Background / History

Original Fulgrim and the Heresy

Before his fall, Fulgrim was the Emperor’s “perfect creation” and Primarch of the Third Legion. His earlier ideals included working to feed the people of Chemos and pursuing perfection after meeting the Emperor 128 167.

Fulgrim later became one of the masterminds behind the betrayal at Isstvan. His betrayal was especially devastating to Ferrus Manus, once his closest brother. During the loyalist retreat from Isstvan V, Liu Zhipeng witnessed Fulgrim approach Ferrus with an ornate, daemoniacally radiant longsword for their final duel 86 95.

Creation and Rescue of the Loyal Clone

Fabius Bile’s previous Fulgrim clones had become rabid beasts or depraved followers of Slaanesh. The successful clone retained Fulgrim’s pre-fall wisdom, charisma, and leadership potential, but awakened as a helpless infant in the ruined laboratory on Harmony 128 129.

Liu Zhipeng, inhabiting a Horus clone in his sixth life, found him in an incubation pod. Fulgrim initially recognized Horus as the brother responsible for past tragedies and reacted with fear, anger, and psychic crying. Liu’s Primordial Fire calmed him with an aura of hope and resilience 128.

Liu refused to surrender Fulgrim to Trazyn as a collectible. Calling him his brother and insisting that he was not the Horus Fulgrim remembered, he fashioned a canvas diaper and carrier and began their escape 129.

Fulgrim’s presence stirred old loyalties among the Emperor’s Children. He comforted the corrupted warrior Mace, whose final act supplied the means to reach a Stormbird. A surviving Noise Marine also surrendered upon recognizing him as his returned father 133 135.

Fabius briefly felt the same pull toward his gene-father, but rejected redemption and attacked the infant. Horus protected Fulgrim and killed Fabius. Fulgrim’s genetic template then unlocked the Stormbird, allowing them to escape Harmony 135 136 137.

Solemnace and Life on Zelanis

Trazyn received Horus and Fulgrim as prospective masterpieces for his Eternal Gallery. Fulgrim’s memories resurfaced violently when Horus donned replicas of the Warmaster’s armour: the familiar silhouette provoked a psychic scream that shook the hall. Seeing Horus’s uncovered face finally interrupted his panic 142 143 144.

During their escape, Letorion recognized the infant as his gene-father. Imperial warriors initially distrusted Horus’s claim that both Primarchs were loyal, but a supernatural command to “Follow him” abruptly ended the confrontation. The group escaped Solemnace before their frigate was caught in the newly forming Great Rift 148 152.

Fulgrim grew up under Horus’s protection on Zelanis, with Custodians guarding him. Although intellectually precocious, he suffered intrusive memories of violence, depravity, and betrayal belonging to another version of himself. Horus reassured him that those memories did not determine his identity 163.

Lord Regent and the Battle of Oya 4

Before leaving with Expedition Dawn, Horus appointed fifteen-year-old Fulgrim Lord Regent over his empire. Fulgrim openly acknowledged his inexperience but explained that his visions had taught him to hate war and value the protection of ordinary people. His declaration won the council’s allegiance, including that of the initially skeptical Alcato 164.

Three days into his rule, Fulgrim was already exhausted by tariffs, Hive City disputes, and complaints involving the Mechanicus. A psychic assault interrupted those frustrations: his daemonic counterpart had invaded Oya IV with the Choir of Ecstasy 165.

Fulgrim confronted the daemon alongside Letorion, the Redeemers, and four Custodians. His taunts provoked the enemy into a prepared trap using Necron Obelisks, concentrated fire, and gravitic restraints. The daemon eventually shattered the suppression system and devastated the defenders 166 167 168.

Refusing to kneel or accept the label of specimen, Fulgrim rallied the survivors and prayed through the Emperor’s ancient Aquila. The Emperor answered, empowering him to destroy the daemon’s body and banish the surviving daemons and Noise Marines into the Warp Rift 168 169.

The victory cost 3,200 Penitent Legion personnel, 200,000 militia, and 60% of the defenders’ vehicles. Fulgrim shared credit with his wounded followers rather than claiming sole glory. Across his worlds, the Emperor’s Children’s name was rehabilitated, and they became known as the Sons of the Phoenix 169.

Warmaster of Imperium Nihilus

Following Horus’s death, Guilliman visited Zelanis to assess the young Fulgrim. Their private, three-hour discussion included an argument but ended with Guilliman acknowledging him as a brother. Fulgrim accepted a new duty in service to Horus’s memory and the Imperium 192 193.

Guilliman subsequently secured Fulgrim’s appointment as Warmaster of Imperium Nihilus, responsible for its defence and counteroffensives. To overcome the High Lords’ objections to a teenage clone of a traitor Primarch, Guilliman deliberately claimed that the Emperor had endorsed the appointment 193.

Later Appearance of Daemon Fulgrim

The daemonic Fulgrim later confronted Liu Zhipeng in another life, taking an interest in the distinctive flavour of his soul. He fought alongside Syll’Esske and gloated over Liu’s weakening condition 207 208.

Liu exploited Skarbrand’s hatred of Slaanesh to turn the encounter against Fulgrim. He kicked Fulgrim into Skarbrand’s axe, then pinned one of his arms to the ground with End of Lament. The supplied account does not establish Fulgrim’s final fate after this attack 209.

Appearance

Loyal Fulgrim

  • Silver-white hair and violet eyes distinguish him from infancy onward; his later long hair is compared to liquid mercury 128 193.
  • Exceptionally beautiful features: described as a silver-haired youth of inhuman beauty, with an almost perfect face 163 193.
  • Rapid physical growth: reaches nearly two and a half metres by fifteen, though he has not attained his full stature when Guilliman meets him 163 193.
  • Purple-and-gold Power Armour: finely crafted and worn without a helmet during his meeting with Guilliman 193.

Daemon Fulgrim

  • Ten-metre-tall serpentine body with four arms, each carrying a daemonic sword 166.
  • Pearlescent skin and scales that seem to reflect the anguished faces of victims 166.
  • Violet serpentine eyes and a forked tongue accompany his half-human, half-serpent form 207.

Personality

Loyal Clone

Fulgrim initially retains the dignity and pride of an adult Primarch while being trapped in an infant’s body. He resents diapers, restraints, teasing, and rough handling, protesting through furious glares, kicking, and headbutts. Nevertheless, he understands danger and becomes silent when Fabius’s followers approach 129 130.

His compassion appears before he can speak: he comforts Mace and reaches toward Fabius despite the latter’s cruelty. As an adolescent, disturbing memories leave him intensely wary of power, desire, and corruption. Rather than pursuing inherited perfection, he chooses responsibility toward the people of Zelanis 133 135 163 168.

Fulgrim is candid about his limitations and credits others for shared achievements. After defeating his counterpart, pain and irreverent humour quickly replace his briefly saintlike bearing; he tells Letorion, “We did it” 164 169.

Daemon Counterpart

Daemon Fulgrim is vain, theatrical, cruel, and obsessed with his own perfection. He treats slaughter as entertainment and regards the loyal clone’s purity as revolting. Insults to his appearance or swordsmanship can provoke uncontrolled rage, while disfigurement humiliates him more deeply than physical pain 166 167 209.

Abilities & Skills

Primarch Physiology and Intellect

  • Possesses remarkable strength even as an infant; gripping Horus’s scalp and biting his back can hurt him 129 132.
  • Retains adult awareness while initially unable to communicate through normal speech 128 129.
  • Develops exceptional linguistic, philosophical, and tactical abilities during childhood 163.

Psychic Power

  • Emotional distress can produce psychic screams powerful enough to shake an exhibition hall 128 143.
  • Recognizes his daemonic counterpart’s invading psychic influence; his own reaction shatters the chair behind him 165.
  • Sends a soul-borne prayer across the galaxy through the ancient Aquila, reaching the Emperor on the Golden Throne 168.

Leadership and Governance

  • Wins the allegiance of experienced commanders by admitting his inexperience and defining a protective role for himself 164.
  • Directs survivors under daemonic psychic pressure, ordering them to focus on him rather than the enemy’s eyes or voice 168.
  • Receives authority over Horus’s empire and later responsibility for Imperium Nihilus’s military defence 164 193.

Emperor’s Empowerment

  • Receives pure psychic power imbued with order, rather than corrosive Warp energy 169.
  • Transforms Dawnbringer into a vastly enlarged sword of golden light 169.
  • Burns the daemon’s soul and destroys its manifested body, forcing it back into the Warp 169.
  • Suffers pain, exhaustion, and injuries after the victory; continued access to this power is not established 169.

Daemonic Combat and Warp Influence

  • Redirects incoming gauss beams and cuts down Space Marines with overwhelming speed 166.
  • Projects a seductive, oppressive presence capable of breaking soldiers’ sanity and mutating defenders 165 168.
  • Is weakened by reality-reinforcing Necron suppression fields, although he eventually breaks the Obelisk sustaining the trap 167 168.
  • Remains vulnerable to Emperor-empowered attacks and to injuries inflicted during Liu and Skarbrand’s assault 169 209.
