Background

Feng Yan grew up wealthy and doted on by his parents, with family members accustomed to cleaning up after his mistakes. He developed considerable business aptitude, apparently influenced by his father, and established his own enterprises after reaching adulthood. His holdings include restaurants, shopping malls, cinemas, and amusement parks. Although less wealthy than Feng Ze, he ranks among the rich and initially shows no interest in competing for the family fortune or status 11 83.

Before the breakdown of his relationship with Bai Ruan, Feng Yan spends much of his time traveling with him and enjoying his wealth. His seemingly carefree, affectionate behavior initially makes Tao Zhiyan question how he could be the vicious villain described in the novel 11.

Personality

Feng Yan's tenderness conceals an extreme need for obedience. He praises Bai Ruan, brings him gifts, and presents himself as indulgent, yet treats Bai's education and independence as threats to his authority. His methods of control include accusations of infidelity, breakup ultimatums, humiliation, confinement, and physical abuse. He describes himself as good-tempered while tightening his grip on Bai Ruan's jaw and threatening to lock him away 12 14 16.

His entitlement also extends to household staff. He sides with Mr. Ren when Tao Zhiyan is assaulted and later insists that Tao must obey him as his master. When Bai Ruan and Tao refuse to submit, his confidence collapses into destructive anger, anxiety, and pleading 19 21 83.

Feng Yan eventually recognizes his love for Bai Ruan and acknowledges that he is chiefly responsible for Bai's unhappiness. These realizations do not immediately change his behavior: rejection still drives him to violence and captivity. His loyalty to Feng Ze is similarly conflicted—he resents his eldest brother's intervention but does not want to disappoint him 22 24 88.

Apparent Conspiracy and the Superbrain Expo
