Background / History
Ace was born to Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. To conceal him from the World Government’s search for Roger’s child, Rouge carried him for twenty months and died after giving birth. Roger entrusted his unborn child to Garp, who secretly helped ensure Ace survived 347.
Raised at the Dadan Family’s hideout on Mount Colubo, Ace grew up hearing hostility toward his father and his own existence. Dadan feared that harboring the “devil’s son” would endanger the household if the government discovered him. Ace adopted his mother’s surname, Portgas, out of gratitude for her sacrifice 124 339.
Barn helped Ace separate his own worth from Roger’s reputation and later described Roger’s refusal to abandon endangered companions. Ace gradually came to accept that Roger loved him, while choosing Whitebeard as the father who had actually given him affection and belonging 136 148 339.
Appearance
- Whitebeard tattoo on his back: Ace calls it his “pride and joy,” openly displaying his allegiance to Whitebeard 202 204.
- Hat with two face emblems: Its brim holds the Vivre Cards he gives Luffy during their Alabasta reunion 204.
Personality
As a child, Ace is hostile, guarded, and deeply troubled by his parentage. He initially rejects Luffy’s friendship with dangerous attempts to drive him away, including felling a tree and breaking a suspension bridge beneath him. His ambition to become a renowned pirate grows from a desire to prove that he existed, even if the world refuses to acknowledge him 124 132.
His brothers become central to his sense of belonging. He accepts Sabo’s noble origins without rejecting him, fiercely challenges the idea that Sabo is his father’s possession, and becomes more openly affectionate after Barn helps ease his anguish 132 136.
As an adult, Ace combines confidence and teasing with courtesy: he politely thanks Luffy’s crew for caring for his brother and accepts Luffy’s refusal to join Whitebeard without anger. His loyalty also makes him reckless. He pursues Blackbeard as a matter of responsibility and later abandons his escape when Akainu insults Whitebeard 202 203 204 374.
At his death, Ace resolves his lifelong doubt about whether he deserved to be born. Rather than measuring his life by fame or bloodline, he finds its value in the love of his brothers, mentor, and crew 376.
Abilities & Skills

Ace can create flames and transform his body into fire 202 372.

- Combined flame attack: Joins his flames with Jig’s to melt Aokiji’s ice bird 372.
