| Special Grade sorcerer | 29 | Explicitly identifies himself and Gojo as Special Grade. His promotion is not shown; Dazai had previously recognized his potential to reach this rank 15 29. |
Background / History
As a child who could see cursed spirits, Geto experienced disbelief and misunderstanding from his parents and relatives. This makes him particularly sensitive to the persecution of children with similar abilities 24.
He enters Jujutsu High as a newcomer to Jujutsu Society, believing that sorcerers exist to protect non-sorcerers. He joins the same first-year group as Satoru Gojo and Shoko Ieiri and moves into one of the dormitory rooms formerly occupied by Dazai’s deceased classmates, Nozomu Sakai and Sōsuke Mizukawa 14 15.
Appearance
- Narrow eyes and distinctive bangs: These are the features Dazai immediately notices when Geto arrives carrying his luggage 14.
- Gentle, smiling expression: His usual composure visibly deteriorates after witnessing the abuse of Nanako and Mimiko 25.
- Model-student appearance: Dazai initially contrasts his respectable appearance with the mischief he later shares with Gojo 19.
Personality
Geto begins as a principled idealist who treats protecting non-sorcerers as his reason for becoming a sorcerer. Proud of his talent and resolve, he confidently tells Dazai that he will endure hardship without “shattering,” accepting his senior’s comparison of him to a diamond 15.
He is attentive to distress that others conceal. He questions the reasons behind Dazai’s suicidal behavior, notices his discomfort at Lupin, and later recognizes that Dazai offers warmth while keeping people emotionally distant 16 17 28.
His compassion also makes cruelty deeply destabilizing. The villagers’ treatment of Nanako and Mimiko drives him into anger and despair, undermining his belief that ordinary people deserve the sacrifices sorcerers make. He considers eliminating non-sorcerers, but ultimately postpones defection and resolves to become stronger 24 25 29.
Alongside his seriousness, Geto develops a mischievous streak through his friendship with Gojo. They disrupt lessons, steal Dazai’s hanging rope, and flee Yaga’s punishment together. As an adult, he also acts as a restraint on Gojo’s excesses, confiscating his sweets during the Book’s screening 19 21 41.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed Spirit Manipulation
Geto possesses and uses cursed spirits through his innate technique. Gojo repeatedly jokes that his collection resembles Pokémon, a comparison Geto firmly rejects 15 16.
- Collection: Early in his first year, he has not yet acquired a Special Grade cursed spirit 16.
- Orbs: His collection includes cursed spirit orbs, which Gojo asks about during the screening 35.
- Unpleasant taste: Cursed spirits taste awful to him; Dazai supplies specially modified mint candy to alleviate this burden 25.
- Nullification weakness: Dazai describes himself as Geto’s natural counter. Any spirit Geto possesses vanishes upon touching Dazai, while Geto’s innate technique is temporarily nullified by contact 15.
Combat
Geto is regarded as an exceptional young talent alongside Gojo. Dazai believes the first-year trio can defeat a Special Grade cursed spirit without his direct assistance, although he accompanies them as backup 15 17.
- Close-quarters fighting: Dazai distinguishes hand-to-hand combat from the technique-based advantages that otherwise make him Geto’s counter 15.
- Sparring: Geto trains with Gojo after the Star Plasma Vessel mission, despite both having spent the night awake 23.
- Vulnerability to control: At Lupin, the cursed spirit turns Geto and Shoko against Gojo. Dazai intervenes, after which they regain their senses 17.
Teaching and Institutional Leadership
As an adult, Geto teaches at Jujutsu High and serves among the higher-ups. Together with Gojo, he helps overturn the old policies two years after Dazai’s death 34 35.
- Practical instruction: Yuji observes that Geto and Gojo emphasize practical training 37.
- Reform: He continues the institutional changes Dazai set in motion rather than abandoning Jujutsu Society 34.
Equipment / Items
- Modified mint candy: Dazai gives Geto candy fitted with a small attachment made by Tengen that blocks the sense of taste. It is intended to counter the unpleasant taste of cursed spirits 25.
- Candy jar: In adulthood, Geto visits Tengen almost monthly to replenish the candy. He likes its lack of sweetness, but handling the jar painfully recalls Dazai 36.
Relationships
- Satoru Gojo — Classmate, close friend, and eventual fellow teacher and reformer. They fight when they first meet, quickly become inseparable, and later work together within Jujutsu Society 19 34 45.
- Osamu Dazai — Senior, later teacher, and a decisive influence on Geto’s choices. Dazai challenges his idealism and intervenes against his contemplated defection; Geto continues to remember him as “a very good senior” 15 28 29 40.
- Shoko Ieiri — Classmate and friend. Her healing sustains Geto during the curse-controlled fight at Lupin, and she joins the group’s drinking outings 17 21.
- Masamichi Yaga — Teacher who disciplines Geto and Gojo’s mischief. Geto survives to graduation and remains part of the institution Yaga leads 19 34.
- Riko Amanai — Protection-mission charge whose individuality Geto defends against her assigned role as the Star Plasma Vessel 21 22.
- Nanako and Mimiko — Rescued children whose mistreatment precipitates his moral crisis. Geto subsequently helps care for and raise them, later urging them to live happily rather than seek revenge for Dazai 24 26 38 45.
- Toji Zenin — Dangerous opponent whom Dazai employs to test Geto and Gojo. Their antagonism persists into the confrontation following Dazai’s death 21 34.
- Tengen — Connected to the Star Plasma Vessel mission and later supplies Geto’s modified candy 21 29 36.

- During a late-night conversation, he learns about Dazai’s international Special Grade workload and sincerely promises to help him 15.
- Dazai warns that rigid distinctions between good and evil can collapse under harsh experience. Geto insists that he will withstand such a test 15.
Lupin Mission

Star Plasma Vessel Mission
- Geto and Gojo are assigned to protect Riko Amanai. Dazai secretly sends Toji against them, intending the confrontation to force their growth while ordering him to bring Riko back alive 21.
- Afterward, Geto confronts Dazai over treating Riko as a vessel rather than a person. Dazai demands that he record the painful events in the mission report and tells him that he is still “not strong enough” 22.
- Although Geto later grieves his apparent failure to protect Riko, Dazai has secretly taken her somewhere safe and arranged to suppress Tengen’s evolution 22 23 28.
Village Rescue and Crisis of Conviction
- Dazai takes Geto and Gojo to rescue Nanako and Mimiko from villagers who blame and imprison them. Geto clenches his fists hard enough to draw blood 24.

- Dazai lists coercive ways to stop him, then reveals a larger conspiracy involving Geto, Gojo, Riko, and Tengen 29.
- Geto puts defection aside while the threat remains unresolved. After Dazai challenges the practical and moral weaknesses of his proposed world, he regains determination and vows to become stronger 29.
- Dazai shares the conversation with Gojo and introduces political science and legal studies at Jujutsu High as part of his response to Geto’s crisis 29.
Dazai’s Legacy and the Screening
- Three days after Dazai’s death, Geto and Gojo receive an audio tape that leads them to Toji. Their ensuing fight ends with the discovery that Dazai engineered the confrontation 34.
- Neither attends Dazai’s funeral. Despite their conflicted feelings, they follow his prepared path and help overturn the old policies two years later 34.
- During the Book’s screening, Geto sees sides of Dazai he never knew. He nevertheless remembers his senior fondly and counsels Nanako and Mimiko against vengeance 35 38 40.
