Background / History
Despite his immense physical power, Toji is ostracized by the Zenin Clan because he lacks a cursed technique and cursed energy. Before meeting Tan Man, he has already clashed with the clan’s elders and is close to leaving the estate 9 22.
Tan Man’s arrival changes that course. Their alliance begins as an exchange of Toji’s strength for money earned through Tan Man’s illusions. After Tan Man’s victory over Satoru Gojo, Toji becomes recognized as the closest supporter of his faction. Clan hostility subsides, and some members begin courting his favor. Toji stays partly to remain near his profitable partner, though his regard for Tan Man grows beyond financial interest 13 37.
With Tan Man’s backing, Toji marries Megumi’s mother and brings her into the clan despite objections to her non-sorcerer status. She dies after giving birth in late 2002, even though Tan Man arranges extensive medical care. When Tan Man breaks down over his inability to save her, Toji reassures him that he has done enough and is not responsible 37.
By summer 2006, Toji and Tan Man have spent nine years building their partnership. They have established an underworld organization and a company, leaving Toji financially secure. He retains his dirty-work contacts at Tan Man’s request and for occasional entertainment, rather than out of financial necessity 32 37 38.
Appearance
- Casual black clothing: Wears an all-black outfit for covert outings and casual black clothes to the Three Great Families’ banquet, standing apart from the formally dressed guests 15 22.
- Kimono: Carries Tan Man’s wrapped firearm gift inside his kimono during a later visit 28.
Personality
Toji is blunt, irreverent, and largely indifferent to the Zenin Clan’s authority. He ignores elders’ criticism, dismisses attendants without ceremony, and initially tells Tan Man to leave him alone. His lack of interest in the clan headship is precisely why Tan Man considers him a suitable ally 6 9 10 12.
He approaches violence pragmatically. Killing carries little psychological burden for him when he considers it necessary, and he treats the underground fight massacre as a successful business venture. His humor is similarly ruthless: after Tan Man nearly kills Gojo, Toji jokes that advance notice would have let him obstruct the Gojo elder and collect the Six Eyes’ bounty 18 19 28.
His detachment does not exclude loyalty. He protects Tan Man’s position within the clan, guards him after his collapse, and offers rare comfort following his wife’s death. By 2006, their relationship resembles brotherhood, rooted in Toji’s appreciation of Tan Man rather than merely their shared blood 12 26 37 43.
Financial security does not end his gambling. He continues betting on football for excitement and becomes interested in seeing whether Tan Man’s plan to make himself indispensable to society will succeed. Although he does not share Tan Man’s fixation on being needed, he willingly supports him 37 43.
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Restriction
Toji’s Heavenly Restriction grants extraordinary physical capabilities and resistance to cursed energy. He does not possess a cursed technique 9 13 29.
- His physical ability far exceeds the six-year-old Tan Man’s, making him an important benchmark for close-combat effectiveness 29.
- His resistance helps him deduce that Evil Eye is not a cursed technique 13.
- Limit: That resistance does not prevent Evil Eye from trapping him in an illusion 9 13.
Superhuman Senses
Toji relies on powerful senses and intuition rather than precise cursed-energy detection 9.
- Notices Tan Man approaching the pond before turning to face him 9.
- Uses intuition to identify likely sorcerers, then his five senses to judge whether they are using cursed energy 9.
- Can perceive Tan Man’s hell summons directly because they are brought into reality rather than being composed solely of cursed energy 9.
- Claims that nothing occurring in the room escapes his senses while he watches television near Megumi 37.
Combat and Assassination
Toji is experienced in hunting sorcerers and dispatching targets rapidly 18 43.
- Pulls Naoya out of Tan Man’s crushing boulders at the last moment and shakes off the black flames 12.
- Knocks out Tan Man’s maid and Hiroya to enable a secret outing 15.
- Shifts from counterattacks to decisive kills during the underground fight massacre 18.
- Snaps the Time Vessel Association leader’s neck in less than a second at Tan Man’s instruction 41.
Combat Analysis
Toji accurately reconstructs unfamiliar abilities from their activation conditions and observed effects 13.
- Deduces that Tan Man’s golden eyes trigger controllable illusions and that the pond summon was used to make him turn around 13.
- Recognizes that Evil Eye leaves no cursed-energy traces, making it useful for covert betting manipulation 15.
- Judges Tan Man’s early hell techniques too straightforward and predictable to qualify him for Grade 1 without his illusions 19.
- Believes he could probably evade Great Wailing Hell because he can perceive its manifestation 19.
Underworld and Gambling Operations
Toji supplies money, contacts, and practical access while Tan Man provides supernatural manipulation 16 30 38.
- Stakes thirty million yen on Razor in an underground sorcerer fight 16.
- Adopts horse-racing schemes with cautious wagers, concealed winnings, and limited betting frequency to avoid scrutiny 30.
- Maintains contacts for assassination commissions and monitors jobs specifically requesting him 38.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Inverted Spear of Heaven: Identified by Tan Man as Toji’s cursed tool and a possible means of overcoming Limitless 29.
- Car: Used to transport Tan Man, leave the underground fight venue, and escape the confrontation with Kenjaku 19 41 43.
- Mobile phone: Receives the Time Vessel Association commission; Tan Man presents its message when seeking the client 38 41.
- Gifts to Tan Man: Obtains a Glock 17 with two magazines at Tan Man’s request, then buys children’s sunglasses to conceal his conspicuous golden eyes 28 30.
Relationships
- Tan Man Zenin — Younger cousin, business partner, and trusted ally. Their employment arrangement develops into a brother-like bond; Tan Man shields Toji from clan hostility, while Toji supports his increasingly ambitious plans 13 19 37 43.
- Jinichi Zenin — Older brother. Toji asks him about Tan Man’s identity after their first encounter 9.
- Megumi Zenin — Son. Megumi lives with him at the Zenin estate; Toji maintains that he monitors the boy through his senses, though Tan Man urges more attention to his development 37.
- Megumi’s mother — Wife. Tan Man helps secure their marriage and her acceptance into the household; her death becomes a lasting shared memory for Toji and Tan Man 37.
- Naoya Zenin — Younger cousin. Toji saves his life to protect Tan Man’s reputation, explicitly not out of affection for Naoya 12 19.
- Naobito Zenin — Clan head and relative. Naobito remains puzzled by Toji’s attachment to Tan Man and questions him about taking the newly recovered boy out again 26 28.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Alliance with Tan Man
- Tan Man secretly contacts Toji through Evil Eye during an estate tour, prompting Toji to investigate the unfamiliar boy’s identity 9.
- Toji watches Tan Man’s public match with Naoya without being invited, then prevents Naoya’s death to preserve Tan Man’s standing and their prospective deal 10 12.
- During their private negotiation, he tests Tan Man’s resolve with killing intent before provisionally accepting the partnership 13.
Underground Fighting and Horse Racing
- Toji brings Tan Man to an illegal fight and bets heavily on Razor, relying on Tan Man to influence the result 15 16.
- When Bookmaker takes Tan Man hostage and violence escalates, Toji kills the attackers. The pair leave with more than 180 million yen and plan less conspicuous schemes 18 19.
- Their horse-racing operation uses Evil Eye to subtly alter horses’ perceptions without leaving cursed residue 30.
Three Great Families Banquet
- Toji recognizes Tan Man’s discomfort among the clans and jokes that killing the Six Eyes could secure the Zenin headship. Tan Man later recalls those words while becoming consumed by murderous ambition 22 23.
- After the fight leaves Tan Man unconscious, Toji remains protectively close to him 26.
- He subsequently delivers the requested firearm and warns Tan Man that a two-hundred-million-yen bounty has been posted on him 28 29.
Time Vessel Association and Kenjaku
- A commission specifically requesting Toji raises Tan Man’s suspicion that the Association wants Toji himself, not merely his skills 38.
- Toji accompanies Tan Man to find the true commissioner and kills the Association’s leader on command 41.
- When Tan Man confronts Kenjaku, Evil Eye distorts Kenjaku’s targeting, allowing Toji to extract Tan Man and drive away. The escape depends on deception, not overpowering Kenjaku’s domain 42 43.
- After learning Kenjaku’s objective, Toji agrees to support Tan Man’s competing plan to manipulate the ensuing chaos and gain control of Jujutsu Society 43.
