Background / History
Lion’s Gate Spaceport
During the fighting on Terra, Mortarion turns Lion’s Gate Spaceport into a plague fortress. His despair aura attacks loyalist morale and souls, while the corrupted Death Guard hold the fog-covered position 99.
Liu Zhipeng activates vehicle-mounted Reality Stabilizers installed by Sage Castor, dispersing the fog and suppressing Nurgle’s supernatural protections. Jaghatai Khan exploits Mortarion’s weakened state, then provokes him by questioning whether Typhus approves of their duel. Mortarion abandons his discipline in rage, allowing the Khan to strike through his breastplate. Typhus directs the Death Guard’s retreat, and the White Scars reclaim the spaceport with Blood Angels reinforcements 100.
The Lythera IX Trap
Mortarion prepares a monastery trap for Liu Zhipeng, who is operating as Horus. The monastery’s occupants have become stone statues with their souls drained away, and a Corrupt Lantern attacks Horus with traumatic visions. Mortarion confronts him with a Nurgle-tainted replica of the Anathame, intending to recreate the corruption of the original Horus rather than simply kill his opponent 171.
During their duel, Mortarion combines plague flies, spatial manipulation, and the lantern’s despair-inducing beam to land a small cut. The infection begins rotting Horus’s body and eroding his will, but Glory of Bloodshed converts its plague and despair energy into strength. Horus overwhelms Mortarion, then uses Angron’s arrival to create another opening and break Silence’s haft 172 173 174 175.
After Angron’s defeat, Mortarion returns with shattered chest armour, a broken wing, and a diminished plague aura. Horus conceals the corruption still affecting his arm and maintains psychological pressure. Invoking Nathaniel Garro’s refusal to surrender to despair, Horus breaks Mortarion’s confidence; when Mortarion attempts to flee, Horus shatters the remaining scythe and knocks him through the Prayer Hall’s dome into the Warp 176 177.
Siege of Macragge
Mortarion later attacks the Fortress of Hera alongside Ku’gath and Scabeiathrax. He kills Ultramarines with plague emitted by Silence and demands that Calgar surrender Guilliman, whose body remains within the fortress. Liu Zhipeng’s arrival interrupts the assault: his golden flames purge nearby pathogens and burn Mortarion’s soul, alarming him with their resemblance to the Emperor’s power 218 219.
The defenders nevertheless approach defeat before Guilliman’s resurrection reverses the battle. After the two Great Unclean Ones are banished, Guilliman and Liu coordinate against Mortarion. Guilliman controls his movements with precise swordwork while Liu withstands his attacks and strikes his wings and joints. The Emperor’s Sword pierces Mortarion’s chest, and Liu’s flying kick completes his banishment. Nurgle’s daemon army collapses afterward 221 222 223.
Intervention on Barbarus
The later storyline returns to the Primarchs’ youth after Liu Zhipeng suppresses the Chaos Gods’ direct influence. Nurgle selects Mortarion as a mortal proxy and develops a physically governed supervirus intended to corrupt him through disease and despair. Liu counters the gods’ strategy by placing fragments of his consciousness in mortals near their chosen Primarchs 480.
On Barbarus, Mortarion fails to reach the summit occupied by his xenos foster father, Nakare. Poison overwhelms even his endurance, and an elderly doctor rescues him from the lowland marsh. Mortarion initially regards being saved by a frail mortal as humiliation, then follows the doctor to a village whose inhabitants he hopes to recruit as instruments of vengeance 510 511.
Mortarion incites an uprising, but the rulers answer with a lethal Purification Rain. He condemns the dying villagers as weak and mistakes the doctor’s medicine-making for sorcery. Watching the treatment save lives forces him to reconsider. At the doctor’s command, he carries survivors to shelter; afterward, he nurses the exhausted healer and reflects on whether his treatment of ordinary people differs from Nakare’s tyranny. He asks to learn science and accepts the doctor’s strict apprenticeship 512 513 514 515.
Over the following year, Mortarion studies medicine and chemistry, manufactures effective gas masks, and trains villagers while promising to protect them. Their prepared ambush defeats Narsh’s harvesting force; a subsequent siege ends with Mortarion decapitating Lord Karag. The victory establishes the Barbarus Resistance, frees more than a thousand slaves, and provides captured laboratories and materials. Mortarion makes preservation of technical resources the resistance’s first military regulation 516 517 518 519 520.
Calas Typhon joins with 952 warriors and becomes Mortarion’s trusted commander, but secretly embraces Nurgle’s power. Mortarion rejects his proposed sorcerous shortcuts and threatens to purge him. When Typhon summons a Great Unclean One against Mortarion and the doctor, Mortarion destroys the daemon with ordinary steel and executes Typhon despite his pleas. The doctor helps him confront his grief without abandoning his principles 521 522 524 525.
After several years of technological development, Mortarion leads fifty thousand elite Death Guard against Nakare. Protective equipment, chemical incendiaries, and an energy-absorbing shield counter the tyrant’s defenses, allowing Mortarion to kill him and free Barbarus. Returning to share his victory, Mortarion finds his mentor gone, leaving only a Chemistry and Physics notebook and a farewell letter 525 526.
Appearance
- Uncorrupted form: A pale giant nearly three metres tall, with deep-set eyes and enormous hands capable of crushing steel 511 512 521.
- Barbarus equipment: A gas mask and crude, battle-scarred Power Armour 524.
- Daemonic body: Immense, bloated, and rotten; damaged armour exposes skin resembling decaying bark 172 176.
- Daemonic armour: Battered gray-white Terminator Armour, with pus and green fumes seeping through its joints 171.
- Wings and attendants: Enormous wings resembling those of a rotting dragonfly, surrounded by swarming flies 171.
- Voice and breathing: Low, hoarse speech and respirator wheezes compared to broken bellows 219.
Personality
As Nurgle’s Daemon Prince, Mortarion presents decay as the universe’s fundamental truth and submission to it as wisdom. He treats hope and loyalty as temporary nourishment for inevitable rot. Beneath this philosophical certainty, however, he remains acutely sensitive to accusations of cowardice and challenges to his authority. The Khan’s reference to Typhus and Horus’s invocation of Garro both turn his resentment into a exploitable weakness 100 172 177.
His early Barbarus self is similarly proud, suspicious, and revenge-driven. He initially values villagers as potential weapons and blames them when poison proves stronger than their bodies. The doctor’s example teaches him to distinguish unfamiliar knowledge from sorcery and strength from coercion. He becomes a patient protector and disciplined commander, accepts instruction without demanding deference, and openly grieves both Typhon’s betrayal and his mentor’s disappearance 511 513 514 515 516 519 525 526.
Abilities & Skills
Primarch Physiology
- Strength and speed: Straightens steel by hand, cuts through Stitched Beasts, and closes dozens of metres almost instantly when fighting Karag 516 518 519.
- Poison resistance: Withstands the village’s concentrated toxic mist with only minor discomfort, though Nakare’s summit poison initially overwhelms him 510 513.
- Recovery: His natural resilience works with the doctor’s medicine to bring him back from near-fatal poisoning 510.
- Uncorrupted combat power: Severs a Great Unclean One’s hand and head with an ordinary steel scythe, then overpowers Typhon’s psychic defenses 524 525.
Scythe Combat
- Efficient technique: Targets joints, interrupts spellcasting, and covers the soldiers advancing behind him 519.
- Daemonic weapon handling: Uses Silence in unnatural arcs and combines its attacks with Nurgle’s spatial manipulation 172.
- Limits under pressure: His technique deteriorates when humiliation drives him into uncontrolled rage 100.
Nurgle’s Plague and Despair
- Area influence: Spreads plague fog and psychic despair across a battlefield or enclosed domain, attacking morale as well as flesh 99 172.
- Lethal plague waves: A sweep of Silence releases an invisible ripple that rapidly corrodes Ultramarine armour and dissolves the bodies inside 219.
- Gift of Divine Corruption: A small wound introduces disease intended to torment the victim until they submit to Nurgle 172 173.
- Plague Flies: Releases fist-sized flies from his armour to swarm opponents 172.
- Spatial manipulation: Makes Silence vanish and reappear behind a target 172.
Science and Engineering
- Practical education: Studies chemistry and medicine under the old doctor 515 516.
- Manufacturing: Builds gas masks from scrap metal, beast hides, bones, and his mentor’s filtration formula 516.
- Weaponsmithing: Forges a massive scythe from salvaged armour plating and improvised structural materials 518.
- Resource management: Preserves captured machinery, refined materials, and blueprints for the resistance’s technological development 520.
Command and Tactics
- Small-unit coordination: Organizes inexperienced fighters into groups of three and directs them to attack vulnerable joints 517.
- Prepared warfare: Uses concealed tunnels, ambush positions, protective equipment, and targeted siege fire instead of relying on solitary charges 516 517 518 519.
- Protective leadership: Helps exhausted trainees and prioritizes saving soldiers over Typhon’s proposed rapid, corrupting victory 516 522.
- Large-scale command: Leads fifty thousand elite Death Guard in the final assault on Nakare 525 526.
Documented Counters
- Reality Stabilizers: Disperse his plague fog, disrupt his connection to Nurgle, and suppress the Death Guard’s unnatural resilience 100.
- Glory of Bloodshed: Lets Horus turn plague and despair into combat strength; it does not completely remove the corruption lingering in his arm 173 176.
- Golden and sacred fire: Liu’s golden flames burn Mortarion’s soul, while the Emperor’s Sword burns his daemonic essence 219 223.
- Psychological provocation: Challenges to his courage, faith, or command can destroy his composure 100 177.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Silence — His enormous war scythe. The daemonic weapon is rust-covered and drips poisonous green liquid; the scythe carried during the final Barbarus assault is also named Silence 171 172 526.
- Anathame replica — The weapon used in the Lythera IX trap is identified as a replica of the blade that corrupted Horus, tempered with Nurgle’s most potent plagues 171.
