Jonas felt he had really had far too much free time these past few days.
After that underground city rose to the surface, he had expected the Federation to make another major move. But once that call came in from Dragon City, the Federation acted as though nothing had happened, as though the Predecessor Civilization had never possessed Dorothy.
"Mr. Jonas, please rest easy. Until we openly break with the Federation, you won't see a single report of them coming after District 25."
"Respectfully yours, your friend Ji Yeling, chief Swordbearer of Dragon City's Swordbearers agency."
Just as Ji Yeling had said, unless he went looking for trouble himself, the Federation really couldn't come knocking.
Diplomatic disputes, broken business ties, and all sorts of other problems descended on the Federation. Jonas laughed aloud at the thought of the Predecessor Civilization being too bogged down by the affairs of humans, whom it regarded as ants, to extricate itself.
The Federation probably wouldn't come after District 25 again before Dragon City sent him a warning.
At last, he could get some proper rest.
The office door was open. Instead of her usual folder, Eiffel carried an elegant-looking tray holding a cup of invigorating coffee and several delicate little cookies.
"Mr. Jonas." Eiffel's voice was gentle and unobtrusive, quite unlike her previous businesslike manner. "Your coffee. Please enjoy."
She walked over to Jonas and lightly set the tray on his desk, taking care not to make too much noise. Noticing what seemed to be traces of fatigue around his eyes, she gently asked, "How have you been resting? Would you like me to arrange something relaxing for you? Perhaps a soothing massage or a walk would help."
?
Something was off. Very off.
Why did even Eiffel's expressions seem more animated now?
*No,
