Background / History
Before taking on Shen Lian, Hu Kailan had already guided numerous major entertainers to stardom. Xingkai assigns him as Shen’s liaison and manager while Shen is still under contract with Xingtu Entertainment, so their initial discussion takes place by telephone. Hu agrees to prepare work options and is pleased by Shen’s cooperative attitude 24.
Hu initially hopes that professional achievements will erase the stains on Shen’s reputation. Although he knows Shen has someone backing him, he does not initially know who that person is. Rather than the demanding client he anticipates, he finds an actor whose clear judgment and willingness to cooperate make their working relationship unexpectedly comfortable 26 125.
As Shen succeeds, Hu increasingly centers his work around him, even transferring several other artists to different managers. In the later side story, Hu has become an undisputed top agent in the industry and again manages a handful of other artists. Two have achieved major success after receiving guidance from Shen, reinforcing Shen’s importance to Hu’s roster 127 272.
Appearance
- Build: Slightly filled out when introduced 26.
- Grooming: A short, dense layer of stubble; later described with a small mustache 26 127.
- Clothing: Dresses stylishly; one later outfit consists of casual trousers and a yellow shirt 26 127.
- Expression: Looks stern when silent, with a sharp gaze 26.
Personality
Hu is pragmatic and ambitious, but willing to revise his plans when an artist proves him wrong. Shen’s confidence initially worries him because of his supposed poor acting; witnessing the Silent Words audition transforms that concern into admiration. He later abandons the idea of making Shen primarily a traffic-driving celebrity, recognizing his preference for a career built on acting ability 26 27 28 102.
His investment in Shen frequently manifests as anxiety: he worries about missed opportunities, unpredictable variety-show appearances, and the consequences of making Shen’s relationship public. Nevertheless, he does not claim authority over Shen’s personal decisions. They discuss disagreements rather than Hu simply forbidding a course of action 125 185 212.
Hu also shows discretion. When Chen Mu interrupts a work discussion with something personal to tell Shen, Hu makes an excuse to leave them alone 143.
