Background / History
Original timeline
The Emperor first appears to Liu Zhipeng as a towering golden figure in an otherwise ordinary alley. He asks what Liu thinks he looks like; Liu recognizes him but blurts out “huge yellow rat.” The Emperor does not visibly become angry. His gaze seems to expose Liu’s entire existence, and Liu loses consciousness before awakening as a Nurgling 1.
During the Siege of Terra, Liu reaches the Golden Throne while disguised as Tech-Sage Castor and delivers a voice synthesizer. The Emperor sees through the disguise and acknowledges Liu’s hidden contributions, including the repaired Eternal Wall, the battlefield-wide Order field, and Sanguinius’s rescue. With Malcador taking his place on the Throne, he departs for the Vengeful Spirit to confront Horus 106.
The Emperor initially overpowers Horus, crushing his Power Claw and purging his Chaos-derived strength with golden sword-fire. Horus feigns repentance, exploiting his father’s affection to inflict a mortal wound. When the veteran Ollanius Pius attempts to defend the Emperor and is erased by Horus, the Emperor’s grief becomes fury: his final blast destroys Horus’s body and annihilates his soul 107.
Rogal Dorn carries the dying Emperor back to the Palace. The Emperor honors Malcador’s sacrifice and orders Dorn to connect him to the Golden Throne. Although physically broken, he retains command, speaking from the Throne to order Sanguinius and the Khan to purge Terra and avenge the loyal dead 108.
Across the later era, the Emperor intervenes on behalf of Liu’s Horus incarnation and the young Fulgrim. His authority forces hostile Imperial warriors to follow Horus, while his recognition of Fulgrim’s selfless prayer leads to the boy’s victory over Daemon Fulgrim 148 168 169.
When the Four Chaos Gods directly attack Liu, the Emperor fully awakens and expends his remaining strength on a golden shield. The intervention gives Liu’s Primordial Quickening the opportunity and energy needed to mature. In their subsequent mental meeting, the Emperor admits that the alley encounter was deliberate 465 466.
He then reveals that Liu originated from humanity he had separated from his own essence. That humanity was only a “seed”: Liu is an independent person, not his clone, fragment, or tool. The eleven reincarnated lives allowed that seed to develop through hardship and personal choices 467.
The Emperor asks Liu to direct his unstable combined powers through time and create a new timeline before the Unification Wars and Horus’s fall. He openly acknowledges that the existing timeline—including himself—will be erased. As he fades, he entrusts Liu with his faith in ordinary humanity and the hope of a future that no longer requires a savior 467 468.
Rewritten timeline
In twenty-second-century Earth, the Emperor lives inconspicuously as a café server while observing humanity. Liu’s outwardly ordinary appearance conceals a soul so vast that even the Emperor cannot comprehend it. Before leaving, Liu tosses him a USB drive as a “tip,” making clear that he knows the server’s identity 470 471.
The drive contains the first key to perfect Astartes genetic engineering. It remains in the Emperor’s laboratory when he emerges from concealment to unite Terra, changing the technological circumstances that had forced his original counterpart to rely on defective Thunder Warriors 476 549.
During the Great Crusade, Jian Ya offers the Imperium five hundred prosperous worlds, advanced STC blueprints, gene-repair technology, and a Dimensional Engine capable of faster-than-light travel without entering the Warp. The Emperor recognizes the engine’s strategic value and insists on meeting its hidden creator 548.
A private meeting reveals Liu, whom the Emperor recognizes from the café encounter. Liu proposes that they become brothers and share humanity’s burden: the Emperor will build and govern civilization, while Liu will embody hope and confront its enemies. After learning of the approaching Tyranids, the Emperor accepts a division of responsibilities in which he rebuilds humanity while Liu contains Chaos and handles relations with useful xenos 549 550.
By the era of the Grand Unified Alliance, official history credits the Emperor with humanity’s resurgence and the unification of the galaxy’s major intelligent species. Liu deliberately leaves himself out of that history and continues referring to the Emperor informally as “Big’un” 570 571.
Appearance
The Emperor’s presentation ranges from an overwhelming golden sovereign to an apparently ordinary middle-aged man 1 466 470.
- Radiant manifestation: An enormous human silhouette surrounded by star-like golden light; his features are obscured, and his presence makes Liu struggle to breathe 1.
- Wartime appearance: Golden power armour and eyes burning with golden fire 106 107 548.
- Final mental meeting: Appears about forty, tall, with short black hair, a beard, and a simple white robe. His face shows exhaustion, sorrow, acceptance, and guilt 466.
- Café disguise: A tall, broad-framed man with black hair and beard, wearing a plain dark vest and quietly polishing glasses 470.
Personality
The Emperor maintains formidable composure, but affection can break through his cold resolve. He mourns Malcador, hesitates when Horus appears remorseful, and shows tenderness toward Dorn despite his own mortal wounds. Horus exploits that surviving humanity, while Ollanius Pius’s sacrifice awakens the grief and fury that end their confrontation 106 107 108.
He is deeply opposed to becoming an object of worship. After ten thousand years on the Throne, he recognizes that denying his divinity only intensifies religious fanaticism and that attempts to encourage independent thought become scripture. His final plan reflects both guilt over his failures and a renewed belief that ordinary people should not be judged by a god’s impossible standards 467 468.
The rewritten Emperor remains pragmatic rather than trusting blindly. Liu’s offer of brotherhood touches his loneliness, but he still demands to know Liu’s intentions. He accepts cooperation only after considering the technology offered, the wider threats, and their complementary responsibilities 549 550.
Abilities & Skills
Psychic Perception
The Emperor possesses extraordinarily acute perception, able to examine souls and detect hidden influences 1 470 548.
- Seemingly sees Liu’s soul, past, and entire identity during their first encounter 1.
- Recognizes Liu’s concealed interventions during the Siege without accepting his Tech-Sage disguise 106.
- Scans Jian Ya’s fleet and finds neither Chaos corruption nor xenos malice 548.
- Limit: Cannot fully understand the universe-like depth concealed within Liu’s soul in the rewritten timeline 470 471.
Golden Psychic Fire and Combat
His golden power can purge Warp manifestations and destroy an enemy beyond bodily death 106 107.
- Shatters the Warp apparitions surrounding him aboard the corrupted Vengeful Spirit 106.
- Catches Horus’s attack and crushes his Power Claw 107.
- Burns away the Chaos power sustaining Horus with his sword 107.
- Annihilates both Horus’s body and soul with a final golden blast 107.
- Limit: Remains vulnerable to mortal injury when Horus exploits his hesitation 107 108.
Projected Will and Empowerment
The Emperor can communicate and act through his will across great distances, even while Throne-bound 148 168 169.
- Issues the wordless command “Follow him,” overriding the assembled Imperial warriors’ hostility toward Liu’s Horus incarnation 148.
- Hears young Fulgrim’s selfless appeal through an ancient Aquila and recognizes the voice of his lost child 168.
- Projects a golden-armoured vision behind Fulgrim, empowers him with ordered psychic energy, and ignites his Dawnbringer Power Sword 169.
- Sends his fully awakened will across the void to reach Liu during the Four Gods’ attack 465.
Protective Shields and Seals
His psychic works include both enduring restraints and a final defensive manifestation 408 466.
- Forges powerful psychic seals protecting the forbidden chamber containing the Void Dragon shard on Mars 408.
- Raises a golden shield against the combined attack of all Four Chaos Gods, sustained by humanity’s stories of hope, sacrifice, and defiance 466.
- Limits: Liu’s Temporal Wraith bypasses the Martian seals. The final shield nearly breaks and exhausts the Emperor’s remaining strength 408 466.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Golden power armour — Worn in battle and during formal appearances as humanity’s sovereign 107 548 549.
- Emperor’s Sword — A golden-flaming blade used against Horus; later wielded by Guilliman to unleash sacred psychic fire against Nurgle’s daemons 107 108 222 223.
- Golden Throne — Sustains the mortally wounded Emperor after the Siege and becomes the seat of his ten-thousand-year vigil 108 466.
- Voice Synthesizer — Built by Liu to convert brainwaves into speech if the Emperor becomes unable to speak; delivered through Malcador and accepted before the confrontation with Horus 97 106.
- USB drive — Liu’s café “tip,” containing crucial Astartes genetic-engineering knowledge in the rewritten timeline 471 476 549.
- Imperial Ambition — His personal flagship during the rewritten Great Crusade 548.
Relationships
- Liu Zhipeng — Originates from a seed of the Emperor’s separated humanity but develops as an independent person. The original Emperor entrusts him with changing history; the rewritten Emperor accepts him as a brother and strategic partner 467 468 549 550.
- Malcador — His dearest friend and loyal Regent. Takes his place on the Golden Throne during the final confrontation with Horus; in the rewritten timeline, remains a protective and suspicious adviser 106 108 548 549.
- Horus — His beloved son and former greatest pride. Horus’s false repentance exploits their bond before the Emperor annihilates him; the rewritten Horus instead insists on protecting his father during the meeting with Liu 106 107 549.
- Rogal Dorn — His son, who carries him back from the Vengeful Spirit and obeys the painful order to connect him to the Throne 108.

- Four Chaos Gods — His direct opponents during the final intervention to protect Liu 465 466.
Authority and Worship
- Personalized faith: As Alexander von Lawrence, Liu presents the Emperor as a caring leader and family member, interpreting sacrifice as protecting loved ones and loyalty as never abandoning comrades 17 18.
- Direct military command: Custodian Vilen states that the Emperor personally commanded him to aid Saint Saul against xenos and traitors 366.
- Fabricated endorsement: Guilliman falsely invokes the Emperor’s approval to overcome opposition to young Fulgrim’s appointment as Warmaster of Imperium Nihilus 193.
- Mistaken identity: Imperial soldiers hail Liu’s golden manifestations as the Emperor or his emissary; these scenes depict Liu, not the Emperor physically arriving 416 417 420.
- Invented mission: Liu claims the Emperor dispatched a secret team against the Necrons’ Soul Isolation Network. The mission is a cover story for his own strategy, not a documented Imperial order 425.
