Background / History
Naoya was raised as a leading candidate to succeed his father, Naobito Zenin, as clan head. Before Tan Man’s arrival, he was Naobito’s only child with a talent for jujutsu; his older brothers had been assigned to businesses outside jujutsu society. His position entitled him to the clan’s highest standard of service, which he openly enjoyed 6.
By age seven, Naoya had already awakened Projection Sorcery and gained combat experience through the Zenin Clan’s standard training. He belonged to Hei, the clan’s elite group of sorcerers with cursed techniques who had reached Grade 1 5 9 15.
Appearance
- Wears expensive, custom-made clothing made from fine fabric, contrasting with the ordinary clothes initially provided to Tan Man 9.
- His expressions readily reveal his anger; during their first confrontation, Tan Man observes that Naoya has not yet learned to conceal his emotions 7.
Personality
Naoya is entitled and status-conscious, treating obedience as something owed to him. When Tan Man refuses to answer him, he interprets the silence as a challenge to his authority. His contempt for his newly arrived half brother is mixed with jealousy over Naobito’s attention and anxiety about a possible succession rival 6 7.
Despite being unusually precocious for his age, Naoya remains vulnerable to fear and humiliation. Tan Man’s Evil Eye breaks his composure, and his panic turns into a demand that his guard kill Tan Man. He is also deeply concerned about his father’s judgment, approaching a later summons cautiously because he fears punishment 7 10 12.
His defeats temper his arrogance without resolving his fear. Although he admires strength in Toji, that admiration does not overcome his unease around Tan Man. He repeatedly reassures himself that Tan Man only uses “dirty tricks,” yet instinctively keeps his distance 15 20.
Abilities & Skills
Projection Sorcery
Naoya uses the same cursed technique as Naobito, primarily to accelerate his movement and immobilize opponents 11.
- High-speed movement: Bypasses Tan Man’s defending Corpses and reaches his back before they can stop him 11.
- Contact immobilization: Attempts to trap Tan Man in a flat frame with a palm strike, intending to follow with a cursed-energy-reinforced blow 11.
- Limits against illusions: His apparent contact with Tan Man feels insubstantial and fails to activate the expected immobilization; Naobito attributes the failed attack to Tan Man’s unidentified ability 11 12.
- Limits against Infinity: His speed and full-force punch cannot reach Satoru Gojo through Limitless 22.
Combat Training
Naoya received the best training the Zenin Clan could provide, giving him a substantial experience advantage over the newly awakened Tan Man 5 11.
- Evasion: Avoids Tan Man’s summons and retreats before Black Rope’s spikes can strike him 11.
- Tactical patience: Waits for Tan Man’s protective flames to fade while watching for Sanghata Hell 11.
- Speed-based attacks: Circles Gojo to seek an opening, then attacks from behind with momentum and cursed energy concentrated in his fist 22.
Relationships
- Naobito Zenin — Father and principal supporter. Naobito initially considers using Tan Man to assist or motivate Naoya, then gives Naoya advance information about Tan Man’s techniques to help restore his damaged reputation 5 10 11.
- Tan Man Zenin — Younger paternal half brother and succession rival. Naoya’s attempts to intimidate him result in two early defeats, lasting fear, and a later unsuccessful challenge for Hei leadership 6 7 12 20 32.
- Toji Zenin — A clan member whose strength Naoya admires. Toji saves him from Sanghata Hell, but explicitly acts to protect Tan Man’s standing rather than out of affection for Naoya 12 20.
- Satoru Gojo — Opponent at the Three Great Families’ banquet. Naoya remembers him as a “monster,” while Gojo has not bothered to remember their previous meeting 22.
- Kukuru Unit guard — Attendant and protector. The guard refuses Naoya’s order to kill Tan Man because attacking the clan head’s son could have serious consequences 7.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Tan Man’s Arrival

Public Match Between Brothers
- Faces Tan Man before the clan’s elders and officers, with advance knowledge supplied by Naobito 10 11.
- Initially dominates through speed and evasion, but his attempted immobilization fails 11.
