Geography
- Original landscape: An oval island with lush vegetation, mostly flat terrain, and one small hill crowned by a castle 3.
- Coastal access: The mainland-side dock belonged to the fief. Kroya’s initial boat crossing to the island took roughly seven or eight minutes 2 3.
- Nearby sea-folk territory: Originally only a few dozen kilometers away, making the island vulnerable to sea-folk intervention 2 13.
- Freshwater: Early facilities included a concealed castle spring and a lake behind the hill. Later surveys recorded 121 spring veins, all of which dried up when the island was detached from the continental shelf 10 21 189.
- Submerged structure: The island was cone-shaped beneath the water, with only a small remaining connection to the continental shelf before its first voyage 189.
Changes in Size and Layout
| Period | Documented condition |
|---|---|
| Original fief | Mapped at 1,000 hectares—one-fifth of the usual 5,000-hectare allotment for a first-rank mage 2. |
| Major renovation | Straight roads linked the docks, Reef Town, residential districts, and growing areas. Vegetation was cleared or transplanted rather than entirely removed 169 171. |
| Root-based expansion | The formerly oval island became a larger, regular circle. Roots spread into the surrounding sea, accumulating ocher mist and dust; new housing surrounded the central fields 229. |
| Established reclamation project | Reached 5,000 hectares and continued growing 244. |
| Astral relocation | Reef Island and a stretch of its surrounding sea were separated from Semrio and transported together to Module 626 382. |
History
Kroya’s Arrival
Kroya received Reef Island as a notably undersized and impoverished fief. Its residents lived in low stone houses, wore rags, and appeared underfed. Batos reported that the population had fallen from roughly 700 to 284, and that an unidentified baron had taken approximately 500 people a year earlier. Kroya intended to recover the missing residents once he had sufficient strength, while keeping Batos under Rob’s supervision during his initial investigation 2 3.
The first survey found fifteen coconut trees and one White Ironstone mine, but no additional mineral resources or magic plants. Kroya began developing the territory through magical agriculture, enhanced spring water, and the training of Rob and his four knights. The Kaba Beast discovered outside the castle became an early subject of his inscription experiments 3 10.
Sea-Folk Trade and Agricultural Development
A mermaid merchant arrived under an Ancient Contract signed by the Mage Association, which required trade with the sea folk to begin once a mage settled on Reef Island. Kroya had not been informed of this obligation. He subsequently exchanged exceptionally pure waterlight essence for merfolk protection of his subjects and magical beasts at sea, along with permission to gather naturally occurring marine resources 13 28.
Agricultural development expanded through magic-enhanced water, growth potions, and natural mana extracted from Elena’s teardrop crystals. During the sudden northern blizzard, prepared housing and food stores protected the residents, while Elena and three other Children of Harvest helped endangered tropical magic plants survive the cold 10 33 121.
Population Growth and Renovation
The island received purchased farm servants, displaced Convicts, and children sent by Baron Andy. Newcomers were housed, washed, fed, supervised, and assigned work. Seventeen former prisoners from Olivier were given ordinary accommodation rather than special status, allowing them to experience the island’s daily life before Kroya considered accepting their allegiance 131 132 136 137.
Kroya’s major renovation reorganized the island into residential and cultivation districts. Reef Town served as a transition between farm-servant status and free citizenship. Sandworms leveled the terrain, workers paved roads with white soft mud, and the Magic Field Grape Vine spread across unused land. The renovations were largely complete within three days 169 171.
Mobility and Wider Influence
A merfolk ritual disrupted external communications and transformed the Atlantis Sea. Through a shadow embodying the former owner’s desires, Kroya wished for permanent ownership of Reef Island and any territory his plants and beasts could occupy. The Goddess of the Ocean and Moonlight granted the wish and marked the island as his 183.
Kroya later severed Reef Island from the continental shelf and conducted a 100-kilometer trial voyage. His propulsion system kept the island afloat, but the separation disrupted freshwater and earth-derived mana supplies. Staff inspected transport arrays and prepared a new undersea route while marine allies cleared the destination 189.
The island became the administrative and technological center of Kroya’s expanding territory. After the war against Dukes Olivier and Nall, Princess Mibeca delivered the royal scepter recognizing Kroya as Reef Duke. The accompanying Floating Island Key granted access to a separate astral island formerly belonging to Archmage Eurydice—not to Reef Island itself 258 259.
Relocation to the Astral Plane
After decades of development, Kroya offered residents the choice of accompanying Reef Island into the Astral Plane. Longtime islanders chose to remain with their home, recalling the labor and rewards that had built it. Some Northern Frontier apprentices stayed behind because they were not yet ready to make the journey 382.
Using World Puzzle with the World Consciousness’s permission, Kroya separated the island and surrounding sea from Semrio and brought them to Module 626. Its vegetation and life stood out against the module’s barren surroundings. The Tower Spirit began investigating the module’s ability to accommodate many forms of magic, including divine and demonic power 382.
Infrastructure and Facilities
Castle, Mage Tower, and Underground Complex
- Hilltop castle: Originally a crude but imposing three-story stone building overlooking the island. It housed Kroya’s laboratory, warehouse, and concealed emergency freshwater spring 3 10 13.
- Mage Tower: Eventually housed the shark Tower Spirit, research facilities, and secret chambers. The tower later rose into the air independently of the island 144 254 336.
- Underground laboratories: Built for potion-making and magical constructs requiring a stable environment, unlike the chaotic mana conditions beneath the sea 171.
- Excavation network: Burrowing Mice and Wind-Eroded Sandworms dug tunnels and chambers, leaving room for propulsion mechanisms and later upgrades 171.
Mana and Water Systems
| System | Function and limitations |
|---|---|
| Magic Spring Pearl | Enriched the castle spring with water magic. The water supported magic-power baths, growth potions, and attempts to mutate coconut trees 10. |
| Coral Mana Pools | Three pools stored pure, water, and fire magic, with a combined capacity equivalent to approximately 500 level-one magic crystals. Pipes connected the system to the sunflower field 45. |
| Magic Field Grape Vine | Converted the ground it covered into Magic Fields, expanding cultivation across unused island land 169. |
| Undersea fire-magic harvest | Aether Moss gathered power near an undersea volcano; branches and a Magic Field Method array carried it toward the Air Coral Base. Magic field moss produced repeatedly harvestable, six-pointed flowers 114. |
| Emergency mana conduits | Supplied magic through underground pipes after detachment from the continental shelf depleted the island’s natural mana connections 189. |
Air Coral Base and Undersea Pasture
- Air Coral origins: Kroya placed the first Air Coral in the freshwater lake and inscribed it with the Bubble Spell 21.
- Underwater settlement: The Air Coral Base eventually occupied tens of thousands of hectares of seabed, with illuminated streets, shops, dozens of factories, laboratories, and tens of thousands of miners 244.
- Bubble protection: The evolved Vast Sea Bubble Spell linked bubbles so that they shared resistance and became stronger as their number increased. Its recorded maximum toughness reached faint divine power 270.
- Environmental control: The Air Coral Sprite maintained suitable temperature, humidity, and magic composition inside the bubbles, which admitted people approved by Kroya 270.
- Structural risk: A major bubble failure would threaten an enormous population and industrial investment 244.
- Undersea Pasture: Thirty Mushroom People improved livestock care through their affinity with the pasture fungus. Sunlight-radiating trees later provided warmth and illumination beneath the sea 144 229.
Transport
| Transport | Use |
|---|---|
| Air Coral passage | A protected underwater route more than ten kilometers long. Visitors were required to wear Sun Emblems during Zell and Stein’s arrival 174. |
| Spatial Magic Arrays | Connected Reef Island with its commercial shop and other destinations; remained operational during the trial voyage except for already disrupted overseas links 189 233. |
| Magical moving roads | Carried pedestrians rapidly across the island; Jamie and Sophia traveled from the center to the shore in roughly two minutes 244. |
| Giant box jellyfish | Ferried passengers between the shore and the Air Coral Base, accepting payment through Sunflower Pendants 244. |
| Sea train | Connected the underwater settlement with the lavender-covered island visited by Jamie and Sophia 244. |
| Island Roamer C-3 Mana Propulsion Device | Used one master unit and eighteen subsidiary units to envelop the submerged island in magical mist, maintain buoyancy, and move it across the sea. Mana consumption was extremely high 189. |
Healthcare, Leisure, and Education
- Sunflower hospital: Occupied the former church, whose old name remained in use. Sunflower healers performed examinations and treatments 244.
- Deep-Sea Hot Spring: Available through medical authorization; Sophia was approved for treatment after an examination identified extensive damage from hardship 244.
- Paradise Buffet Cafeteria: Provided food and access to a restorative treatment using Womb Sea water, which repaired Sophia’s injuries while she slept 244.
- Oceanarium: Displayed marine and freshwater fish in an ocean-themed setting decorated partly by island children 171.
- Undersea Paradise and Golden Apple Paradise: Served as entertainment destinations. Kroya granted returning apprentices seven days of free access after five years of work 269.
- Magic academies: Kroya announced affinity-specific academies, a new meditation method, and construction competitions. Registration was handled through the Reef Island Magic Administration Office 269.
Government and Residents
Administration
- Kroya — Sets policy, directs research, and delegates much of the domain’s routine work rather than managing every task personally 10 116.
- Rob — Original chief steward; organized surveys, agriculture, newcomer reception, and defense. He later retired to reunite with his family 10 131 258.
- Shark Tower Spirit — Monitors the island through screens and increasingly manages its automated Intelligent Magic Arrays 144 263.
- Mifein — Oversees sensitive administrative matters and begins training Semir to assume some of Rob’s responsibilities 258.
- Jamie and the apprentices — Receive newcomers, organize labor, build infrastructure, and undertake projects beyond the island 131 132 243.
- Semir — Contributes to community organization and housing; later works at the Golem Main Factory 116 121 299.
Settlement and Citizenship
| Policy or practice | Details |
|---|---|
| Initial ownership system | Residents could not freely take resources such as coconuts without the lord’s permission 3. |
| Newcomer accommodation | Purchased workers lived in supervised dormitories while learning island rules and earning resources toward homes in Reef Town 131. |
| Labor requirements | Jamie organized 630 newly arrived serfs into six teams. Shirking could halve a team’s supplies and jeopardize permission to settle 132. |
| Path to freedom | Successful development was intended to let farm servants become free citizens, able to leave the territory and choose where to live 169. |
| Later abolition | By the Gray Sand Desert project, Kroya had abolished slavery throughout the Northern Frontier 239. |
| Resident identification | Sunflower Pendants recorded identity, held deposited funds, and were required for island activities 243. |
| Monthly payment | Official residents received thirty gold coins per month 243. |
| Residence restrictions | Permission to live on Reef Island itself was limited, particularly favoring people who had contributed to its development 235. |
| Conduct of apprentices | Kroya did not permit apprentices to abuse their extraordinary status; many remained involved in ordinary neighborhood tasks 229. |
Resources and Economy
Production
- White Ironstone and metal refining: The original mine and stored ore supported Kaba Beast experiments. Kroya considered merchant-supplied ore as a way to strengthen the beasts while earning income from refining 10 13 21.
- Agriculture: Sea God Barley, olives, ordinary food crops, and an expanding variety of magic plants supported both subsistence and trade 10 33 169.
- Marine resources: Coastal waters contained schools of magic fish numbering in the thousands or tens of thousands. Merfolk permission covered naturally occurring resources, not plants or treasures owned or cultivated by others 28 92.
- Crystal supplies: A separate extraction site sent magic crystals and waterlight crystals to Reef Island through a castle-linked teleportation array 166.
- Potions: Hanging-flask grass successfully produced Sea Spirit Lingzhi Potion, providing a basis for a larger production line 171.
- Spatial tools: Pouches made from shed Aether Wolf skins formed natural storage spaces and were manufactured on Reef Island 236.
- Golems: The Golem Main Factory produced advanced bodies, including Ropas’s humanlike, transformable golem body 299.
Trade and Exchange
- Internal exchange: Silver and copper coins purchased daily necessities through Rob, while supernatural materials were exchanged through a reward-point system 156.
- Commercial shop: A permanent Spatial Magic Array supported growing trade between Reef Island and the Magical Beast, Magic Plant, and Battle Pet Shop 233.
- Exported technology: Reef Island’s heaters impressed Baron Andy; its living floating-moon alloy, arrays, and plant-based systems later supported the Gray Sand Desert’s modular ship city and generated maintenance income 131 261.
- External construction contracts: Jamie’s successful Gray Sand Desert infrastructure project brought in hundreds of thousands of magic crystals 243.
- Imported mana: Power absorbed from Leviathan in the Gray Sand Desert was transported to Reef Island for storage, although its public destination was described as destruction 261.
Defenses and Security
Island Protection
- Combat plants: Sunflowers, thorny plants, resin peas, and warrior-like bamboo combined ranged attacks, restraint, and precise interference with enemy mana 174.
- Proven defense: The island’s coordinated ambush killed the level-four mage Zell. Bamboo disabled Stein’s escape device and knocked him unconscious without destroying the device 174.
- Magical-beast patrols: The Olive Elf and its companions independently prevented dangerous beasts from harming residents 171.
- Knight armaments: Kroya supplied Rob with sacred-white-iron crossbows whose enchanted bolts could burn enemies to ash 116.
- Marine allies: Sea Spirit Dolphins guarded nearby waters, cleared dangerous fish, and assisted with transport and seabed construction 116 136 189.
Surveillance and Access Control
- Woodstar Curving Vine King: Its vines provided guidance and surveillance along roads, while arrays monitored newcomer housing 131 171.
- Sea-glow algae: Adapted into a mobile underwater surveillance network 171.
- Factory screening: Workers permitted into Reef Island’s and the Air Coral Base’s factories underwent testing, including Kroya’s personal checks through musical movements 242.
- Administrative authority: Identification from the Reef Island Administration ranked above that of the Western Frontier Administration 299.
