Background / History
Before transmigrating, Shuang worked as an actress. Her supposed knowledge of improved salt production comes from a brief acting role, rather than technical training. She approaches the emperor using mannerisms she previously employed when seeking roles from directors 10.
Her initial body belongs to Wenren Chun’s daughter in the Wenren family’s second branch. Her grandmother is Liu Yuner, the Old Princess Consort of Beiping. Shuang enjoys the Empress Dowager’s favor, but her family’s standing deteriorates as the emperor turns against Wenren Chun 9 12 21.
Shuang considers herself the novel’s protagonist and Wenren Luoshui a disposable supporting character. She expects a “heroine’s halo,” family support, and the anticipated male leads to secure her success even when events diverge from the story she remembers 10 21 26.
Appearance
- Original Wenren Shuang body: Clear, autumn-water-like eyes and delicate features that lend themselves to a fragile, helpless presentation 10 21 22.
- Xia Shuang identity: Fair-faced and unremarkable in individual features, but with a pure, innocent air and doe-like eyes 46.
- As the Seventh Princess: Initially wears nearly a hundred hair ornaments alongside numerous rings, bracelets, and enormous pearl earrings. Her tangled hairpins and excessive jewelry draw ridicule from the imperial women 65.
- After moving in with Mao Shaoqin: Abandons bright clothing and jewelry at his insistence. Luoshui later sees her in a dark-purple ruqun with unadorned pinned-up hair; she subsequently appears at the palace gates grimy and disheveled in a mouse-gray dress 67 71.
Personality
Shuang treats protagonist status as an entitlement to influence, admiration, and romance. When remembered opportunities disappear, she blames Luoshui or other characters for changing the plot rather than questioning her own assumptions. She even threatens to erase Luoshui from the world through her supposed heroine’s halo 16 18 21.
She frequently performs gentleness and distress to recruit protectors. With the Empress Dowager, she adopts an obedient manner; with Wenren Bing, she tearfully presents herself as Luoshui’s victim. As Xia Shuang, she depicts ordinary looks and remarks as persecution, despite receiving little encouragement from her intended audience 10 22 23 46.
Her treatment of people with less power is markedly different. Her maid Chunbi fears that she will throw objects at her, and possession of the Seventh Princess immediately brings out violent demands against palace servants. She also shows no concern when her parents and grandmother are imprisoned, instead berating her father for failing to rescue her 18 26 64.
In romance, Shuang mistakes Mao Shaoqin’s contempt and control for affection. She willingly finances him, changes her appearance for him, and remains devoted after he takes her valuables and reduces her to household labor. The narrative also identifies the plot’s influence as a reason she does not consider leaving him 66 67 71.
Abilities & Skills
Knowledge of the Original Novel
Shuang remembers plot details and attempts to convert them into political leverage 14 18.
- Plans a rescue of Yunjian to earn Minister Yun’s gratitude 14.
- Intends to blackmail General Zhu using the secret that his wife and daughter are foreign spies 18.
- Her information becomes unreliable when others intervene: Yunjian escapes before her planned rescue, and the Zhu household’s spies are arrested before she can approach the general 14 16 18.
Rogue System and Rebirth
Shuang binds herself to an escaped, defective system that was meant to be sent to the Destruction Center 31.
- Each rebirth initially costs ten years of lifespan 31.
- The system promises to replenish her lifespan through men she “conquers,” including lifespan taken when those men divorce or murder their legal wives for her 31.
- After three failed attempts, it reports two remaining attempts and a 99% failure chance, then offers a different mission mode 62.
- Shuang’s hostility toward the system leads to a revised mission that consumes all her remaining lifespan and makes failure permanently end her opportunities for rebirth 64.
Captivating Gu Insect
While occupying Yun Shuang, she carries a Gu insect that clouds others’ judgment and draws both men and women toward her 31.
- Shuang interprets the household’s attraction as proof of her extraordinary personal charm 31.
- Luoshui identifies the insect and extracts it with a yellow-paper rooster, ending its influence 31.
Life Plunder
The system’s Life Plunder mission allows Shuang to take another person’s place and enjoy that person’s life 63.
- Wenren Luoshui is unavailable as a target; Shuang’s level is too low to target the Eldest Princess 63.
- She instead occupies the Seventh Princess’s body 64.
- To make the replacement permanent, she must persuade everyone to accept her as the real princess. Success would prevent the displaced Seventh Princess from returning 64.
- The royal family learns of the possession through Luoshui’s system and refuses to recognize her as their daughter or sister 64 65 71.
Performance and Emotional Manipulation
Shuang uses her acting experience and vulnerable appearance to seek favor, protection, or sympathy 10 22 46.
- Calms the Empress Dowager by gently patting her back and relies on her protection during the dispute over an appointment 9 11.
- Recruits Wenren Bing to confront Luoshui by describing herself as an abused cousin 22.
- Her performances fail against observers such as Yunjian and Sui Yun, who openly challenge her behavior 23 46.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Failed Bid for an Official Post
The Empress Dowager demands that Shuang receive an appointment because Luoshui has been made a female official. Shuang then offers an allegedly improved salt-production method in exchange for a position. Although initially interested, the emperor asks her to explain its principles and procedure; she cannot do so 9 10.
During the audience, Luoshui uses a system item to let Shuang hear her thoughts for ten minutes and deliberately provokes her. Shuang responds by accusing Luoshui of sabotage rather than answering the emperor’s question. She retreats to the Empress Dowager’s protection, but subsequently tries to obstruct Luoshui’s treatment of the dowager and is kicked down by the emperor 10 11 12.
Failed Schemes and the Potato Scandal
Following Wenren Chun’s demotion, Shuang directs him toward the site where she expects Yunjian’s kidnapping to create a rescue opportunity. No one appears, and Chun returns home and beats her. Her next attempt—to pressure General Zhu through knowledge of his household’s spies—fails because the suspects are already being arrested 14 16 18.
Shuang then threatens Luoshui directly and enlists Wenren Bing against her. Their interference with the imperial potato project escalates into public accusations that they tried to steal experimental seeds and sell them abroad. A crowd pelts them with rotten food, and the investigation also exposes wrongdoing involving their relatives 21 22 23 25 26.
Wenren Chun, Wenren Hongyu, and implicated officials are sentenced to exile and confiscation of property. Shuang, held separately from the other imprisoned relatives, reacts to the decree with terror 27.
Rebirth as Yun Shuang
Shuang reappears within the Yun household as Yun Shuang. Luoshui’s system exposes her identity and warns that her planned manipulation could lead the family to favor her recklessly, surrender a military tiger tally, and ultimately face execution. Luoshui removes the Captivating Gu supporting her influence 31.
Later, Shuang tries to climb into the Director of the Imperial Academy’s bed. She and Ye Shi are expelled from the Ye household, refused shelter by the Yun household, and forced to rent a small courtyard 34.
Rebirth as Xia Shuang
As Xia Shuang, she meets the Second, Third, and Fifth Princes and Sui Yun while selling herself to pay for her father’s burial. They give her money and verify her account, but she insists on following them back to the capital. Her immediate attempt to portray Luoshui as a persecutor earns a rebuke from Sui Yun rather than sympathy 46.
She later arrives at the Prince of Beiping’s Residence with Wang Miao and Xia Yangyang, seeking shelter through a claimed connection to Tie Lihua. The household rejects their manipulation; Xia Yangyang turns against Wang Miao, and the servants eventually escort Wang Miao and Xia Shuang out 53 54.
Commandery Princess Nanyi subsequently orders Xia Shuang beaten to death after Guan Xiyuan demands that the Seventh Princess accept her as an equal wife. Her system counts this as her third failed rebirth attempt and offers Life Plunder 62 63.
Possession of the Seventh Princess
After taking the Seventh Princess’s body, Shuang slaps the Senior Palace Maid over her hairstyle and orders her beaten to death. Her sudden cruelty and extravagant dress make her unlike the princess the household knows 64 65.
She then demands that the emperor’s consorts kneel before her because she is the Empress’s legitimate daughter. The Empress instead subjects her to Aunt Fang’s etiquette instruction, daily lessons, written reflections, and scripture copying. After reports that she secretly sticks needles into dolls representing palace maids, Shuang is ordered to Wuwei Temple, a place of confinement for disgraced imperial women 65.
Mao Shaoqin and Loss of Royal Recognition
Shuang escapes the temple procession and meets Mao Shaoqin through an encounter arranged by her system. Mao deliberately collides with her after noticing her valuable jewelry. She becomes infatuated, buys him extensive clothing and a three-courtyard mansion, and treats his lectures as affection 66.
Living with him as his wife, she hands over her valuables. Mao sells her servants, gives her only twenty copper coins a day for groceries and personal expenses, and makes her perform the household work. Concerned about the consequences for the real Seventh Princess, Luoshui alters Mao’s character so that he enjoys applying feces as a facial mask 67.
Mao’s subsequent “golden juice” business provokes neighboring shopkeepers, who demand compensation. Shuang returns to the palace seeking money, but the Empress publicly rejects her claim to be her daughter, and the emperor has her imprisoned for two days. By her release, debt collectors have crippled one of Mao’s arms and one of his legs. The court is informed that Shuang is an impostor, and she later returns home to find Mao injured 71 72 79.
