First Appearance Chapter 12 12

Background / History

Zhao Wuji has a reputation as the Immovable Wisdom King. Ning Rongrong recognizes him as the fighter who escaped from sixteen Spirit Hall bishops and is surprised to find him teaching at Shrek Academy 12.

Appearance

  • Apparent age: Looks to be in his fifties 12.
  • Build: Shorter than Tang San, but several times bulkier, with heavily developed muscles and large hands 12 13.
  • Martial-soul transformation: His body swells and gains roughly a meter in height, making him resemble a small giant 13.

Personality

Zhao Wuji initially treats the entrance trial with relaxed confidence, praising the applicants as “little monsters” and teasing Xiao Wu when her kick fails to move him. As their coordinated attacks expose openings, his amusement gives way to greater seriousness and increasingly powerful soul skills 12 13 14 15.

He dislikes being embarrassed: after Dai Mubai laughs at him being thrown headfirst into the ground, Zhao threatens him with a practical combat lesson the following day. Nevertheless, he honors the candidates’ successful trial, accepts Tang San’s apology and treatment, and warns the students not to touch the poisoned weapons left behind 14 16.

Abilities & Skills

Great Strength Vajra Bear

His beast martial soul supports overwhelming physical strength, a stable stance, and exceptional durability 12 13.

  • Withstands Lin Yang’s Great Dragon Fire Technique with only superficial blackening; a point-blank Great Fireball merely curls the tips of his hair 13.
  • Remains rooted in place against Xiao Wu’s attempts to overturn him and survives being thrown headfirst into the ground 13 14.
  • Limitations: Speed is his weakest point. Lin Yang and Tang San repeatedly evade his attacks, while leverage and coordinated strikes disrupt his balance 13 14 15.
  • Lin Yang’s strikes at soul-power circulation nodes briefly interrupt his power flow, though the recoil nearly numbs Lin Yang’s fingers 13.

Ground Shock Wave

Zhao strikes the ground with both fists, sending an ocher wave of energy toward the candidates 13.

  • Attacks multiple opponents through the ground.
  • The candidates avoid it by jumping; Lin Yang rescues Ning Rongrong before it reaches her 13.

First Soul Skill: Immovable Bright King Body

A golden defensive aura protects Zhao Wuji against physical attacks. Its activation also releases a forceful burst of golden light 14 15.

  • The burst knocks Zhu Zhuqing unconscious and dislocates both arms, while also throwing Xiao Wu back and injuring her 14.
  • Repels many of Tang San’s hidden weapons and withstands Lin Yang’s sustained ordinary flames 15.
  • Limitations: The defense does not prevent heat buildup. Specialized needles and a crossbow bolt penetrate it, and Amaterasu clings to its golden soul power rather than fading 15 16.

Second Soul Skill: Great Strength Vajra Palm

Zhao identifies Great Strength Vajra Palm as his second soul skill and warns the candidates that it is difficult to withstand. The trial proceeds without a clearly identified demonstration of this skill 14.

Third Soul Skill: Gravity Increase

An invisible ripple spreads across the ground, increasing gravity within its range 15.

  • Makes Tang San’s body heavy and hampers his footwork.
  • Zhao uses it to isolate Tang San, expecting Lin Yang to become trapped if he approaches to help.
  • Limitations: Lin Yang retreats beyond its range, and Tang San can still evade attacks using Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track 15.

Fourth Soul Skill: Target Lock

Zhao’s fourth soul ring leaves his body and surrounds Tang San, marking him as a target 15.

  • Keeps Zhao’s airborne approach aimed at Tang San despite the latter changing position.
  • Limitations: Tang San briefly restrains Zhao with Blue Silver Grass after he lands, creating an opportunity to retreat and counterattack 15.

Fifth Soul Skill: Crushing Pressure

His fifth, black soul ring generates immense pressure around Lin Yang and Tang San 15.

  • Bears down from every direction as though compressing both attackers.
  • Does not prevent Tang San from firing another poisoned bolt or Lin Yang from activating Amaterasu 15.

Soul-Power Shock Wave

Zhao releases a shock wave to blast away the persistent Amaterasu flames 16.

  • Removes black fire that continues burning despite increased defensive soul-power output.
  • Also throws Tang San backward; Tang San’s released Black Hammer then knocks Zhao’s own hand into his face and bloodies his nose 16.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Shrek Academy Entrance Trial

Originally expected only to supervise the fourth trial, Zhao decides to fight the five applicants personally. They must survive his attacks for one incense stick; even one remaining survivor is sufficient for the entire group to pass 12.

The candidates initially challenge him through coordinated restraints, attacks on circulation nodes, and force redirection. After they throw him headfirst into the ground, he escalates to soul skills. His first skill incapacitates Zhu Zhuqing and Xiao Wu, and he tells Ning Rongrong that she has failed 13 14.

Renewed Challenge and Admission

Tang San requests a fresh trial in which he and Lin Yang will endure another incense stick to secure admission for all five. Zhao accepts, then uses his third, fourth, and fifth skills as their combined fire, mobility, hidden weapons, and poison increasingly pressure him 14 15.

Amaterasu forces Zhao to expel the flames, while Tang San’s Black Hammer bloodies his nose. Once the incense burns out, Zhao confirms that the students have passed. He takes Oscar’s recovery sausages, allows Tang San to remove the embedded Dragon Whisker Needles, and assigns Dai Mubai to settle the newcomers in 16.

Nighttime Encounter

Later that night, Lin Yang detects Zhao’s soul-power presence outside the academy alongside two other powerful presences. Lin Yang anticipates that Zhao will experience being bullied by someone stronger, but the encounter’s outcome is not shown in the provided passage 17.

Relationships

  • Lin Yang — Entrance-trial opponent and newly admitted student. His movement reading, force redirection, and Amaterasu challenge Zhao’s strength and defenses 13 15 16.
  • Tang San — Proposes the renewed trial, wounds Zhao with hidden weapons and his Black Hammer, then apologizes and removes the Dragon Whisker Needles 14 15 16.
  • Dai Mubai — Student who brings the applicants to Zhao. Zhao threatens him with extra combat practice for laughing, then entrusts him with settling the newcomers 12 14 16.
  • Oscar — Supplies the recovery sausages Zhao eats after the examination 16.
  • Xiao Wu — Helps throw Zhao during the trial but is injured and rendered unconscious by his golden burst 14.
  • Zhu Zhuqing — Targets vulnerable areas during the trial; Zhao’s counterattack knocks her unconscious and dislocates both arms 13 14.
  • Ning Rongrong — Recognizes Zhao’s reputation and supports the attacking candidates. Zhao initially declares her unsuccessful before accepting the group’s renewed challenge 12 14.
