Power Progression
The documented changes concern Chaos empowerment, reincarnation, equipment, and passive abilities rather than numbered cultivation realms.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Four-god-empowered fallen Primarch | 105 106 | The original Horus appears as a vessel of all four Chaos gods. His presence overwhelms an Order field capable of suppressing Angron and Ka’Bandha. |
| Sixth incarnation: Horus clone | 127 129 193 | Liu Zhipeng inhabits Horus’s cloned body, gaining access to Primarch strength and senses while retaining his own identity. |
| Fully equipped Warmaster | 143 | Equips Trazyn’s functional replicas of Horus’s Terminator armour, the Talon of Horus, and Worldbreaker. The armour activates through a neural interface and substantially increases his combat power. |
| Glory of Bloodshed surge | 173 | Mortarion’s plague and despair fuel an unprecedented activation of the passive. Horus’s aura, speed, and strength rise severalfold, allowing him to overwhelm the Daemon Primarch. |
| Posthumous reward: Saintly Radiance → Golden Judgment | 193 | After the sixth life ends, Liu receives Saintly Radiance. Its fusion with Glory of Bloodshed produces Golden Judgment, which strengthens reality and empowers attacks against physical and Warp entities. This reward belongs to Liu’s subsequent progression, not the living Horus clone. |
Background / History
The original Horus
Horus was once a charismatic, outgoing Warmaster. By the Siege of Terra, the four Chaos gods have transformed him into a monstrous fallen demigod. He defeats Sanguinius, breaking his wings and armour, but loses the opportunity to kill him when Liu Zhipeng deliberately provokes him and teleports Sanguinius to safety 105.
The Emperor confronts Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit. After the Emperor crushes his Power Claw and begins purging his sustaining Warp power, Horus feigns repentance and exploits his father’s hesitation to inflict a mortal wound. He then erases Ollanius Pius, an ordinary veteran attempting to defend the Emperor. The Emperor’s ensuing attack destroys Horus’s body and annihilates his soul 106 107.
Liu Zhipeng’s sixth life
Liu later inhabits a Horus clone in Fabius Bile’s ruined laboratory. Looking at his reflection, he considers using Horus’s body and reputation to accomplish what the original never did. Bile identifies this clone as H-02, a specimen he had previously considered a soulless failure 127 134.
Liu discovers an infant Fulgrim clone and decides to protect him rather than let him become Trazyn’s collectible. He adopts the identity of Horus Lupercal while imagining an unprecedented partnership: a loyal Horus and a loyal Fulgrim in the Eye of Terror during M41 128 129.
Appearance
- Primarch physique: An immense, heavily muscled body; his unarmoured form casts a ten-foot shadow, while his fully armoured height exceeds twelve feet 137 143.
- Face: Handsome and commanding, with sharp, deep eyes. The clone’s likeness is identical to the face Imperial propaganda associates with the Arch-Traitor 134 179.
- Original’s corrupted form: Pitch-black, spiked Terminator armour bearing the Eye of Horus; eyes burning with four-coloured flames; a voice resembling countless tormented souls speaking together 105 106 107.
- Clone’s early clothing: A crude canvas war skirt and an improvised baby carrier, worn while escaping Bile’s laboratory 129 132.
- Warmaster armour: Black Terminator armour with brass or gold detailing, paired with a massive Power Claw and long-handled warhammer 143 179.
- Uncorrupted presentation: At his return to the Imperial battlefield, the clone shows no visible Chaos corruption despite wearing the original’s infamous silhouette 179.
Personality
The fallen original is proud, contemptuous, and easily enraged by humiliation. Liu’s insults make him abandon a nearly defeated Sanguinius, while his final confrontation with the Emperor reveals a willingness to weaponize their father-son bond through false remorse 105 107.
The Liu-inhabited clone combines a commanding public persona with an irreverent internal voice. He approaches danger through improvisation, deception, and enthusiastically applied Warhammer knowledge. His apparent arrogance often conceals a practical calculation: hiding from Bile’s followers, bargaining with Trazyn, or masking his injuries from Mortarion 130 137 141 176.
His brutality coexists with personal compassion. He protects Fulgrim, reassures him that inherited memories do not determine his future, and regards Angron and Abaddon with pity after defeating them. He also rejects the idea that traitor gene-seed inevitably produces traitors, deliberately cultivating loyal Penitent Legions 163 176 187.
As a ruler, Horus is ambitious and pragmatic. He uses military strength, Custodian backing, and technological gifts to establish authority, but also gives reluctant followers ways to preserve their dignity. His final advice to Fulgrim is to trust capable allies without ever surrendering all doubt 155 156 164.
Abilities & Skills
Primarch Physiology and Close Combat
- Possesses superhuman hearing, strength, reflexes, and endurance; locates Fulgrim’s faint crying through rubble and clears the obstructed doorway bare-handed 127.
- Kills mutated New Men with stomps, spear thrusts, neck-breaking holds, and knee strikes; parries explosive bolts with a crude alloy spear 131.
- Throws his improvised spear faster than sound and uses fists, elbows, knees, shoulders, and headbutts alongside his weapons 134 173.
- Defeats Ugrul, Kroodaka, and Abaddon in direct combat, and destroys Angron’s material anchor 159 176 185 187.
- Limits: Mortarion’s corruption persists in his left arm after battle. A god-slaying spear bypasses his resilience and prevents his body from healing 178 189.
Temporal Wraith
- Makes him immune to Trazyn’s temporal stasis field 144.
- Allows him to remain conscious while pretending to be frozen, waiting until Trazyn leaves Solemnace before breaking out 144.
- Does not free Fulgrim from the display automatically; Horus physically breaks the crystal enclosure to begin their escape 144.
Glory of Bloodshed
- Converts the despair and plague energy of Mortarion’s assault into increased fighting power 173.
- Produces golden lightning, greatly increased speed, and a severalfold rise in his combat aura during its strongest documented activation 173.
- Limit: The battle surge does not permanently remove Nurgle’s corruption. Pain becomes more apparent once the heightened effect fades 178.
Primordial Fire
- Gives his voice an influence that transcends language 179.
- Reveals the Hive Mind’s intended consumption of its worshippers to less-transformed Genestealer cultists, turning attackers into supplicants 182.
- Overwrites the cult’s psychic links and dismantles Bishop Tyrantis Primus’s control over his congregation 182.
- Redirects approximately seventy percent of the cult into the Redeemers, who fight for redemption on the surface 183 186.
- Limit: The Crawling Patriarch and Primus remain hostile and must be killed; the conversion is not universal 182 183.
Command and Psychological Warfare
- Assigns mixed Imperial forces according to their specialties, including reconnaissance, flank protection, rapid response, and long-range support 149.
- Destroys Ugrul’s prized Gargant and leaves mocking graffiti to lure the Warboss into an ambush 158 159.
- Uses diversionary attacks and a targeted strike against Kroodaka to fracture the Vigilus Orks’ leadership 184 185.
- Turns his wounded arm into a trap against Abaddon by allowing Drach’nyen to pierce it, pinning the blade while counterattacking 187.
- Conceals lingering injuries to maintain pressure on Mortarion 176.
Technical Knowledge and Piloting
- Pilots a Stormbird through Harmony’s Warp storms and debris using Primarch reflexes despite lacking genuine piloting experience 137.
- Connects through his armour to Solemnace’s control network, gaining access to collection records, security layouts, and stasis controls 145.
- Identifies dangerous exhibits, including a Krork and a Dragon-associated C’tan Shard, and pulls a fascinated Tech-Priest away from the latter 149.
The Original’s Chaos Empowerment
- Overwhelms Liu’s anti-magic field through sheer presence and decisively overpowers Sanguinius 105.
- Wields enough Chaos power to tear reality apart and casually erases Ollanius Pius from existence 107.
- Limit: His strength is borrowed from Chaos. The Emperor crushes his claw, purges his sustaining Warp power, and ultimately annihilates him 107.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Alloy spear — Improvised from a massive laboratory support column; used against New Men and Noise Marines before Horus acquires his signature equipment 130 131 135.

- Pink Stormbird — Escape craft authorized to Fulgrim’s genetic template. It survives the flight out of the Eye of Terror but reaches realspace with only nineteen percent hull integrity 137 140.
- Unyielding Spirit — A black-and-gold Glory-class battleship serving as Expedition Dawn’s flagship 164 170.
Relationships
- Liu Zhipeng — The consciousness inhabiting the Horus clone during Liu’s sixth life; his knowledge, memories, and passives distinguish the clone from the original 129 144 193.
- The Emperor — Father and destroyer of the fallen original; protector of the loyal clone and Fulgrim during their escape. His command later compels imprisoned Imperial warriors to follow Horus 107 140 148.
- Fulgrim — Brother, protected companion, and eventual Lord Regent. Horus raises the infant clone, supports him through traumatic memories, and entrusts him with governing their empire 129 163 164.
- Sanguinius — Opponent of the fallen original, who nearly kills him before Liu intervenes 105.
- Fabius Bile — Creator of H-02 and immediate enemy during the laboratory escape. Horus kills him after Bile attempts to seize Fulgrim 134 136 137.
- Trazyn the Infinite — Collector whom Horus deceives into bringing him to Solemnace’s central exhibition. Horus escapes and exploits the collection and its systems 141 144 145 154.
- Valerian — Custodian Shield-Captain who initially intends to execute Horus, then obeys the Emperor’s command to serve him and defends him from Imperial gunfire 148 155.
- Alcato — Imperial Fists captain and trusted commander. His initial hostility develops into respect, particularly after the Penitent Legions vindicate Horus’s judgment 148 163 187.
- Letorion — Emperor’s Children captain who recognizes infant Fulgrim; Horus keeps him close during the Solemnace escape 148 149.
- Oli — Zelanis commissar who challenges Horus’s legitimacy before accepting him as Warmaster; later serves as Commissar-General 155 156 163.
- Malthus — Tech-Priest who interprets the complete STC as divine revelation and pledges the Mechanicus to Horus; later serves as Forge Marshal 156 163.
- Mortarion — Enemy who attempts to repeat Horus’s historical corruption using a Nurgle-tainted Anathame replica. His attack leaves lasting corruption in the clone’s arm 171 173 178.
- Abaddon — Successor and gene-son figure who rejects the clone as an impostor. Horus defeats and kills him; Abaddon’s final word is “Father” 186 187.
- Calgar — Imperial commander who recognizes Horus’s military value, warns him about Abaddon’s challenge, and reacts furiously to his assassination 183 186 189.
- Inquisitor Katavonus — Opponent who condemns Horus’s growing following as a personality cult and celebrates the attack that mortally wounds him 183 189.
- Celestine — Attempts to heal Horus after the Cabal assassination, but the spear’s power repels her intervention 189.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Escape from Harmony
Horus arms himself from laboratory debris and hides with Fulgrim when Fabius Bile returns. After defeating Mace and the New Men, he discovers that Fulgrim’s presence can awaken buried filial loyalty in Emperor’s Children warriors. Mace provides the means to reach a Stormbird keyed to Fulgrim’s genetic identity 130 131 132 133.
Horus kills Bile and escapes with Fulgrim. Chaos offers and threats fail to win the brothers over; Horus’s memories of the “Pleasure Mushrooms” undermine Slaanesh’s temptation. The Emperor intervenes against their pursuers and opens a Golden Way to realspace 137 138 140.
Infiltration of Solemnace
Stranded without supplies or communications, Horus negotiates his own collection by Trazyn, requesting a secure central gallery for himself and Fulgrim. He intends to exploit his stasis immunity rather than remain a specimen 141.
After acquiring the replica Warmaster equipment, Horus waits out Trazyn’s departure, shatters the case, and reaches the museum’s control network. Awakened Imperial prisoners initially attack him, but the Emperor’s command—“Follow him”—turns them into his followers. He leads them through the collection and recovers the complete STC 143 144 145 147 148 149 151.
Zelanis and the Rebuilt Legions
Horus answers Zelanis’s distress call while identifying its resources and industry as the foundation for a new base. He openly announces his return at Hope’s Grasp, wins Mechanicus allegiance with the STC, and secures Oli’s submission. His sabotage-and-ambush operation kills Ugrul and collapses the Orks’ unity 153 154 155 156 158 159.
Over fifteen years, Horus builds loyal forces from both loyalist and traitor genetic lines. His training redirects inherited tendencies toward craftsmanship, honour, and steadfast defence; rigorous screening reveals no Chaos corruption among the Penitent recruits 163.
| Asset | Documented scale after fifteen years |
|---|---|
| Territory | Over one hundred habitable and industrial worlds, centered on Zelanis 163 |
| Space Marines | More than 200,000 across eighteen Legions 163 |
| Imperialis Militia | More than fifty million troops 163 |
| Industry | Tens of thousands of arms factories producing advanced weapons 163 |
Expedition Dawn and Lythera IX
Horus names Vigilus as his next objective because of its position at the Nachmund Gauntlet, the only known stable route across the Great Rift. He appoints fifteen-year-old Fulgrim Lord Regent and departs with more than one hundred ships, intending to reconnect with Guilliman’s Indomitus Crusade 164.
On Lythera IX, Horus investigates a monastery whose occupants have been turned to stone after their souls were drained. Mortarion’s corruption trap triggers Glory of Bloodshed, allowing Horus to reverse the battle. He subsequently destroys Angron’s material anchor, but leaves the encounter badly battered and with unresolved corruption in his left arm 171 173 176 178.
Vigilus and Abaddon
Horus neutralizes the Genestealer Cult beneath Vigilus in nine minutes and thirty-seven seconds, with no losses among himself and twenty guards. He kills its leaders and redirects most of its followers into the Redeemers, relieving a major internal threat while provoking Katavonus’s concern about his spiritual authority 182 183.
He next kills Kroodaka, causing rival Ork leaders to turn on one another. With the military situation improving, Horus accepts Abaddon’s public challenge, viewing the confrontation as a chance to release the Black Legion from its past. He wins despite his wounded arm and kills Abaddon after confronting him over a life spent imitating Horus’s symbols and ambitions 184 185 186 187.
Assassination and Legacy
Horus’s companions foil an Officio Assassinorum attack, but the ensuing confrontation with Katavonus creates an opening for a hidden Cabal assassin. An Aeldari god-slaying spear pierces Horus’s heart, suppresses healing, and begins erasing his life. Horus restrains Calgar’s anger and prioritizes settling his affairs over assigning blame 188 189.
Guilliman later confirms his death to Fulgrim. Fulgrim becomes Warmaster of Imperium Nihilus, while Liu’s sixth life is judged a major success and rewarded with the abilities that form Golden Judgment 193.
Later Great Crusade-Era Appearances
In a later Great Crusade setting, Horus encounters more than one thousand technologically superior Human Liberation Union warships. Rather than risk a disastrous battle, he reports the encounter to the Emperor 547.
He subsequently recognizes Jian Ya’s disciplined military bearing and objects to the Emperor meeting the Union’s hidden representative without an escort. The Emperor refuses his offer of Luna Wolves protection; Horus remains outside the meeting in which Liu reveals himself 548 549.
