Background / History
Childhood and Clan Expectations
Gojo’s possession of the Six Eyes and Limitless makes him the foundation of the Gojo Clan’s claim to supremacy. After his technique awakens, the clan hosts a banquet chiefly to demonstrate that the other great families cannot compete with it 14.
He also becomes an assassination target. Encounters with hostile curse users teach him to recognize killing intent while still a child. His bounty is later described as slightly higher than Tan Man’s 200 million yen bounty, though its exact amount is not given 23 29.
Three Great Families’ Banquet
The Gojo and Kamo clans arrange another gathering to test Tan Man and humiliate the Zenin Clan. Gojo first faces Naoya, whose Projection Sorcery cannot overcome Infinity. He pulls Naoya into a heavy punch with Blue, knocks him unconscious, and starts to leave before being reminded that Tan Man is still waiting 14 22.
Tan Man attacks without answering Gojo’s request for his name. Gojo crushes four summoned Corpses with Blue, but their regeneration surprises him. His decision to defend against their combined form with Limitless gives Tan Man time to construct a sealed enclosure of rocks, Corpse, and black flames 23 24.
The enclosure targets Gojo’s need to breathe rather than directly overpowering Infinity. Gojo escapes with a full-power Blue and throws the compressed mass toward Tan Man. While his attention is on attacking, Tan Man uses Evil Eye to conceal a Great Wailing Hell fissure behind him 24 25.
The Gojo Clan head intervenes with Gas Manipulation, disrupting Tan Man’s aim. The summoned maw bites off Gojo’s right arm instead of killing him. Severe pain sends Gojo’s cursed energy and incomplete Blue out of control, endangering those trying to help until the clan head knocks him unconscious through a gap in Limitless 25 26.
A secluded sorcerer later fully heals the injury with Reverse Cursed Technique. The defeat nevertheless becomes a closely guarded scandal for the Gojo Clan, and Gojo retains a deep resentment toward Tan Man 30 33 35.
Tokyo Jujutsu High Rematch
Nine years later, Gojo encounters Tan Man in Yaga’s office and immediately recognizes him. He demands a personal “entrance test”: Tan Man must defeat him to enroll, a condition imposed on no other applicant. Both agree to fight outdoors, and Gojo reluctantly provides money for potential damage after Tan Man challenges him to consider Yaga’s responsibilities 33.
Gojo attempts to prevent Tan Man from completing incantations by rushing into close combat. Tan Man counters with the cursed tool Black Rope, which disrupts Limitless, then deploys Scorching Great Hell. After the oxygen-consuming flames force Gojo into the air, Evil Eye distorts his perception and sends him crashing down 34.
Tan Man appears to hold a gun against the back of Gojo’s head, but the weapon vanishes when Gojo reaches for it. Defeated and uncertain whether the illusion has ended, Gojo prepares Red in anger. Geto and Yaga intervene, and Gojo ultimately withholds the attack. Yaga confirms Tan Man’s admission despite Gojo’s objection 36.
Riko Amanai Search and Geto’s Disappearance
While searching for the missing Star Plasma Vessel, Riko Amanai, Gojo and Geto investigate the destroyed Time Vessel Association headquarters. They find extensive civilian casualties and three injured survivors. Gojo initially favors pursuing Riko, but Geto insists on rescuing the injured; Gojo transports them to a hospital while Geto remains behind 41 44 46.
On returning, Gojo destroys rampaging cursed spirits from Geto’s collection with Blue. He discovers fresh combat traces and a large pool of Geto’s blood, but no sign of Geto himself. He searches through the night without finding him 48 49.
Gojo’s desperation leads him to grab Yaga and demand a search effort. Tan Man intervenes, nearly provoking another fight before Yaga redirects them toward cooperation. Gojo reluctantly accepts Tan Man’s help and recognizes that his cursory inspection of the ruins may have left Geto alone with a concealed attacker 49 50.
Personality
Gojo is openly arrogant toward opponents he considers beneath him. As a child, he does not remember Naoya despite their previous meeting, watches his movements with his hands in his pockets, and treats the banquet matches as a waste of time. His confidence rests heavily on the Six Eyes and Limitless 22.
Tan Man exposes a vulnerability beneath that confidence. Gojo’s childhood defeat leaves lingering helplessness and fear, making even an apparently implausible threat from Tan Man unsettling. After their rematch, he insists that a longer battle would have favored him, though he eventually admits that Tan Man’s eyes are a problem he cannot see through 36 44.
His concern for Geto is intense enough to override his usual bravado. Geto’s disappearance leaves him furious, sleepless, and desperate for action. Although pride initially makes him reject Tan Man’s assistance, he ultimately cooperates and acknowledges the possibility that his own carelessness contributed to the crisis 49 50.
Abilities & Skills
Six Eyes
The Six Eyes provide exceptional perception and highly efficient cursed-technique use 22 23 44.
- 360-degree vision: Tracks Naoya’s movements without turning his head or moving his eyes 22.
- Detailed analysis: Recognizes at a glance that Tan Man’s Corpses are not shikigami 23.
- Low energy expenditure: Gojo argues that his near-negligible technique costs would let him outlast Tan Man in a prolonged battle 44.
- Perceptual limits: Cannot detect Evil Eye’s activation or any accompanying cursed-energy movement. Its panoramic vision also makes avoiding Tan Man’s gaze exceptionally difficult 34 44.
Limitless / Infinity
Limitless controls the gap between Gojo and the outside world, extending that distance to infinity rather than creating additional matter 24.
- Stops Naoya’s punch before it reaches Gojo 22.
- Allows Gojo to force through Tan Man’s Black Flame defenses and later break restraining flame threads 33 49.
- Does not remove his need for fresh air; Tan Man exploits this with sealed spaces and oxygen-consuming flames 24 34.
- Can be disrupted by the cursed tool Black Rope 34.
- Is not automatically defeated by illusion: Tan Man recognizes that a guarded Gojo who keeps Limitless active would remain difficult to harm 29.
Blue
Blue produces powerful attraction capable of drawing in, compressing, and controlling surrounding targets 22 23 24.
- Pulls Naoya into a punch while holding him in place, multiplying the damage from opposing forces 22.
- Compresses four Corpses and their weapons into a single mass 23.
- At full childhood output, gathers Tan Man’s enclosure, Corpse, and flames into a sphere that Gojo throws at him 24.
- Destroys the uncontrolled cursed spirits at the Time Vessel Association ruins 48.
Cursed Technique Reversal: Red
Gojo has access to Red by the school rematch, but Geto states that he has yet to master it 36.
- Its recognizable preparatory gesture alerts Geto and Yaga when Gojo aims at Tan Man’s head.
- Geto considers its use at that distance potentially fatal.
- Gojo abandons the attack before releasing it 36.
Combat Judgment
- Recognizes killing intent through experience with assassination attempts 23.
- Revises his strategy for the rematch, prioritizing close combat to interrupt Tan Man’s incantations 34.
- Identifies Tan Man’s eyes as the source of the illusion after their second fight 34 44.
Relationships
- Tan Man Zenin — Rival and school junior who defeats him twice. Their hostility later gives way to reluctant cooperation in the search for Geto 25 36 50.
- Suguru Geto — Classmate and close companion who challenges his pride and his attitude toward civilians. Geto’s disappearance leaves Gojo distraught 35 44 46 49.
- Masamichi Yaga — Teacher and principal. Yaga restrains Gojo after the rematch and pushes him to accept help during Geto’s disappearance 36 49 50.
- Shoko — Fellow second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High 35.
- Gojo Clan head — Protects him during the childhood duel, then subdues him so his injuries can be treated. The intervention prevents Tan Man’s intended killing blow but does not prevent the loss of Gojo’s arm 25 26.
- Naoya Zenin — Childhood opponent whom Gojo effortlessly defeats and does not remember from their earlier meeting 22.
Notable Quotes
“Nope. You're the only one who gets my special treatment.” 33
“Even my Six Eyes couldn't pick up how he activated that technique. I couldn't see any movement of cursed energy at all.” 44
“Get out of my way. Geto's life is at stake!” 49
Trivia
- His emergence upsets the balance between sorcerers and cursed spirits. The resulting stronger curses and heavy casualties leave Tokyo Jujutsu High understaffed, with Yaga teaching every year 49.
- Tan Man considers keeping Gojo alive strategically useful: stronger cursed spirits would increase society’s dependence on sorcerers and the Great Families 32.
- Gojo’s childhood recovery is performed by another sorcerer; it does not demonstrate that he could heal himself at eight years old 24 30.
