Steven and Ash’s group met Meray in Dahara City, where Barza arrived and opened the Prison Bottle, transforming Hoopa into Hoopa Unbound. With the evil power now controlling Hoopa, Steven asked the dazed Barza to hand over the bottle.

• Steven used Hoopa’s ring to bring Ash’s group to Dahara City, where they met Meray and learned she had lost contact with her brother Barza.
• Meray recalled how doughnuts had become Hoopa’s favorite after she, Barza, and Hoopa repaired a Golden Ring of Creation statue they had broken.
• Barza arrived on Braviary with red, bloodshot eyes, and Steven noticed something was wrong as Barza opened the Prison Bottle.
• The evil shadow from the Prison Bottle engulfed Hoopa Confined and transformed it into Hoopa Unbound.
• Barza’s eyes cleared as Hoopa Unbound took on the red-eyed power, and Steven held out his hand and asked Barza for the Prison Bottle.

Steven stopped Hoopa Unbound by drawing the Shadow energy back into the Prison Bottle, and Ash caught the exhausted Hoopa. With the bottle contained but no permanent way to seal it, Steven decided to wait for Li Wei and Cynthia while the group took Hoopa for treatment.

• Barza opened the Prison Bottle while under its influence, releasing the Shadow energy and transforming Hoopa into Hoopa Unbound.
• Steven used the Prison Bottle to draw the Shadow energy out of Hoopa Unbound, while Metagross caught the bottle with Confusion and Ash caught Hoopa.
• Barza thanked Steven and explained that he had wanted to return Hoopa's power, while Steven concluded that the Prison Bottle had seized Barza's mind and changed Hoopa's personality.
• Steven kept the Prison Bottle under Metagross's control and decided to wait for Li Wei and Cynthia before choosing where to seal it.

• Li Wei and Cynthia arrived at the Pokémon Center, where Steven, Sheena, Barza, Meray, Robin, Ash, and Hoopa were pondering the Prison Bottle and its Shadow.
• Li Wei fed Hoopa and the other Pokémon, while Barza and Meray sensed that Li Wei’s Power of Overcoming surpassed their great-grandfather Ghris’s.
• Li Wei told the group that he and Cynthia had just visited the Distortion World and learned about the past from Giratina.
• Li Wei explained that Hoopa had originally been innocent and kind, and that humans had caused the Shadow’s evil nature.

The group learned how Hoopa’s fighting urges and the Shadow’s influence had led to the destruction of Dahara Town, and they planned to purify the Shadow and restore Hoopa’s full power. They chose to try purification at Dahara Tower and began gathering people to help.

• Steven explained that Dahara Town’s residents had encouraged Hoopa to fight, until negative emotions awakened the Shadow and Hoopa lost control.
• Li Wei and Steven reassured Hoopa that the Shadow’s power was part of Hoopa, though it had taken Hoopa down the wrong path.
• Robin suggested keeping the Prison Bottle sealed at Michina Temple, but Li Wei convinced him that this would only postpone the danger.

• Red, Blue, Lance, and Yellow arrived in Dahara City through Hoopa’s ring to help Li Wei.
• Li Wei warned the group not to touch the Prison Bottle and led them to Dahara Tower for the purification.
• The group placed the Prison Bottle on the tower’s ancient formation, while Red, Blue, Steven, and Cynthia prepared to guard the others.
• Li Wei, Ash, Sheena, Meray, Barza, Lance, and Yellow joined their powers to bind and soothe the Shadow inside the bottle.
• The Shadow resisted the purification, began eroding their minds, and drained their power as Sheena said it refused to communicate or be purified.

After their attempt to purify the Prison Bottle failed, Li Wei and the others decided to release the shadow inside and fight it in a remote valley. They opened the bottle, and the taller shadow Hoopa emerged while Hoopa Confined remained safely behind the Diancie.

• Li Wei and Steven called off the purification attempt and settled on fighting the shadow away from Dahara City.
• Steven chose a barren valley north of Route 111, and the group agreed to meet there the next morning.
• The group traveled to the Nameless Valley, where Sheena suspected Yveltal had once unleashed Death Wing.
• Li Wei arranged for Hoopa Confined to stay behind two Diancie while Yellow joined the fighters and the others watched from the cliffs.

Shadow Hoopa summoned six formidable Legendary Pokémon from other worlds to face the group in the Nameless Valley. The chapter ended as the enraged Pokémon gathered beneath the storm, with the Time-Space Instrument sounding an alarm in Michina Temple.

• Li Wei and the others faced Shadow Hoopa after it emerged from the Prison Bottle, and Cynthia recognized it as consciousness born from power.
• Shadow Hoopa opened six Hyperspace Holes and summoned Origin Forme Dialga and Origin Forme Palkia from other worlds.
• Shadow Hoopa also summoned Kyurem, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and a Shiny Regigigas, while Groudon's Desolate Land and Kyogre's primordial sea clashed.

• Shadow Hoopa summoned Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia, Primal Groudon and Kyogre, Shiny Regigigas, and Kyurem to attack Li Wei’s group.
