Appearance

Yan typically conceals himself in a black hooded robe, with his face obscured by a haze of black mist. He deliberately favors the robe for the mystery and “cool” image it creates. 205 209

  • Usually carries or manifests a jet-black Death God Scythe. 205
  • His obscured face makes him difficult to identify while operating among Outsiders. 205
  • His spirit servants are often depicted as black, shadow-like entities. 258 259

Personality

As Bai He's Demonic Incarnation, Yan acts according to his own preferences and is explicitly described as doing “whatever he wanted.” He is arrogant, provocative, and enjoys forcing opponents into submission, whether through intimidation or the direct threat of soul damage. 205 206

He is also ambitious and competitive. After obtaining Spirit Binding to Dispatch a General, he refused to remain content with his assigned task and began developing a personal method—the Nine Nether Hell Prison Art—to surpass the limits of his existing abilities. 214

Despite his cruelty and threatening manner, Yan generally follows Bai He's order not to kill indiscriminately. He temporarily disables targets by severing their souls from their bodies rather than taking their souls outright. 205 449

Abilities & Skills

Soul Hooking and Soul Snatching

Yan's defining ability allows him to interfere directly with souls. He can sever a soul's connection to the body, extract spirits from possessed targets, and retain captured souls within his Death God Scythe. 205 207

  • Temporarily severs the soul-body connection, causing affected limbs or bodies to lose function without necessarily killing the victim. 205 206
  • Removes possessing spirits from a host, nullifying the strength gained through Spirit Possession. 207 233
  • Can use the Spirit Grasping Hand to forcefully search memories, though Bai He forbids full-force use because it would reduce the victim to an idiot. 449
  • Initially lacked a means to control the souls he captured, motivating his pursuit of the Feng family's inherited technique. 205

Death God Scythe

Yan can conjure a black Death God Scythe from nothing. Its attacks target spiritual connections and are particularly dangerous against spirit-based abilities. 205 207

  • Cuts through physical attacks such as compressed-air projectiles and Zhuge Qing's invisible Wind Ropes. 206 222
  • Can pass through an opponent's grasp and remove possessed spirits without physically bisecting the target. 233
  • Gives Yan a decisive advantage against users of Spirit Possession and related techniques. 207 233

Spirit Binding and Undead Forces

After negotiating with Feng Zhenghao, Yan obtained an incomplete Spirit Binding to Dispatch a General. He used it as the foundation for his own spirit-commanding methods. 208 214

  • Commands an Undead Raven Swarm composed of nearly one hundred bound raven spirits. 209
  • Transformed the Quanzhen Sect Four Madmen into spirits under his command. 258
  • Commands Balun Grylls as another bound spirit and dispatched him alongside the Four Madmen on an overseas mission. 259
  • Knows the thoughts of spirits bound through his Spirit Binding. 259
  • Can use Netherworld Power to create stronger bodies for his spirit servants. 259

Netherworld Power and Nine Nether Hell Prison Art

Yan's Yin-aligned Netherworld Power manifests as black mist or a viscous black substance. He developed the Nine Nether Hell Prison Art to expand this power into a death domain. 214 223

  • Pollutes and devours Qi, making it effective against formations and energy-based techniques. 223
  • Devoured Zhuge Qing's Qimen Formation and forced him into direct combat. 223
  • Can disperse incoming lightning-like attacks autonomously when Yan is struck. 223
  • Was envisioned as a domain through which Yan could deploy Soul Hooking and Soul Snatching over a wider area. 214

Combat Techniques

Yan supplements his soul abilities with mobility and close-combat techniques drawn from Bai He's inherited skills.

  • Used Dragon Grasping Hand to redirect Xiao Xiao's Snorting Qi back at him. 219
  • Defeated Xiao Xiao by shaking his spirit from his body with a palm strike while deliberately withholding his stronger abilities. 219 220
  • Uses extreme speed and afterimages to close distance before opponents can react. 206 233

Equipment

  • Death God ScytheYan's manifested black scythe and primary conduit for Soul Hooking and Soul Snatching. 205 233
  • Black robe — Conceals Yan's face in black mist and serves as his preferred intimidating appearance. 205 209

History

Under Heaven Society incident

Yan first entered the Under Heaven Society to obtain the Feng family's Spirit Binding to Dispatch a General. He rejected normal protocol, disabled security guards and several high-ranking Outsiders, then forced a meeting with Feng Zhenghao. 205 206

Feng Zhenghao attempted to resist by inviting numerous spirits to possess his body. Yan countered by extracting those spirits, proving that his ability directly restrained Feng Zhenghao's fighting style. Rather than seize the family technique by force, Yan offered a spirit-cultivation method in exchange. 207

The resulting agreement gave Yan an incomplete Spirit Binding to Dispatch a General and led Feng Zhenghao to try binding him to the family through Feng Shayan. Yan accepted the arrangement for personal benefit rather than attachment to the Under Heaven Society. 208

Luo Tian Grand Ritual and Immortal Palace reveal

Yan accompanied Feng Shayan and Feng Xingtong to Dragon Tiger Mountain for the Luo Tian Grand Ritual. He defeated Xiao Xiao in his first match and later overcame Zhuge Qing by using Netherworld Power to consume Zhuge Qing's Qimen Formation. 219 223

During the Ten Elders' meeting, Yan revealed that he had always belonged to the Immortal Palace. He joined Azure and Yuan Jin Gang in the group's operation against the Outsider world's leadership, warning Feng Zhenghao that the Under Heaven Society would be spared so long as he cooperated. 233

Yan later fought Wang Ai, whose Spirit Possession enhanced his physical strength. Yan's Death God Scythe bypassed Wang Ai's attempts to seize it and stripped away the spirits sustaining him. 233

Demon investigation and spirit forces

Yan investigated demon activity around Huang Village, personally tracking the demons' landing site through their oversized clawed footprints. 254 255

He subsequently deployed the Four Madmen and Balun Grylls against the North American Skeleton Party and its demon-backed leadership. To support the mission, Yan created stronger bodies for the group with Netherworld Power. 258 259

Later service to Bai He

Yan continued acting as Bai He's agent. During the conflict involving Xin Yue Kui, Bai He specifically restricted Yan from using the Spirit Grasping Hand at full power. 449

When Aini Xide needed protection during interworld training, Bai He summoned Yan as a dedicated guardian, describing his strength as not inferior to Angel Yan's. 559
