Background / History
The Cycle of Fate instance presents Mo Yu before he became a guild leader. Appearing about twenty years old, he is a powerful but exhausted novice whose performance in a B-rank instance attracts established guild leaders. He rejects their recruitment offers because he wants to establish his own guild, despite being disadvantaged in experience, numbers, and ability 192 193.
During this encounter, Mo Yu mistakes the older Shen Ru for an assassin and attacks him. Shen Ru instead offers help and exchanges knowledge of Mo Yu’s future dealings with the system for a glowing stone. The younger Mo Yu becomes intrigued by the information and grateful that his attack failed. In the present, Mo Yu calls their meeting fate; the encounter suggests that Shen Ru may have influenced the path that eventually brought them together 193.
By the main story, Mo Yu leads the Dark Night Guild and is recognized as the game’s undisputed top player. His arrangement with the system grants exceptional privileges, but he covertly works toward dismantling channel barriers and establishing a new order 19 78 79 89.
Appearance
- Face and complexion: Strikingly handsome, with flawless, luminous skin and dark eyes 19 29 39.
- Build: Broad shoulders, a narrow waist, a muscular upper body, and long, slender fingers 19 57 161.
- Clothing: Wears a black shirt in the convenience-store instance and finely tailored, immaculate suits in the Living Area 8 40 57.
- Bearing: Maintains an elegant, languid posture even while threatening others; his commanding presence is apparent during public broadcasts 19 39 58.
Personality
Mo Yu’s polished manners conceal cruelty and a fascination with fear. His ambitions are not his only reason for remaining in the Infinite Channel: he enjoys risking discovery by the system and watching players reveal themselves through pain and despair. The channel’s concentrated malice nourishes his emotions 144.
He treats information, reputation, and protection as instruments of control. He charges Shen Ru for additional answers, uses public displays to associate him with Dark Night, and punishes people who test his limits. His explanation for arranging Guan Wenyue’s death ultimately comes down to her refusal to obey 20 29 40 59.
Shen Ru’s unpredictability repeatedly breaks through Mo Yu’s emotional detachment. What begins as amusement and a desire to keep an “obedient” pet develops into love, jealousy, and fear of losing him. Mo Yu becomes willing to dress him, feed him, accept his commands, and entrust him with his own survival, although affection never entirely displaces his possessiveness 40 58 114 133 165 174 184.
Abilities & Skills
Plunder
Mo Yu’s Talent allows him to take and use other people’s Talents 8 29.
- Reduced duration: His use lasts half as long as the original owner’s 29.
- Retained access: Plundered Talents remain available indefinitely, subject to game restrictions 40.
- Owner lockout: While an ability is being plundered, its original owner cannot activate it again 8.
- Time Stop interaction: When Mo Yu uses Shen Ru’s stolen Time Stop, Shen Ru remains conscious and unfrozen but cannot reactivate the Talent himself 8.
- Combined applications: He can use Shen Ru’s Time Stasis alongside Black Shadow to search an area 178.
Dark Shadow / Black Shadow
Mo Yu controls persistent black shadows used for restraint, defense, concealment, and movement. Shen Ru observes that they do not appear to be an ordinary Talent plundered from another player; their precise classification remains unexplained 129.
- Restraint: Immobilizes Shen Ru, restrains An’an, and suspends enemies upside down 8 68 167 175.
- Defense: Stops an incoming weapon and catches Shen Ru during a potentially fatal fall 80 89.
- Concealment: Envelops people in black mist or seals the pair away from outside observers 104 153.
- Movement and transport: Mo Yu emerges from shadows and uses Dark Shadow to bundle up and carry Shen Ru away 67 87 137.
- Lethal force: Dark Shadow shreds a corpse; an invisible force accompanying Mo Yu’s expanding shadows nearly suffocates Qin Yu 59 144.
Swordsmanship and Spatial Attacks
Mo Yu can summon a large black sword and deliver attacks capable of tearing through space 8 167.
- Kills the convenience-store monster with one swing 8.
- Slaughters an approaching mutant army with sword energy that opens a spatial rift 167.
- Cuts down the enormous tree sustaining the Puppeteer’s instance body 182.
- Limit: Repeated sieges with insufficient recovery time remain a potential endurance problem, despite his overwhelming combat strength 167.
System Privileges and Instance Manipulation
In exchange for resolving problems and preserving the game, Mo Yu receives a unique Talent and special authority from the system 79.
- Uses his abilities outside instances, unlike ordinary players 79.
- Chooses which instances to enter, including beginner instances, and can enter or leave them freely 87 88.
- Alters instance operations and brings other players into an ongoing instance 87 88 89.
- Pauses a livestream so Shen Ru can negotiate privately 30.
- Restrictions: His original agreement forbids upsetting channel balance without permission. His control over instance consciousness is incomplete, and game rules limit how much information he can disclose 79 90 108.
Strategy, Impersonation, and Music
- Political maneuvering: Uses recruitment, public rumors, and Dark Night’s backing to influence Shen Ru’s options and rival guild leadership 20 40 58.
- Impersonation: While disguised as Chu Rong, reproduces his arrogance convincingly enough that the assembled players notice nothing wrong 26.
- Violin: Performs during a consciousness sequence, teaches Shen Ru in their shared dream, and plays during his public announcement of romantic pursuit 98 113 114.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black sword — An enormous blade used against the convenience-store monster; later summoned for devastating attacks against mutants and the Puppeteer’s tree 8 167 182.
- The Missing Feet — S-rank Card sought in the beginner instance. It commands monsters within 500 meters for ten minutes and offers a chance of obtaining a Secret Garden Tea Party invitation. Shen Ru steals it from Mo Yu 8.
- Disguise Card — Uses a disguise supplied by Wen Meng to pose as Chu Rong during the Leons’ Tea Party 25 26.
- Violin — Used in performances and intimate exchanges with Shen Ru 98 113 114.

- Glowing stone — Originally an instance reward carried by the younger Mo Yu. Shen Ru trades information for it in Cycle of Fate and gives it to present-day Mo Yu 193.
Relationships
- Shen Ru — Lover, rival, and closest partner. Theft and retaliation develop into mutual fascination, shared opposition to the system, and an officially acknowledged relationship. Their bond remains marked by jealousy, coercion, negotiated boundaries, and reciprocal protection 8 114 165 183 184.
- Sheng Ziyao — Identifies himself as Mo Yu’s brother and serves as Dark Night’s Team Three captain. He protects Mo Yu’s secrets and repeatedly calls Shen Ru his “sister-in-law” 17 19 88.
- Gu Changming — Deputy guild leader and trusted administrator. Handles recruitment, interprets Mo Yu’s political gestures, reports guild affairs, and bears much of the workload created by his absences and jealousy 19 20 57 188.
- Wei Lanxing — Kanghe Guild leader and devoted admirer. Mo Yu temporarily allies with her and Wen Meng during the Leons’ Tea Party 21 25.
- Guan Wenyue — Rival guild leader whose death Mo Yu arranges through Shen Ru. He cites unauthorized channel-merging activity, then admits that disobedience was the decisive reason 29 40 89.
- Qin Yu — A guild-presidency candidate whom Mo Yu offers Dark Night’s support. Mo Yu nevertheless nearly suffocates him for testing his limits through Shen Ru 58 59.
- The Puppeteer — Enemy defeated jointly with Shen Ru. Survives the destruction of his instance body by taking refuge inside Mo Yu’s consciousness, forcing Mo Yu to seek Shen Ru’s rescue 182 184.
- Game system — Former partner and eventual target. Mo Yu gains privileges through service while secretly seeking control of instances and their underlying consciousness 79 87 115 193.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Convenience Store and the Leons’ Tea Party
- Enters the beginner instance to obtain The Missing Feet. Shen Ru steals it using Time Stop, prompting Mo Yu to plunder the Talent and retaliate with shadows. He later returns without the desired invitation and with several A-rank items missing 8 17.
- Publicly associates Shen Ru with Dark Night, offering protection while making it harder for him to separate himself from the guild. Their recovered invitation assigns Shen Ru the role of Mo Yu’s lover 19 20 21.
- Bargains for Guan Wenyue’s death in exchange for answers. Shen Ru kills her and Xi Rui, then places first in the instance while Mo Yu finishes second. Mo Yu broadcasts a public request for Shen Ru to contact him afterward 29 38 39.
Public Claims and the Guild League
- Recognizes that Shen Ru has deliberately created a kidnapping rumor around Qin Yu’s invitation. Mo Yu reverses the trap by calling Shen Ru “my lover,” offering Qin Yu political support, and arranging a conspicuous pickup 57 58 59.
- Proposes entering the Guild League for a chance at a one-day trip for two. Shen Ru selects Mo Yu and Sheng Ziyao as teammates 59.
- In Absurd World, makes his desire for an intimate relationship explicit. Afterward, Shen Ru uses a disguise to avoid him, but Mo Yu finds him at Meng Yizhi’s apartment on the sixth evening 68 77.
My Day
- Reveals his agreement with the system, while Shen Ru uncovers his ability to alter instances. Mo Yu abandons much of the pretense and openly manipulates the mall’s games to provoke him 79 87 88.
- Catches Shen Ru after his reckless leap over a railing. Under questioning, reveals his ambition to dismantle channel barriers and establish a new order; Shen Ru subsequently recognizes that his control of the instance is still incomplete 89 90.
Human-Machine Romance and the System’s Fall
- Holds Shen Ru through painful Mechanicalization and later reveals his own human–machine fusion body. His explanations about the altered players remain constrained by game rules 104 108.
- After the instance, widespread game failures lead Shen Ru to suspect Mo Yu destroyed the system’s consciousness there. Mo Yu publicly announces a malfunction and promises to begin pursuing Shen Ru 114.
- Confirms that the system has been eliminated but retains residual consciousness. Orders Dark Night to locate the remnants and launches a compensation game whose points can cancel required instance entries 115.
Virtual Town and the Entertainment Channel
- Takes a supervisor role in Virtual Town and agrees to bring Shen Ru into a factory said to “create gods.” His higher position still provides only limited information 132 133.
- Following the Puppeteer’s defeat and the destruction of system consciousness, Dark Night takes control of Infinite Channel instances. Difficulty becomes selectable, death rates are reset, and non-player livestream access is blocked 137.
- Travels with Shen Ru into the Entertainment Channel, where their playful investigation of disappearances leads to the Silent Photo Studio 140.
- Attempts to keep Shen Ru out of the Puppeteer’s next game using the Anklet. Shen Ru threatens repeated self-destruction rather than accept confinement; Mo Yu yields, and both enter the forced instance at midnight 165.
Apocalypse: Uncontrolled Evolution
- Acts as the pair’s principal combat force while Shen Ru gathers information and negotiates with other survivors. Their coordinated ambush also exposes Xie Chi’s corrupted body 167 175.
- Holds Shen Ru through repeated death and regeneration during forward evolution. Unable to stop the suffering, Mo Yu becomes visibly terrified and struggles to release him after recovery 174.
- Reaches Shen Ru during the final battle and follows his instruction to destroy the Puppeteer’s life-sustaining tree. Their combined attacks collapse the instance and apparently kill the enemy 182.
Official Relationship and Consciousness Rescue
- Helps conceal Qi Ning’s betrayal and persuades Shen Ru to accept temporary guild leadership with a year’s supply of hot pot base. He also asks to make their relationship official 183.
- Publicly declares Shen Ru his lover amid fireworks, then reveals that the Puppeteer is inside his consciousness. He asks Shen Ru to enter using Mrs. Leon’s Tears and save him 184.
- Within the consciousness scenario, seeing Shen Ru in a wedding dress triggers a violent internal struggle against the Puppeteer’s control. The Puppeteer dies there, after which collapsing channel systems cause rifts and monster invasions 187 188.
Aftermath and Extras
- Works with other guild leaders to restore normal life. When photographs of Shen Ru’s battles attract romantic attention, posts disappear and Gu Changming’s cross-channel network enters supposed maintenance; the outage ends when the couple reunites 188.
- Sends apologies and concessions during a separation caused by his pervasive secret recording of their private life. Shen Ru’s objection concerns the extent of the surveillance, not merely Mo Yu’s unusual preferences 190.
- Warns Shen Ru that he may be unable to accompany him into Cycle of Fate. Shen Ru’s encounter with his younger self links their early history to their present relationship; afterward, Mo Yu values an official place beside Shen Ru more than a grand wedding 192 193.
