Background / History

The five-year bargain

The Zenin clan cast Toji aside despite his formidable combat ability. By the time he meets Dazai, his wife is hospitalized, and he is desperate to find someone capable of saving her. After attacking Jujutsu Headquarters, he confronts Dazai with the Inverted Spear of Heaven and demands to know whether Dazai can help 7 8.

Dazai takes him to his wife’s hospital and uses No Longer Human to erase a cursed technique attached to her. He explicitly states that this does not cure her underlying illness, and tells Toji that someone has targeted them both without revealing the culprit 8.

Dazai offers a bargain: Toji’s wife can survive at least another five years, during which Toji must serve him. At the end, Dazai will transfer a personally bound document containing a “complete storyline” capable of granting Toji’s wish. Toji accepts and requests a Binding Vow, leading to an extended negotiation 8.

Working for Dazai

Toji becomes one of Dazai’s most useful operatives. They jointly kill two Grade 1 sorcerers sent to follow Dazai; afterward, Toji notices Dazai’s shooting calluses and efficient killing, correctly suspecting that his employer once held a high position in the mafia 10 11.

When Dazai calls him after the massacre at Lupin, Toji arrives, offers to kill the cursed spirit responsible, and drives him away with the bodies of Nozomu Sakai and Sōsuke Mizukawa. He does not demand an explanation for the scene 12 13.

His later assignments extend beyond direct combat. Dazai sends him evidence of wrongdoing by higher-ups and advisers, hoping to use police intervention and Zenin influence against them. Toji also delivers a box of requested fingers at a restaurant, then leaves to cook for his family 19 27.

Riko Amanai’s escort mission

Dazai orders Toji to accept the job involving Riko Amanai, fight Gojo and Geto without holding back, and bring Riko back alive. When Toji objects that failing to complete the assassination could damage his professional record, Dazai promises to compensate him. Dazai also tells him to retreat if he cannot win, reminding him that his wife is waiting 21.

Toji seriously injures the Six Eyes and Cursed Spirit Manipulation users but survives the encounter. He recognizes that Dazai has used him as a “whetstone” for the young sorcerers. Dazai admits that he intervened because Gojo and Geto might have allowed Riko to refuse assimilation, disrupting his plans 22 23.

Toji brings Riko to the meeting point near Tengen and hands her over to Dazai. Although Dazai claims to have destroyed Toji’s recording device, Toji secretly retains a second device containing a backup of their conversation 22.

Final assignment and aftermath

On the eve of the agreement’s expiration, Dazai visits Toji’s home and gives him the promised page torn from the Book. His final instruction is to send the backed-up recordings to Gojo and Geto in three days. Toji agrees without questioning him 30.

After Dazai’s death, Gojo and Geto trace the recording to Toji and fight him. Seeing Dazai’s messages forces them to acknowledge that their earlier confrontation with Toji had been arranged by their senior 34.

Toji describes his employment as a business arrangement based on mutual exploitation and carries on afterward. Nevertheless, he keeps Dazai’s old chats and assignment messages on his phone 34.

Personality

Toji treats assassination as professional work: he follows instructions, avoids unnecessary questions, and knows that prying into Dazai’s affairs could be fatal. His discretion earns him more freedom than many of Dazai’s other subordinates receive 27 34 43.

He is pragmatic rather than prideful. When Gojo mocks him for fleeing their fight, Toji readily agrees, maintaining that he abandoned his dignity when he became an assassin. He is also willing to protect himself against his employer’s schemes, as shown by his concealed backup recording 22 38.

At home, his behavior changes sharply. He cooks, cleans, does laundry, prepares his wife’s lunch, cares for Megumi, and buys gifts for his wife. He schedules missions at night and frequently answers that his wife decides matters. Dazai finds the contrast between the Sorcerer Killer and the affectionate husband almost overwhelming 15.

His emotional distance does not prevent him from noticing Dazai’s deterioration. During the third anniversary of Sakai and Mizukawa’s deaths, he warns that Dazai’s inability to let go will end in death, observing that Dazai had not been fully committed to dying when they first met 47.

Abilities & Skills

Heavenly Restriction

Toji possesses a Heavenly Restriction associated with his exceptional physical strength 35.

  • In the Book’s theater, Gojo considers him especially dangerous while everyone else’s cursed techniques are unavailable 35.
  • At Gojo’s request, the Book disables the restriction; Toji immediately feels his body lose strength 35.
  • This suppression occurs within the Book’s specially created viewing space, not as a documented change to Toji’s normal abilities 35.

Combat and assassination

Toji’s speed and lethal weapon use underpin his reputation as the Sorcerer Killer 8.

  • Moves quickly enough to cut Dazai’s neck with the Inverted Spear of Heaven during their confrontation 8.
  • Works with Dazai to kill two Grade 1 sorcerers 10 11.
  • Seriously injures Gojo and Geto during Riko’s escort mission 23.
  • Escapes Gojo rather than continuing an unfavorable fight 22 38.
  • Offers to eliminate the cursed spirit at Lupin, though Dazai declines 13.

Observation and operational caution

Toji combines professional discretion with a wary understanding of Dazai 10 34.

  • Infers Dazai’s mafia background from his calluses, composure, and efficiency at killing 10.
  • Preserves a backup recording despite Dazai’s attempt to remove the evidence 22.
  • Recognizes changes in Dazai’s death wish and warns him about his unresolved grief 47.
  • During the theater screening, distinguishes Dazai’s frightening interrogation methods from the ineffective questioning shown on-screen 36.

Domestic skills

  • Regularly cooks, cleans, does laundry, prepares lunches, and handles childcare and school transport 15.
  • Selects gifts for his wife and sometimes calls Dazai for suggestions 15.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Inverted Spear of Heaven — The weapon he uses to threaten and wound Dazai during their first meeting 8.
  • Inventory Curse Worm — Stores his weapons and the box of fingers delivered to Dazai 8 10 27.
  • Recording devices — Used to record conversations with Dazai; a concealed backup survives the destruction of the original device 22 30.
  • Page from the Book — Received as the promised payment near the end of his five-year service. The supplied passages do not show how he uses it 30.
  • Phone — Retains Dazai’s old messages after his death 34.

Relationships

  • Osamu Dazai — Employer under the five-year bargain. Toji calls him “boss,” understands his ruthlessness, and regards himself as a hired blade rather than a confidant 8 34 43.
  • Mrs. Zenin — His wife and the central reason he accepts Dazai’s terms. Her safety can make him back down even when he is furious with Dazai 8 15.
  • Megumi Zenin — His son. Toji cares for him at home and gives him ginger milk pudding when the theater revelations leave him unsettled. Megumi later threatens to tell his mother about the Sorcerer Killer to extract information 15 36 40.
  • Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto — Opponents in Dazai’s arranged confrontation over Riko and again after Dazai’s death. Both remain cautious around Toji in the theater 21 22 34 35.
  • Zenin clan — The family that cast him aside. When his wife’s targeting is revealed, Toji considers the clan among the possible culprits, but no culprit is confirmed 8.

Trivia

  • Dazai has seen him cooking in a Pink Teddy-Bear Apron, with a knife in one hand, a spatula in the other, and Megumi perched on his shoulder 15.
  • After experiencing Dazai’s driving once, Toji never lets him take the wheel when they travel together 47.
  • During the theater screening, he jokes that Dazai’s special power is a “hundred-percent chance of having every shot trace his outline” 41.
