Background / History

The Puppeteer created the game and its self-aware system. He also created the space that later became Shen Ru’s Settlement Space, claiming he gave it to Shen Ru because he felt an immediate connection with him. This revelation establishes that his interest began before their first face-to-face encounter 136 155.

After Mo Yu crushed the system, the Puppeteer began launching test Instances on the Entertainment Channel to build a second Infinite Channel. These experiments were unstable and struggled to remain operational. Shen Ru deduced that the Puppeteer needed his particular malice to make the replacement game work 155.

Appearance

  • Hair: Pale and immaculately styled 118.
  • Eyes: Golden, initially carrying an icy smile; become bloodshot when Shen Ru excites him through humiliation 118 156.
  • Face: Handsome and sharply defined 155.
  • Expressions: His refined smile gives way to exaggerated laughter, agitation, and rage when his composure breaks 155 182.
  • Borrowed appearance: Within Mo Yu’s consciousness, he initially uses Qi Ning’s face and later manifests as a figure resembling Mo Yu 184 187.

Personality

The Puppeteer treats Shen Ru as both an artistic ideal and someone he should possess. He watches Shen Ru’s livestreams, creates a puppet with his exact face, and insists that Shen Ru belongs to the game—and to him. He dismisses other players’ malice as predictable and unworthy of his attention 118 155.

His apparent calm is easily disrupted by jealousy. Shen Ru’s relationship with Mo Yu repeatedly provokes him, while even Shen Ru’s staged attention toward Qi Ning makes him withdraw the protection keeping his subordinate alive 155 181 182.

He takes pleasure in Shen Ru’s contempt, commands, and humiliation. Shen Ru exploits this susceptibility to make him accept conditions, reveal information, and kneel. Shen Ru also concludes that the Puppeteer wants to draw out the malicious persona shaped by his father’s influence 155 156 182.

The Puppeteer claims not to enjoy slaughter, unlike Mo Yu, but later forces every player into a deadly survival Instance. His confidence in his own control leads him to underestimate Shen Ru’s concealed abilities and the possibility of Mo Yu reaching him 118 166 182.

Abilities & Skills

Substitution

The Puppeteer can select a Puppet to receive damage in his place. During his first encounter with Shen Ru, an attack aimed at his eye strikes the Shen Ru-shaped puppet instead 118 182.

  • He states that Substitution can be used three times per Instance; Shen Ru initially remains uncertain whether that limit is truthful 182.
  • Shen Ru forces him to exhaust his substitutions during their final battle in Uncontrolled Evolution 182.
  • Substitute Puppets can be destroyed by sufficiently powerful attacks 182.

Instance Creation and Manipulation

As the game’s creator, the Puppeteer constructs dangerous scenarios and manipulates their conditions to pursue Shen Ru 147 155 166.

  • Personalized traps: Uses photographs, memories, and copies of Shen Ru to exploit his lost hopes for a happy family 147.
  • Isolation: Creates an invisible barrier that excludes Mo Yu while he attempts to recruit Shen Ru 136.
  • Forced participation: Sends every Infinite Channel player into the seven-day survival Instance Uncontrolled Evolution, despite the channel no longer belonging to him 166.
  • Malice-based operation: Builds Uncontrolled Evolution from his own malice. Its scale consumes substantial energy, leaving him depleted afterward 166 182 187.
  • Restrictions: His status as Creator does not exempt him from Instance rules. In Virtual Town, the fragmented system supplies the bridge needed for his appearance; destroying it removes his ability to remain there 119 136.

Control of Other Bodies and Consciousness

The Puppeteer can intervene through other beings rather than appearing openly 175 184 187.

  • Intermittent bodily control: Shen Ru determines that the Puppeteer sometimes controls Xie Chi’s body, using him as a route to obtain information 175.
  • Mental refuge: After losing his physical manifestation, he survives inside Mo Yu’s consciousness. Shen Ru identifies that, without a body, he can exist only within someone else’s mind 184.
  • Imitation: Manifests within that consciousness using Qi Ning’s appearance and a likeness of Mo Yu 184 187.
  • Host-specific vulnerability: Shen Ru cannot kill him inside Mo Yu’s consciousness; only Mo Yu can end his presence there 187.

Life-Giving Tree and Mutant Attacks

In Uncontrolled Evolution, the enormous tree in A Zone is identified by Shen Ru as the Puppeteer’s true body within the Instance and the key to his survival 182.

  • The Puppeteer claims its leaf veins represent the Players’ lifelines, concealing its actual importance to himself 182.
  • Its branches attack Shen Ru and repeatedly interrupt his attempts to strike the Puppeteer 182.
  • Mutants emerge from the ground during the battle, preventing Shen Ru from freely reaching the tree 182.
  • Mo Yu cuts the tree down and destroys its trunk, eliminating the escape route the Puppeteer had prepared 182.

Protection and Empowerment

The Puppeteer sustains Qi Ning after he begins undergoing reverse mutation, in exchange for bringing Shen Ru to A Zone 181.

  • His support contributes to Qi Ning’s ability to match Shen Ru in combat 180.
  • Withdrawing that protection causes Qi Ning’s decaying body to collapse rapidly 181.
  • Qi Ning’s promised safety is conditional on the Puppeteer’s continued support, not genuine immortality 181.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shen Ru-shaped Puppet — A life-sized copy with Shen Ru’s face and red eyes. The Puppeteer animates it with threads and uses it as a substitute during Shen Ru’s attack 118.
  • Unfinished marionettes — Numerous eyeless works suspended by fine threads throughout his puppet shop 118.
  • Creation space — The sparse room that becomes Shen Ru’s Settlement Space; the Puppeteer later displays it through a mirror 155.
  • Photographs — Images used to reconstruct Shen Ru’s past and imagined family life. He later sends Mo Yu one of the photographs with the message “Sharing doubles the joy” 147 160.
  • Life-Giving Tree — His life-linked body and intended escape mechanism within Uncontrolled Evolution 182 184.

Relationships

  • Shen Ru — His “muse,” recruitment target, and obsessive fixation. He needs Shen Ru’s malice for his failing game experiments, while Shen Ru repeatedly turns that dependence against him and rejects his claims of ownership 118 155 156 181.
  • Mo Yu — Enemy and rival for Shen Ru. He taunts Mo Yu, attempts to separate him from Shen Ru, and ultimately uses Mo Yu’s consciousness as a refuge after his physical defeat 136 182 184.
  • The system — His creation and a bridge into Virtual Town. Shen Ru suspects he has tacitly abandoned the damaged system; the Puppeteer shows little concern over its destruction 136.
  • Xie Chi — An intermittently controlled body and information source. Shen Ru and Mo Yu kill Xie Chi to sever this route of interference 175 178.
  • Qi Ning — A subordinate promised protection for luring Shen Ru into A Zone. The Puppeteer abandons him in a jealous outburst, and Shen Ru finishes him off 180 181.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Virtual Town

The Puppeteer introduces himself in a puppet shop, tells Shen Ru he has watched his livestreams, and calls him his muse. Shen Ru attacks immediately, but Substitution allows the Puppeteer to escape. Shen Ru interprets Sheng Ziyao’s presence in the shop as a deliberate provocation toward Mo Yu and the Dark Night Guild 118 119.

Later, the Puppeteer speaks through the statue housing the broken system. He isolates Shen Ru and offers lasting power over other channels if Shen Ru joins him and abandons Mo Yu. Shen Ru instead destroys the statue with the faith power he has gathered, ending the system’s consciousness and expelling the Puppeteer from the Instance 136 137.

A Family of Three

The Puppeteer uses a photography studio to present Shen Ru with an idealized version of his family and offers to make the scenes real. Shen Ru rejects the fabrication, exposing that the happy family shown never existed 147.

Through a mirror, the Puppeteer reveals the origin of Shen Ru’s Settlement Space and renews his invitation. Shen Ru identifies his dependence on malice and his susceptibility to humiliation, demanding a genuinely thrilling game as proof of sincerity. The encounter also leaves Shen Ru disturbed by the possibility that the Puppeteer is deliberately awakening his father-shaped persona 155 156.

The test Instance examines whether Shen Ru’s malice differs from the evil thoughts the Puppeteer generates through beauty as temptation. Afterward, the Puppeteer sends Mo Yu a provocative photograph; Mo Yu retaliates with a video 159 160 164.

Apocalypse: Uncontrolled Evolution

The Puppeteer forces all players into a polluted, mutation-ridden world. Shen Ru and Mo Yu treat the enormous Instance as an opportunity: maintaining it should leave its creator with less power to defend himself 165 166.

After severing his access through Xie Chi, they conceal Shen Ru’s offensive strength and make him appear weakened through healing and blood loss. Qi Ning eventually draws Shen Ru into A Zone, where the Puppeteer appears in person 175 179 180 181.

Shen Ru questions him, exhausts his substitutions, and uncovers the tree’s connection to his life. Mo Yu arrives, destroys the tree, and enables Shen Ru to strike the Puppeteer’s heart and eyes. His manifestation rots away as the Instance collapses 182.

Survival Inside Mo Yu’s Consciousness

The Puppeteer survives the battle by taking refuge in Mo Yu’s consciousness. Shen Ru deduces that the intended victim of this contingency was originally himself: Mo Yu’s arrival and destruction of the tree had not been anticipated 184.

During the rescue, Shen Ru separates the Puppeteer’s manifestation from Mo Yu and signals Mo Yu to attack. Only the owner of the consciousness can kill the intruder, so Mo Yu uses Shen Ru’s prepared dagger to stab the Puppeteer repeatedly through the heart 187.
