Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Talent Replication acquired 1 Learns that the Purple Crystal Gourd can copy talents and refine them into essence for strengthening his other gourds.
Early speed enhancement 6 The Jade Green Gourd improves his speed; he completes a running test in 18 seconds without chakra while holding back.
Shadow Clone and Shuriken Shadow Clone techniques 7 Reportedly learns chakra molding and Shadow Clone overnight; demonstrates precise shuriken manipulation and three simultaneous target strikes.
Chakra approaches Chunin level 19 A month of training raises his reserves from Genin level to nearly Chunin level. His running speed reaches elite-Chunin level, and his hand-seal speed exceeds Chunin level.
Elite-Chunin physique and chakra reserves 19 Dark Yellow and Indigo Gourd enhancements raise his physical and chakra capacity. Further enhancements let him lift approximately 150 kilograms with one hand and detect an observer about twenty meters away.
Guy-level taijutsu knowledge; Perfect Eight Gates Released Formation 22 Replicates Might Guy’s talent. His perfected Eight Gates are stronger and harder to train than Guy’s version; the Gate of Death remains severely damaging but is not inherently fatal to him.
Four-seal reduction 28 Casts Water Dragon Bullet with four fewer hand seals without reducing its power.
Official Genin 37 38 Receives special permission to graduate without an examination after only a month at the Academy.
Flying Thunder God and forbidden-technique knowledge 45 Memorizes Multiple Shadow Clone, Flying Thunder God, and Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags from the Scroll of Seals. Uses Flying Thunder God twice to save Iruka and once to kill Mizuki, exhausting his chakra.
Increased chakra capacity 51 Two drops of talent original liquid strengthen his body and mind, slightly widen his chakra pathways, and increase his total capacity.
Chakra compression and advanced elemental ninjutsu 52 Learns Rain Cutter and Underworld Swamp on his first attempts. Compresses chakra enough to increase ninjutsu power by approximately ten percent.
Elite-Chunin taijutsu; six-seal reduction 52 53 Twenty days with Kakashi and Hiruzen improve his Tai Chi-based combat and chakra shaping. Kakashi estimates his taijutsu at elite-Chunin level; he can remove six seals from learned techniques without weakening them.
One-hundred-meter sensing range 53 Further gourd enhancements expand his sensing range and improve its detail.
Top-tier Wind Release affinity 55 Replicates Naruto’s talent and confirms the new affinity with chakra paper; its refinement takes ten days.
Four Gates accessible 56 Secret testing outside Konoha establishes that he can open four Gates even without dedicated Eight Gates training.
Top-tier genjutsu talent and Kurama kekkei genkai 56 Replicates Kurama Yakumo. His copied bloodline is more stable than hers, does not produce her inner demon, and strengthens with his mental power.
Chakra shape transformation mastered 59 Reports mastery to Kakashi while developing the Rasengan and considering elemental combinations.
Perfect Sage Body and top-tier sensing talent 63 Replicates Karin, gaining vast chakra reserves, rapid healing, Mind’s Eye of the Kagura, and Adamantine Sealing Chains. His resulting strength exceeds what an ordinary jonin can oppose 70 74.
Rasenshuriken usable without its earlier bodily backlash 65 His Sage Body allows him to use Rasenshuriken safely during his confrontation with Orochimaru and rapidly replenish spent chakra.
Original Chakra Blade and Wind Release: Sky Blade 82 Develops a shaped-chakra weapon, then adds Wind Release to produce extended blades powerful enough to force Gaara to seek Shukaku’s help.
Reduced dependence on hand seals 86 Against Shukaku, performs successive large-scale Earth Release techniques by clapping his hands and calling their names.
Official Chunin; shared-vision discovery 94 Receives Chunin promotion but is denied immediate Jonin promotion. Also discovers that his developing Sage Body permits divided attention and a shared field of vision.
Perfect Mount Myōboku Sage Mode 115 116 Learns senjutsu after repeated attempts at energy balance. Stores senjutsu chakra in his sealing chains, enabling instant activation and a roughly tenfold boost to taijutsu, ninjutsu, and genjutsu.
Confirmed Kage-level strength 134 139 Kakashi recognizes him as firmly Kage-level. Mei judges his normal combat strength approximately equal to hers, with his Eight Gates making him far more dangerous.
Seventh Gate combined with Wind Release Chakra Mode 149 Releases chakra comparable in presence to a tailed beast while defending Gaara in Sunagakure.
Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode 169 170 Qualifies through a massive Katsuyu summoning and quickly learns the mode, whose primary advantage is exceptional recovery. His first attempt to merge it with Mount Myōboku’s mode fails.
Perfect Byakugan and Alternate Dimension 176 Replication from Hinata provides blind-spot-free vision, perception beyond a kilometer, oppressive pressure, and dimensional transport. Its initial transport ability does not let attacks pass harmlessly through him.
Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode 179 Masters his third Sage Mode. Unlike the toad method, it permits continuing chakra refinement during combat.
Azure Dragon Mode 180 Shukaku’s Yin–Yang chakra stabilizes the fusion of all three Sage Modes. Strength and speed rise nearly a hundredfold, but the form consumes senjutsu chakra at three times the rate of the individual modes.
Susanoo demonstrated 220 Uses Susanoo against Genji’s forces in Kirigakure; their combined ninjutsu leaves him unharmed.
Two-tomoe Sharingan enhancement 243 Reviews his eyes’ ability to amplify ninjutsu and plans to combine it with Sage Mode and Wood Release.
Perfect Wood Release 245 Uses sixty drops of talent original liquid to fuse Earth and Water Release. Tests Deep Forest Emergence, Wood Dragon, Wood Human, and True Several Thousand Hands.
Top-tier Fire Release affinity 245 Replicates Konohamaru and immediately demonstrates an oversized Great Fireball.
Motionless, silent ninjutsu casting 246 Successfully performs more than a dozen techniques while standing still and mentally reciting their names.
Three-tomoe Sharingan; third-stage Susanoo 248 250 His eyes amplify ninjutsu fivefold. His armored Susanoo can wield a giant sword and perform ninjutsu, with attacks comparable to a Tailed Beast Bomb.
All five basic elemental natures 248 Replicates Sasuke and obtains top-tier Lightning Release affinity, completing his collection of the five basic nature transformations.
Four-tomoe Sharingan and Perfect Susanoo 276 Replicates Obito’s Sharingan. Gains a towering Perfect Susanoo, Futsunomitama, and combined offensive Kamui and defensive phasing.
Mangekyō Sharingan 327 Replicates Edo Madara. His eyes develop a six-tomoe spiral pattern, with Yachihoko in the left eye and a space ability in the right. The latter removes his earlier inability to attack while phased.
Six Paths level 333 Restores Nagato’s longstanding injuries and separates all nine tailed beasts from Madara. His Purple-Gold Gourd loses its replication cooldown.
Rinnegan and Isshiki-like right eye 334 Displays a Rinnegan in his left eye and an asterisk-patterned eye matching Isshiki’s in his right, alongside a horned transformation. The passage does not describe the exact acquisition process.

Background / History

Kirigakure origins

An examination of Zhou Cheng’s memories identifies him as the sole surviving child of Kirigakure civilian shinobi: a Chunin father and a Genin mother, both killed during the village’s civil war. The investigators find no evidence that he is a spy 16.

Later Kirigakure accounts contradict this modest family history. A Mist shinobi associates his appearance with a powerful man from a destroyed clan, and Genji describes his father as a Water and Earth Release user who could cast ninjutsu without movement, speech, or hand seals. Zhou Cheng repeatedly notices that these accounts do not match his memories 131 138 214.

Victor later claims that Zhou Cheng inherited his father’s gift and developed it further, citing his ability to copy kekkei genkai. Victor nevertheless admits that the father’s origins and the workings of his ability remain unknown 316.

Academy prodigy

Soon after arriving in Konoha, Zhou Cheng attracts attention through his running and shuriken tests. His combination of deliberate misdirection, precision, and newly learned ninjutsu interests Hiruzen, Danzo, and ANBU before he has even graduated 6 7.

He spends the following month training with Haku while a Shadow Clone attends the Academy. He supplements practice with gourd enhancements, learns Water and Earth Release techniques supplied by village leaders, and secretly copies Guy’s taijutsu knowledge. Despite their interest in cultivating him, Konoha continues monitoring both him and Haku 19 22.

His victory over Neji establishes his reputation. Rather than winning through direct physical superiority, he exhausts Neji’s chakra with layered attacks, covers the arena in water, and finishes with Great Waterfall. Afterward, he offers friendship and joint training instead of humiliating his defeated opponent 28 29 31.

Graduation and competing mentors

Zhou Cheng seeks early graduation to take missions, develop his abilities, and gain distance from Hiruzen’s scrutiny. He also asks Kakashi to accept him as a disciple, having previously declined offers from both Guy and Hiruzen. His Academy graduation is approved without an examination 22 32 37 38.

He passes Kakashi’s bell test through clone-based misdirection. During the Scroll of Seals incident, he protects Naruto, saves Iruka, kills Mizuki with Flying Thunder God, and secretly memorizes forbidden techniques. Hiruzen uses that unauthorized study as leverage to become his second teacher; Zhou Cheng accepts outwardly while retaining his distrust 42 45 47.

Chunin Exams and the Sage Body

Under Kurenai’s Team 8, Zhou Cheng gains opportunities to train outside the village and study genjutsu. Replicating Yakumo gives him the Kurama bloodline; replicating Karin during the Forest of Death grants the Perfect Sage Body that transforms his chakra capacity, healing, and combat strength 55 56 57 63.

He helps Team 7 obtain its required scrolls, protects Karin, and takes enough scrolls from rival teams to influence the exam’s village-wide outcome. Against Orochimaru, he tests his new abilities while deliberately avoiding a kill because he wants to exploit the coming Konoha Crush for prestige and political leverage 63 65 70.

His growing strength alarms Hiruzen and Danzo. Their attempts to cultivate him shift toward coercion, including an order to spend a year in Root. Zhou Cheng refuses, insisting that Konoha is his home while objecting to being treated as an outsider 75 76.

Village defender and political challenger

Zhou Cheng confronts Gaara and Shukaku during the exams, then earns civilian support by using Shadow Clones to help rebuild Konoha. His official Chunin promotion does not satisfy him: the refusal of immediate Jonin promotion triggers a public dispute over whether procedural rules should outweigh his demonstrated strength 82 86 94.

When Yakumo’s clan hands her to Root as a political offering, Zhou Cheng becomes her protector and attacks those responsible. He also supports Sasuke’s decision to seek training with Orochimaru while arranging secret contact, preserving their public appearance of opposition 97 99 102.

His victories against forces from three major villages bring heroic recognition, financial rewards, and unwanted diplomatic duties. Kirigakure attempts to recruit him through his ancestry, while he maintains that Konoha—not the village associated with his family’s destruction—gave him a home 131 138 139.

The three Sage Lands

At Mount Myōboku, Gamamaru prophesies that a black-haired boy will inherit the Six Paths legacy, command the Nine Beasts, and protect the world and the three Sage Lands. Zhou Cheng wonders whether the prophecy refers to him; Fukasaku and Shima increasingly regard him as the Child of Prophecy after witnessing his senjutsu aptitude 114 115 116.

He masters Mount Myōboku’s Sage Mode but remains dissatisfied with its ceiling. Following Gamamaru’s advice, he learns Shikkotsu Forest’s method through Tsunade and obtains access to Ryūchi Cave by threatening Orochimaru’s research. His eventual fusion of the three traditions produces Azure Dragon Mode 116 169 170 177 178 180.

International influence and Akatsuki opposition

Zhou Cheng’s protection of the One-Tail, Three-Tails, and Nine-Tails jinchūriki makes him a central obstacle to Akatsuki. After Obito reports his defeat and Hidan’s capture, Nagato launches a dedicated Zhou Cheng Hunting Plan alongside the Tailed Beast Capture Plan 243.

Meanwhile, Zhou Cheng strengthens Konoha through training camps and Chakra Cloak technology. Major clans support his candidacy for Hokage because their heirs are his friends or students, but he repeatedly rejects the office and resists efforts to decide his future without consulting him 174 202 215 244 298.

He supports Mei’s rise in Kirigakure and persuades Isobu to accompany him by recognizing the tailed beast’s right to choose. His disputes with Iwagakure become increasingly destructive, including exposing an assassination plot at its Chunin Exams and confronting Ōnoki with overwhelming force 220 258 276.

Six Paths advancement

After acquiring Perfect Wood Release, increasingly powerful Sharingan forms, and refined space-time abilities, Zhou Cheng continues pursuing strength beyond ordinary Kage. His four-tomoe Sharingan evolves into a unique Mangekyō after he replicates Edo Madara 245 276 327.

At Six Paths level, he heals Nagato, removes the nine tailed beasts from Madara, and stores the remaining Demonic Statue in his Alternate Dimension. He subsequently confronts Isshiki with an eye matching Isshiki’s own and rejects an offer to cooperate in obtaining Chakra Fruits; Kaguya appears beside him during the confrontation 333 334.

Appearance

  • Black hair: Repeatedly described as a black-haired youth 139 140.
  • Handsome features: Konohamaru, Ino, and Karin explicitly regard him as handsome 37 140.
  • Mount Myōboku Sage Mode: Pigmentation appears around his eyes, and his pupils become toad-like, without broader toad transformation 116.
  • Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode: Facial markings include a small circle with a dot between his eyebrows; they resemble, but do not exactly match, Hashirama’s markings 170.
  • Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode: Pale skin, longer hair, snake-like eyes, and a pair of horns 179.
  • Azure Dragon Mode: An azure cloak of horned chakra snakes surrounds him 180.
  • Mangekyō Sharingan: A spiral design containing six tomoe 327.
  • Later transformation: Horns, a left Rinnegan, and an asterisk-patterned right eye 334.

Personality

Zhou Cheng is disciplined and methodical. He trains daily, distributes scarce enhancement resources according to his weaknesses, and favors balanced development over reliance on one outstanding attribute. Naruto compares his self-discipline to Rock Lee’s, while Zhou Cheng repeatedly acknowledges that copied knowledge still requires practice and real combat experience 19 36 58.

He combines genuine affection with calculated social awareness. Cooking, training advice, encouragement, and tactful invitations help him form close bonds and reconcile others. At the same time, he consciously cultivates a loyal power base, regards some friendships as strategically important, and initially sees Sasuke as a possible route to Orochimaru’s research 32 49 70 74 244.

His friends are his clearest emotional boundary. Usually relaxed enough to join their jokes, he becomes intimidating when their safety is threatened. He rejects the idea of harming Haku for power, refuses to exploit Mei’s vulnerability to obtain her affection, and recognizes that hostile villages may use his loved ones as leverage 53 171 174 268.

His independence grows into open defiance as his strength increases. He distrusts coercive mentorship, refuses Root service, and challenges village leaders who treat him as a controllable asset. Against enemies, his protectiveness can become ruthless violence; his confidence also produces risky choices, including deliberately provoking Shukaku and approaching Danzo before a surprise attack 47 76 82 150 220 248.

Despite his reputation, he does not equate strength with command competence. He declines leadership of Tsunade’s proposed strike force because he lacks battlefield-command experience and fears an oversight could cost lives, recommending Kakashi instead 174.

Abilities & Skills

Talent Replication

  • Copies another person’s talent through his gourd, often obtaining an exceptionally refined version rather than an exact equivalent 22 45 56.
  • Acquires affinities, combat knowledge, kekkei genkai, and ocular abilities; documented targets include Guy, Naruto, Yakumo, Karin, Hinata, Sasuke, Obito, and Madara 22 55 56 63 176 248 276 327.
  • Refines copied talents into talent original liquid, which can enhance attributes or support elemental fusion 1 19 245.
  • Before Six Paths advancement, refinement periods restrict when he can replicate again; documented periods vary with the talent 1 55 74 272.
  • Does not guarantee his desired reward: Naruto yields Wind affinity rather than the Sage Body he seeks, while Sasuke yields Lightning affinity rather than Sage Eyes or Yin Release 53 55 248.
  • Loses its replication cooldown after he reaches Six Paths level 333.

Chakra Control and Ninjutsu Innovation

  • Possesses top-tier chakra control, allowing efficient casting and greater power from smaller chakra expenditure 21.
  • Simplifies hand-seal sequences without weakening techniques and later casts silently while standing motionless 28 52 246.
  • Compresses chakra to improve technique power; Kakashi warns that mistakes could damage his chakra pathways 52 53.
  • Uses chakra shape transformation to create blades rather than merely coating existing weapons 82 100.
  • Designs and teaches Chakra Mode, including elemental variants demonstrated through Earth and Wind Release 113 149 163 174.

Shadow Clones and Tactical Combat

  • Uses clones for Academy attendance, training, shopping, cooking, reconnaissance, and combat deception 19 42 45 49.
  • Multiplies training opportunities by having many clones practice the same technique or refine senjutsu chakra simultaneously 45 116.
  • Employs Shuriken Shadow Clone to turn small projectile attacks into barrages 7 28 42.
  • Exploits terrain and timing: against Neji, successive Water attacks create the battlefield conditions for Great Waterfall while exhausting Rotation 28 29 31.
  • Conceals reserves and techniques when excessive displays of talent might draw dangerous attention 30.

Taijutsu and the Eight Gates

  • Copies Guy’s technical knowledge of Konoha Whirlwind, Leaf Great Whirlwind, and other taijutsu 22.
  • Develops a personal Tai Chi-based style, treating chakra as internal energy and using yielding movements to redirect attacks 31 52.
  • Uses Tai Chi Inch Power to withstand a direct clash with Tsunade’s Monster Strength Technique 99.
  • Combines the Eight Gates with Chakra Mode for much greater speed and striking force 131 149.
  • His Perfect Eight Gates remove the Gate of Death’s inherent fatality, not its severe bodily damage 22.
  • Copied understanding does not eliminate inexperience; he seeks sparring and practical testing to make the style his own 36 53.

Perfect Sage Body and Yang Release

  • Provides enormous chakra reserves, rapid chakra replenishment, and wounds that close visibly within moments 63 65 176.
  • Makes Rasenshuriken usable without the bodily damage he previously suffered 65.
  • Supports healing of others, including exam contestants and surgical scars 74 75 170.
  • Continues developing after acquisition, revealing divided attention and shared vision 94.
  • Cannot restore Orochimaru’s hands through ordinary Yang Release because their souls were sealed by the Reaper 177.
  • At Six Paths level, heals Nagato’s chronic leg injuries and restores his body to its peak condition 333.

Sensing and Sealing

  • Mind’s Eye of the Kagura: Detects chakra across dozens of kilometers, allowing him to survey the entire Forest of Death 63.
  • Uses the same ability to speak directly into Sasuke’s mind and arrange covert contact 99.
  • Adapts his sensing to locate natural energy over a broad area during senjutsu training 115.
  • Adamantine Sealing Chains: A powerful sealing technique capable of containing tailed beasts; he keeps Shukaku within the chains 63 138.
  • Repurposes the chains as storage for senjutsu chakra, making Sage Mode duration depend on his stored supply rather than a fixed short window 116.
  • Gains an additional environmental sense through nearby plants after acquiring Wood Release 245.

Elemental Ninjutsu and Bloodlines

  • Water and Earth Release: His earliest extensively trained elemental disciplines, taught through Hiruzen, Danzo, and Kakashi 19 52 53.
  • Rain Cutter: Suppresses most non-Water techniques within an area 52.
  • Underworld Swamp: Creates a trapping mire; his full-power version spans more than a hundred meters against Shukaku 52 86.
  • Rasengan and Rasenshuriken: Forms powerful chakra attacks, including long-range Wind and Water variants and Sage-enhanced forms 65 74 116.
  • Wind Release: Sky Blade: Extends a shaped-chakra blade with swirling wind edges; its early use is limited by crude swordsmanship and heavy stamina expenditure 82.
  • Samadhi Rasenshuriken: A blazing Sage Art used to counter Ōnoki’s Dust Release 258.
  • Hōzuki Hydrification Technique: Learned from captured Kirigakure scrolls and tested as protection against physical attacks 138.
  • Perfect Wood Release: Creates forests, wooden dragons, wooden giants, and True Several Thousand Hands. His ocular enhancement and Azure Dragon Mode multiply its scale 245.
  • Possesses all five basic elemental natures after acquiring Lightning Release from Sasuke 248.

Genjutsu

  • Receives top-tier genjutsu talent and the Kurama Clan’s kekkei genkai through Yakumo 56.
  • His copied bloodline remains stable without producing Yakumo’s inner demon and grows with his mental strength 56.
  • Learns basic techniques from Kurenai and rapidly understands advanced theory 57.
  • Can inflict torture without leaving external wounds, as demonstrated during his interrogation of Homura and Koharu 186.

Dōjutsu and Susanoo

  • Perfect Byakugan: Provides a full field of vision without Neji’s blind spot, sight beyond a kilometer, perception through objects, and a pressure effect capable of depressing the ground 176.
  • Uses Byakugan perception to track Ryūchi Cave elders despite their invisibility 179.
  • Sharingan enhancement: Amplifies his ninjutsu; the documented three-tomoe form gives a fivefold increase 243 248.
  • Susanoo: Progresses from a defensive giant to an armored form capable of using his ninjutsu, then to Perfect Susanoo armed with Futsunomitama 220 248 276.
  • Perfect Susanoo carries a second sword that he cannot draw during his initial test 276.
  • Mangekyō: Grants Yachihoko in the left eye and a combined spatial ability in the right; the provided passage names Yachihoko without explaining its effects 327.
  • Later displays a Rinnegan and an Isshiki-like asterisk-patterned eye 334.

Space-Time Techniques

  • Flying Thunder God: Teleports to prepared coordinates; initially consumes enough chakra that three short-range uses exhaust him 45.
  • Leaves a marked kunai in his Sunagakure room as an emergency escape route 141.
  • Alternate Dimension: A portable space used for travel, private technique testing, avoiding crowds, imprisonment, and storing the Demonic Statue 176 196 243 245 333.
  • Its initial Byakugan-derived transport does not provide true defensive intangibility; testing it against a kunai injures him 176.
  • After replicating Obito, combines phasing with offensive Kamui, allowing both evasion and spatial attacks 276.
  • His later Mangekyō spatial ability permits attacking while phased 327.

Senjutsu

Mode Main applications Limits / distinctions
Mount Myōboku Sage Mode Approximately tenfold enhancement; exceptional natural-energy gathering and sensing 115 116. Conventional refinement requires stillness and exact energy balance, with petrification as a failure risk. His chain storage bypasses the usual short duration while reserves last 115 116 179.
Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode Exceptional recovery, alongside broad physical enhancement 170. He and the Great Slug Sage sense an unresolved flaw; its chakra initially resists fusion with the toad method 170.
Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode Enhanced speed and senjutsu use; chakra refinement can continue during combat 179 180. Remains active only while senjutsu chakra is available 179.
Azure Dragon Mode Combines the three traditions’ sensing, recovery, strength, speed, and senjutsu advantages; nearly hundredfold strength and speed increase 180. Requires three portions of the individual modes’ chakra to make one portion of fused chakra and consumes reserves rapidly 180.

Kenjutsu, Teaching, and Cooking

  • Begins formal swordsmanship instruction with Kakashi after identifying it as a major weakness 74 127 138.
  • Later spars regularly with Killer B using only taijutsu and kenjutsu. Their matches reach a draw because Zhou Cheng’s taijutsu compensates for Killer B’s superior swordsmanship 317.
  • Runs intensive training camps that simulate lethal pursuit and battlefield pressure 112 113.
  • A month-long camp teaches every participant Chakra Mode and increases each participant’s strength by at least one-third 174.
  • Teaches techniques including the Rasengan and helps Naruto master the Clone Technique required for graduation 53 163.
  • Uses elaborate meals and barbecue to build friendships, host teachers, and create opportunities for reconciliation 49 57 70.

Equipment / Weapons / Items
