he is the missing eldest son of the Duke of Anguo. Sui Yun had spent years searching because the Duchess is his mother’s childhood friend 111 112. |
| Report to the Duke of Anguo | Gives a factual account of Duan Yifan’s conduct, including his six sons’ attempt to burn down the inn while the emperor was staying there. He reports without adding personal judgments 113. |
| Zhao Aidi’s provocation | Reacts with killing intent when he learns that Zhao Aidi wants to marry Yunjian to a sixty-year-old man, but restrains himself when his companions intervene 160. |
Courtship and family acceptance
As their relationship develops, Sui Yun becomes increasingly gentle around Yunjian. He carries her heavy basket of vegetables, catches her before she walks into a pillar, and carefully readjusts the lotus leaf shading her head 66. He later arranges two retired Embroidered Guards to train Tu Hua after Yunjian asks for his help 133.
On his day off, he brings Yunjian to meet his parents and helps her down from her carriage. During dinner, he serves her food while she quickly wins his mother’s affection. When Yunjian returns with twenty cartloads of gifts and calls the Marchioness “our mother,” his aloof expression gives way to a smile 136.
His mother’s acceptance survives Luo Chuyan’s attempts to create distrust. Sui Yun ignores Luo when she tries to approach him and goes directly to visit his mother. He and his father have also retaliated against Luo’s repeated interference by arranging additional concubines for her husband 141.
The 1960s world
During the other-world adventure, Sui Yun occupies the body of a military-family young master who shares his name. Luoshui and Yunjian explicitly recognize him as the Sui Yun they know, rather than the body’s original owner 188 195.
The system reveals the original owner’s history with Xu Miaomiao:
| Period | Original owner’s history |
|---|---|
| School and countryside years | Becomes devoted to Xu, gives up enlistment to follow her to the countryside, and spends much of his family’s money and ration coupons on her 185 186. |
| University and business | Tutors Xu into university, buys a braised-meat recipe for her, and repeatedly rescues her business ventures 186. |
| Corporate success | After his family expels him, becomes a senior executive in Xu’s company. His management helps it become a nationwide chain and one of the country’s top five hundred companies, while Xu takes public credit 186. |
| Death in Xu’s previous life | Returns from medical treatment abroad to find the company ruined and acquired by a foreign firm. When he refuses Xu’s demand to recover it, she turns to argue while driving and crashes, killing him 186. |
The present Sui Yun refuses to repeat that relationship. He denies Xu’s claims that he promised lifelong protection, identifies them as former classmates, and demands repayment using a notebook recording three years of borrowing 187. He privately rejects responsibility for the original owner’s choices, although an invisible force had prevented him from avoiding the countryside assignment 188.
He remains affectionate toward Yunjian while coldly dismissing Xu’s demands and tears 189. He leaves the Educated Youth Courtyard and builds a small house near Wang Ermazi’s home, where he usually eats 194. When Xu attacks Yunjian after insulting them both, Sui Yun kicks her away, takes Yunjian’s hand, and leaves with the chilled mung bean soup she brought him 195.
He returns to the Li Kingdom with the emperor, Luoshui, and Yunjian once Luoshui has accumulated enough points 198.
Engagement
Their families arrange their engagement after their return. Yunjian states that she will not consider marriage before turning eighteen, and Sui Yun accepts her plans without objection 201.
On a later day off, his parents send him out to keep his fiancée company. He embraces Yunjian when she greets him and tells her that he came because he missed her; they subsequently walk toward the shops hand in hand 205.
Appearance
Sui Yun is strikingly handsome, with a tall, straight figure, broad shoulders, and a narrow waist. His father’s resemblance makes Yunjian feel she is seeing an older version of him 136.
- Eyes and lashes: Peach-blossom eyes framed by lashes compared to resting butterflies 46.
- Hands: Large palms and long, slender, jade-like fingers with defined joints and visible veins 47.
- Clothing: Wears black robes at his introduction and a fitted black outfit while waiting on horseback outside a banquet 46 122.
- Voice: Clear and pleasing, likened to jade striking stone; becomes notably warm when speaking to Yunjian 47 66.
- Usual expression: Aloof and forbidding, in sharp contrast to his smiles and tenderness around Yunjian 66 133.
Personality
Sui Yun is controlled, discerning, and difficult to intimidate. He uses an icy expression to keep his subordinates in line, and people unfamiliar with him hesitate to approach without important business. His childhood companions regard him as more calculating than his outward composure suggests 47 66.
With Yunjian, that reserve softens into patience, teasing, and practical care. He enjoys her chatter, accepts her gifts, and looks after her without making a spectacle of it. His willingness to postpone marriage until she is ready contrasts with his uncompromising refusal to indulge manipulative demands from Xia Shuang or Xu Miaomiao 47 66 187 201.
His loyalty extends to his mother, whose troublesome cousin he openly disregards. In official matters, he can separate personal feelings from reporting: his account of Duan Yifan’s misconduct consists strictly of facts 113 141.
