Background / History
Liao Kai has served Ji Yanzhi for seven or eight years by the time of the events at Shili’s headquarters. He knows his employer’s rules well enough that Ji Yanzhi treats his interruption of an important research meeting as a sign of an urgent problem 22.

Personality
Liao Kai is disciplined and responsive to Ji Yanzhi’s instructions, including unspoken ones. A glance from his employer is enough for him to follow Wang Jianming outside and arrange surveillance. He also knows when to stop speaking: when Ji Yanzhi threatens him for explaining his concern for Ji Ting, Liao Kai immediately falls silent 25 49.
His obedience does not prevent him from showing concern for Ji Ting. He tries to explain why Ji Yanzhi rushed to Crane Garden and later worries when the injured Ji Ting falls asleep in the car. However, he remains cautious about family authority, initially suggesting that Ji Ting consult the chairman before reporting Ji Shilei’s assault 24 25.
He is skeptical of clumsy deception. Xu Ren’s exaggerated reaction and unnecessary denials make him suspicious, while Wang Jianming’s performance as a concerned teacher earns his private contempt 19 20 48.

- House arrest: Ji Yanzhi summons Liao Kai and his men before ordering Ji Ting’s phone and car keys confiscated and forbidding him from leaving home without permission 5.
- Medical-center surveillance: Liao Kai reports that Lu Yanchu remains at Ruihe and that one of his men has also spotted Ji Ting there 8.
Unit One Investigation
- Liao Kai brings Xu Ren to Ji Yanzhi through the west building’s side entrance. During the ensuing investigation, he informs Xu Ren that he must remain at the residence for two days and escorts him to a prepared guest room 19 20.
- After Ji Yanzhi discusses Xu Ren’s patent materials with him, Liao Kai personally escorts him back to campus around midnight. The next morning, he brings Xu Ren to Shili’s headquarters 21 22.

Crane Garden Aftermath
- Liao Kai brings the car around as Ji Yanzhi leaves Crane Garden with the injured Ji Ting. He retrieves a first-aid kit that he previously arranged to have placed in the vehicle 24.
- His warning about Ji Ting sleeping after blood loss alarms Ji Yanzhi. At the hospital, he is assigned to stay with Ji Ting while his employer returns to work 25.
