Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First-Level Mage — inherited starting rank | 1 2 17 | Inherits a weak mage’s body and knowledge: ten first-rank spells and two second-rank spells. His mana reserves initially cannot activate the Seven Luminaries Divine Law Array, even with sea-glow algae supplying additional power. |
| Second-Level Mage | 20 | Breaks through after three days of concentrated meditation using the Song of Red, Thirsty Sea Glow Algae, and his strong mental power. A second magic vortex doubles his mana capacity and slightly increases its purity. The advancement enables study of the Song of Red’s second movement and gives him sufficient capacity to complete the luminary array. |
Background / History
Kroya takes over a mage’s body after its original owner suffers an emotional collapse and loses control of his magic. He spends three days absorbing the owner’s memories. The original mage had been manipulated by an apprentice of a fourth-level mage into accepting a three-year territorial-development challenge: unless the Mage Association judged his territory satisfactory, he would lose the right to return to the Royal Capital 1.
The promised territory had been replaced with an impoverished, isolated coast threatened by dangerous creatures. Kroya nevertheless prefers the prospect of living as a minor lord to returning immediately to the capital, where perceptive mages might discover the change in identity and dissect him for research. He intends to establish his own strength before retaliating against the person responsible for the exile 1.
His inherited resources include two Blaze Horses, magic crystals, gold, spell materials, four contracted knights, and the steward Rob. A friend of the original owner, skilled in magical cultivation, had also supplied Sea God Barley, sunflower, and olive seeds. One sunflower seed reveals Kroya’s Astral Spirit Inscription ability, giving him the means to turn farming into a source of magical power 1.
Appearance
Kroya is described as a young man who maintains a calm, dignified presentation as a mage and territorial lord 3 9.
- Clothing: Deep blue mage robes 3 22.
- Staff: Carries a walnut staff, sometimes using it as a walking stick 7.
- Magical accompaniment: Inscribed Thirsty Sea Glow Algae follow him, surrounding him with blue light at night 9.
- Guild meeting form: Appears as a hazy, deep-blue mist with a humanoid outline and an inorganic-sounding voice during his meeting with Lady Seagull; this is not his ordinary bodily appearance 47.
Personality
Kroya approaches magic as a practical tool. He compares the sunflowers’ stored Sunflame Power to solar energy, envisions Kaba Beasts as living ore-processing furnaces, and pursues magical crops that can supply potion ingredients. His enthusiasm for discovery repeatedly turns into questions about output, cost, and reproducibility 2 4 12 26.
He is ambitious but cautious. He conceals his unusually rapid advancement from the Mage Association, rejects a dangerous mental-energy training shortcut, and discards separated divine power rather than experiment without safeguards. He also leaves an unfamiliar mushroom in place when he cannot determine whether moving it would harm it 20 29 33 39.
His generosity is closely tied to usefulness and trust. He strengthens Rob and the knights so that he can delegate more work, rewards competent labor, and offers an overlooked warehouse servant a better position after noticing his careful records. At the same time, he insists on hierarchy, loyalty, and binding contracts, particularly when dealing with intelligent magical beasts 2 5 10 13 25 38.
Kroya prefers research and domestic comfort to routine administration. He dislikes being interrupted by minor business, enjoys seafood, and decides to learn Mage’s Hand after carrying supplies himself. His commercial opportunism has limits: despite discovering that Kermoyer’s refined metal is worth more than expected, he honors their agreed price 22 29 30 39.
Abilities & Skills
Astral Spirit Inscription
Also called the Astral Body Inscription Technique, this ability lets Kroya examine compatible magical plants and beasts and inscribe spells into their astral spirit bodies 1 3 4.
- Reads desires: Hears thoughts from plants, beasts, and even individual organs, using those preferences to identify suitable modifications 4 16.
- Grants new abilities: Can give magical beasts spells they did not possess naturally—something ordinarily requiring rare learning or divine-blessing scrolls 12.
- Requires learned spells: Kroya must master a spell before inscribing it, and the recipient must be compatible with it 2.
- Consumes resources: Inspection and inscription strain mana and mental power; more complex astral bodies are harder to handle 2 4 16.
- Allows growth-dependent effects: An inscription’s results can develop as its recipient grows and absorbs particular kinds of magic 2 16.
| Recipient | Inscription / Modification | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Sunflowers | Sunflare Ray | Gather sunlight into Sunflame Power, fire on command, and retain unused power in their seeds. A mature sunflower demonstrates automatic targeting 1 2 11. |
| Thirsty Sea Glow Algae | Song of Red meditation method | Become responsive to Kroya, supply mental energy during inscription, and gain the ability to live outside seawater 8 9. |
| Eleven Kaba Beasts | Steel Hardening on teeth; Magic Power Forging on stomachs | Eat white ironstone, refine it internally, and expel usable metal. Digested impurities may strengthen their organs 12. |
| Magic-Storing Hanging Flask Grass | Fire Spirit Purification; Water Restoration Art | Gives separate flasks fire-liquid preservation and prospective water-based restorative properties. The third, “mixing” flask remains unresolved 16. |
| Woodstar Curving Vine King | Watching Demon Eye, combined with eye crystals | Becomes a mobile surveillance system that stores and reproduces images through a magic array 29 30. |
Poem of Rainbow Light and Song of Red
Kroya discovers the Poem of Rainbow Light hidden within the decorative patterns of a Mansion Spell scroll. Its first section, Song of Red, combines musical spellcraft with meditation 7.
- Meditation: Absorbs red magical particles from sunlight at roughly twenty times the rate of his previous method. The initial technique cannot be used after dark 7.
- Crimson Rondo: Allows two spells to be cast simultaneously and can layer the associated offensive chant 20.
- Crimson Light Chant: Releases sound waves and red, note-shaped mana. Its strength scales with mana reserves and Kroya’s understanding and control of the poem; his first full test rivals sustained third-level Chain Fireballs and drains his mana 20.
- Quiet Little Serenade: Stabilizes mana and lets him control a fireball without allowing it to explode 41.
- Learning limit: After mastering the third movement, he still cannot understand the remaining movements 41.
Magical Agriculture and Mana Infrastructure
- Magic Field Method: Draws root-like patterns on mana crystals to spread orderly mana roots through soil. These enrich the field and kill concealed insect eggs 4 5.
- Growth support: Makes growth potions and uses magically enriched spring water to cultivate crops and encourage coconut trees to become Magic Plants 10.
- Natural-mana cultivation: Plans to use purified teardrop crystals to expand food production, reduce the olives’ expected fruiting time from three years to one, and cultivate ordinary crops with magical potential 33.
- Underwater cultivation: Recognizes Air Coral’s air-filled lakebed enclosure as a site for growing water-aligned plants and as a possible foundation for mining or settlement 22.
- Mana Pools: Builds three coral pools for pure, water, and fire magic. Together they hold the equivalent of about five hundred level-one magic crystals 45.
Luminary Refining and Power Separation
- Seven Luminaries Divine Law Array: Studies the array required to stabilize Water Luminary Crystals under the Mage Association’s ancient Merfolk contract 14 17 20.
- Waterlight essence: Refines Water Luminary material into valuable essence; forty-six drops delivered to the Merfolk become usable reproductive resources for their community 28 29.
- Separation and fusion: Learns Ilyst’s method for separating and combining powers from the Woodstar Curving Vine King 25.
- Divine-power extraction: Separates the Earth Mother Goddess’s divine power from Elena’s teardrops, leaving natural mana with purity comparable to a tier-three Vitality Potion 33.
- Alchemy application: Finds the separation-and-fusion method more effective for his potion brewing than the beginner alchemy guide’s procedure 36.
Spellcraft, Beast Handling, and Combat
- Utility spells: Uses Eagle Eye for surveying, Beast-Calming to soothe magical creatures, a Calming Spell on Rob, and Magic Drain to replenish mana from stored magical power 3 4 13 17.
- Magic-power baths: Uses an exclusive Mage Association technique to channel crystal mana through water into Rob and the knights. The procedure strengthens them but leaves Kroya exhausted 10.
- Contracts: Binds the intelligent vine and Burrowing Mice with Master-Servant Contracts before entrusting them with work 25 38.
- Mass taming: Subdues eighty Fish-Tailed Sea Ducks through five days of controlled exhaustion, repeated fireball attacks, and mana-recovery potions 41.
- Combined-arms tactics: Coordinates dolphins, magical fish, and ducks against a level-three shark, adding fireballs to freezing attacks that weaken its skin for the dolphins’ water jets 42.
Potion Making
- Sea Spirit Coconut Potion: Creates a second-tier, pale-blue potion carrying water mana that cools and gently conditions the body 36.
- Product presentation: Preserves a coconut shell as a bottle and intends the potion’s scent and local appearance to appeal to nobles 36.
- Morning Dew Potions: Negotiates sales while acknowledging that the experimental product remains unstable and limited in supply 48.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Walnut staff — Regularly carried when inspecting the territory and responding to emergencies 7 8.
- Spatial pouch and Merfolk storage artifact — Used to carry materials and safeguard items such as the Crescent Moon Fruit 4 31.
- Mansion Spell scroll — Contains the concealed Poem of Rainbow Light 7.
- Magic Spring Pearl and Sea Moon Clam shell — Enrich freshwater with water magic; the pearl can recharge within its shell 10.
- Sacred Spring Trade Guild card and outlet — Provide remote purchasing, appraisal, and delivery. Kroya reaches 3,554 membership points, below the 10,000 required for the next level 15 26 48.
- Crescent Moon Fruit — Releases tide-sounding mist under moonlight, improving sleep quality and mental-power growth 31 41.
- Wind Sprite Feather Pendant — Creates pale-green wings for brief flight or gliding. Kroya notes that poorly maneuvered flight can make its user an easy target for a mage 19.
- Magic Shark Core — Contains the defeated shark’s soul. Kroya considers using it for a future tower spirit but postpones the project because even basic Mage Tower materials cost thousands of magic crystals 45.
- Shell magic tool — Used to bring back supplies from his marine expedition 45.
Relationships
- Rob — Trusted steward and chief administrator. Kroya relies on him to rebuild the household, survey the island, manage cultivation, and handle negotiations and sensitive information 5 10 13 33 36.
- Joshua, Ate, Chris, and Norman — Four contracted knights who accompany him into exile. Kroya assigns them military, apprentice-selection, and farm-management duties and strengthens them through a magic-power bath 2 5 10 41.
- Batos — Former lord of Reef Island. Initially kept under watch, then assigned to care for Kaba Beasts and coconut trees; Kroya tests his honesty and acceptance of his reduced position before deciding to retain him 3 4 6 34.
- Alia — Merfolk Archmage and principal contact for the ancient contract. Their initially coercive encounter develops into valuable cooperation because Kroya can refine waterlight essence needed by the Merfolk 13 14 29.
- King Mihail — Recognizes Kroya’s importance to Merfolk reproduction and authorizes Alia to grant reasonable requests in exchange for continued help 29.
- Baron Kermoyer — Recurring client for sacred white iron refining. Pays with magical creatures and plants, including the Woodstar Curving Vine King, and commissions a further three thousand jin of metal 23 41.
- Sai Liu — Merchant associated with Kermoyer and a distributor of Kroya’s sunflower seeds. Secretly seeks help after the Northern Territory Envoy’s son demands further supplies 23 36.
- Woodstar Curving Vine King — Contracted companion, former guard plant of Ilyst, and source of rare luminary knowledge. Kroya transforms it into a castle watcher; it also assists him with research and household needs 25 29 30 45.
- Sea Spirit Dolphins — A contracted male-and-female pair purchased to collect Sea Spirit Pearls. They become affectionate companions, bring him seafood, recruit magical fish, and support his marine operations 26 27 29 42.
- Elena — A Child of Harvest whose teardrops supply natural mana. Kroya arranges rewards and improved positions for her family in exchange for a regular supply 32 33.
- Lady Seagull — Sacred Spring Trade Guild representative. Negotiates compensation, purchases, and future consideration for improved Morning Dew Potions 47 48.
- Unnamed disciple — Kroya chooses a magic-field-producing plant as a gift and selects useful crops with the disciple’s future in mind 48.
- Original owner’s cultivation friend — Supplies the seeds that support Kroya’s first agricultural experiments; had been absent when the exile scheme was arranged 1.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishing Reef Island
- Arrives to find 135 households and 284 residents, with a single White Ironstone mine. After learning that an unidentified baron removed roughly five hundred people, Kroya resolves to recover them once stronger 3.
- Reorganizes the household and military, recruits local apprentices, prepares a magic field, and plants twelve Sunflare Ray-inscribed sunflowers 5.
- Resolves the immediate sea-glow algae threat through inscription after a fireball fails to destroy the colony, then develops the spring-water and Kaba Beast systems supporting his domain 8 10 12.
Merfolk Contract and Commercial Expansion
- Learns that Reef Island’s mage is obligated to stabilize Water Luminary Crystals. The agreement offers resources, protection from Sea Folk incursions, and access to deeper-water gathering 13 14.
- Uses Merfolk payment to purchase array materials and experimental plants through the Sacred Spring Trade Guild 15 16.
- Advances to Second-Level Mage but delays reporting the breakthrough to avoid attracting stronger mages seeking his discoveries 20.
- Establishes sacred-white-iron refining work with Kermoyer and acquires the ancient vine, whose knowledge expands his understanding of luminary essences 23 25.
Agricultural Research and Creature Networks
- Converts the vine into a mobile watcher and investigates both the Crescent Moon Fruit’s restorative effects and unexpectedly early barley ripening 29 30 31.
- Identifies Elena’s blessing as the barley’s cause and removes divine power from her teardrops to obtain an agricultural resource without retaining the religious component 32 33.
- Develops Sea Spirit Coconut Potion and takes on Sai Liu’s urgent sunflower-seed problem 36.
- Discovers a mushroom sustained by a depleted Void Luminary Crystal and sacred white iron, preserving it in place rather than risking relocation 39.
Marine Operations and Further Development
- Tames the Fish-Tailed Sea Ducks, consults local fishermen, and prepares Air Coral specimens for marine outposts 41.
- Defeats a level-three shark through coordinated creature attacks, later discovering its unusually valuable soul-bearing Magic Core 42 45.
- Builds coral Mana Pools instead of pursuing an unaffordable Mage Tower 45.
- Writes to a Mage Association contact connected to an Archmage, aiming to obtain information, cheaper magical knowledge, political protection, and eventual leverage against his enemy 46.
- Negotiates for magic-field plants, soothing lilies, and thicksoil potatoes. The guild’s crop seeds lose vitality after two generations unless he purchases an expensive preservation formula 48.
- Finds that the newly acquired Magic Field Grape Vine is a rare elemental plant whose physical form is constructed from elements 49.
