Background / History

Tan Man died from overwork in his previous life after growing up in an abusive household. Reading manga on a secondhand phone was one of his few inexpensive comforts, leaving him with vivid knowledge of Jujutsu Kaisen when he reincarnated into its world 1 2.

His second childhood repeated the neglect and violence of his first. His mother had fled Germany following a supposed “Witch Hunt” and told him that his maternal grandmother was known as “the last witch of the twentieth century.” She expected his inherited power to secure the approval of an unnamed man, later revealed to be Naobito Zenin 1 2.

Naobito had promised her a comfortable life if she bore an exceptional child. As their circumstances deteriorated, she treated Tan Man increasingly as a failed investment. He nevertheless hoped that awakening his power would earn ordinary parental affection 1 2.

At six, he approached her to demonstrate Eight Hot Hells: Reviving Hell. The black flames engulfed her, while his simultaneously awakened Evil Eye exposed her memories and revealed his father’s identity. Learning about her persecution and desperation complicated his feelings toward the woman who had abused him 1 2.

Appearance

Tan Man grows from a thin, bruised six-year-old into a tall teenager with lean, defined muscles. His mixed heritage and unusual eyes make him conspicuous both within the Zenin estate and in public 3 9 32.

  • Golden, snake-like eyes: His most recognizable feature and the means through which Evil Eye activates 2 13.
  • Childhood injuries: Bruises and abrasions are visible beneath the soot after the Kabukicho fire; a maid later finds his body covered in bruises 3 9.
  • Horns: Reappear when he activates Evil Eye during the match against Naoya 11.
  • Adult-sized stature after the time skip: Stands 180 cm tall 32.
  • Children’s sunglasses: Supplied by Toji to conceal his golden eyes during their early racetrack outings 30.

Personality

Tan Man’s calm speech and calculated behavior repeatedly unsettle adults who expect him to act like an ordinary child. His composure does not mean he is fearless: he trembles under Toji’s killing intent but refuses to submit, determined never to become another person’s tool 4 12 13.

His pursuit of strength begins as a means of survival and develops into a demand for autonomy, recognition, and belonging. He wants the Zenin Clan intact rather than destroyed, and eventually aims to make himself indispensable to jujutsu society. The clan’s respectful treatment after his victory over Gojo gives him a rare feeling of family acceptance 13 29 36 43.

He is capable of sustained discipline and ruthless violence. During childhood training, he demands repeated bouts without special treatment; outside training, he accepts killing as a way to strengthen Eight Hot Hells. Guilt remains present, but becomes entangled with his belief that wrongdoing has enabled his survival 18 20.

Favoritism and humiliation can break his restraint. Naobito’s preparation of Naoya triggers retaliation, while gossip about his mother and envy of Gojo lead him toward a premature killing attempt. Afterward, he questions the influence of his mother’s apparition and recognizes his lack of contingency planning 11 22 23 27.

His compassion is selective rather than indiscriminate. He expresses lasting gratitude to Yaga and tolerates Maki’s secret visits because her rejection by the clan reminds him of his own childhood. He is much more guarded with business contacts such as Mei Mei 32 33 40 48.

Abilities & Skills

Evil Eye

Evil Eye is a witch-bloodline power, not a cursed technique. Direct eye contact places a target in an illusion lasting one minute in real time, during which Tan Man can shape the experience and peer into the target’s mind 2 13.

  • Eligible targets: Humans, cursed spirits, animals, and other beings with free will. Multiple targets can be affected simultaneously if they meet his gaze 2.
  • Usage limit: Three activations per twenty-four hours; the same individual cannot be affected twice within one day 2.
  • Mind-reading limit: Primarily reveals current thoughts and concerns, rather than providing unrestricted access to every memory 13.
  • Undetectable cursed-energy signature: Leaves no cursed-energy traces, allowing covert communication and gambling manipulation 9 15.
  • Perceptual concealment: Hides Great Wailing Hell and its cursed energy from Gojo during the childhood banquet fight 25.
  • Pain interference: Pain can disrupt the illusion, as demonstrated when Gojo’s arm injury jolts him awake 13 25.
  • No automatic defense bypass: An opponent who keeps Limitless active and refuses to react as intended remains difficult to harm 29.
  • No omnidirectional awareness: Tan Man cannot watch every observer around him, leaving him vulnerable to interference outside his focus 25.

Eight Hot Hells

Eight Hot Hells spends cursed energy to summon the products of hell, rather than ordinary shikigami. Its innate technique establishes a contract with hell, bringing its inhabitants and objects into reality 2 9.

Further hell techniques unlock according to the severity of Tan Man’s sins. Deception, gambling, incitement, and killing contribute to his growth, with slaughter directly preceding Great Wailing Hell’s release 2 18 19.

Technique Demonstrated effects and limits
Reviving Hell / Great Hell of Equal Lives Summons black-flame-wreathed Corpses. They regenerate after destruction and cannot be permanently killed while the summoning remains active. Their early individual strength is limited by Tan Man’s proficiency 2 5.
Great Hell of Black Rope Produces a black-flame whip and flame trails that erupt into spikes. Used to restrict movement, create defensive zones, and bind regenerated Corpses into a larger body 5 11 23.
Great Hell of Crushing / Sanghata Hell Summons enormous black-flame boulders to crush targets. Also used to block exits and construct or reinforce a stone enclosure 5 18 24.
Great Wailing Hell Opens a spatial rift within his sight and summons a monster to devour a target. Distance and proficiency affect energy cost, accuracy, and rift size. It cannot directly drag present-world beings or objects into hell 19.
Scorching Great Hell Summons a black sun that rains explosive black flames, destroying terrain and consuming surrounding oxygen 34.
  • Hellfire protection: Hellfire does not actively harm its summoner, but is not entirely harmless. Ordinary fires ignited by its spread remain lethal to him 2.
  • Incantation enhancement: Full chants and hand signs increase output; early abbreviated casting reduces the number of Corpses he can summon 5 11.
  • Visible summons: Hell’s inhabitants are not simply constructs of cursed energy and can be perceived without ordinary cursed-energy perception 9.
  • Early exhaustion: Low proficiency causes wasteful energy expenditure, and powerful combinations initially overwhelm his frail body 5 6 12.

Combat Strategy

Tan Man relies on layered attacks, controlled perception, and preparation rather than a single overwhelming move 5 24 34.

  • Guides Naobito into a crushing attack by using Corpses and Black Rope to restrict his escape routes 5.
  • Attempts to suffocate young Gojo inside a burning stone enclosure instead of forcing an attack directly through Limitless 24.
  • Combines a technique-disrupting cursed tool, oxygen-consuming flames, and Evil Eye during their later rematch 34.
  • Uses frightening illusions to break Awasaka and Ogami’s confidence before offering them surrender 31.
  • Accepts Toji’s criticism that his early hell techniques are too direct and predictable to qualify him for Grade 1 on their own 19.

Domain Defense and Limitations

Tan Man’s knowledge of the setting does not substitute for technical mastery. Barrier studies remain difficult, and he has not learned Domain Expansion after nine years 43.

  • Falling Blossom Emotion: Learned from Naobito as an available defense against domains 43.
  • Illusory escape: Makes Kenjaku attack a phantom while Toji removes his real body from danger 43.
  • Important limit: Evil Eye cannot prevent damage if Kenjaku ignores perceptual feedback and attacks his open domain’s entire range indiscriminately 43.
  • Simple Domain: Pays Mei Mei to investigate access to New Shadow Style despite its restriction on teaching outsiders; successful acquisition is not established 48.
  • Reverse Cursed Technique: Identified as a skill he needs, but the supplied chapters do not establish that he learns it 29.

His apparent restoration of crushed limbs inside Womb Profusion is part of the phantom Kenjaku perceives, not confirmed bodily regeneration 42 43.

Knowledge, Finance, and Organization

Tan Man uses memories of the original story alongside money, personnel, and institutional connections 2 32 45.

  • Conceals his prior knowledge of Toji by attributing it to Evil Eye’s mind-reading 13.
  • Recognizes Awasaka and Ogami on sight and exposes Kenjaku’s identity through knowledge of the Itadori family 30 42.
  • Establishes an underworld organization and company with Toji 32.
  • Sets Hei’s overall direction without personally managing every daily operation 37.
  • Uses front men, police connections, and strategically assigned clan searchers to control investigations 45.
  • Recognizes that his interventions can invalidate his knowledge of future events, especially after Geto disappears 46.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Glock 17 and two magazines — A gift from Toji following Tan Man’s request for guns rather than cursed tools. Even as a child, he can handle its light weight using cursed-energy reinforcement 19 28.
  • Black Rope cursed tool — Obtained in Africa through investment and bribery. Disrupts Gojo’s Limitless on contact but wears away through use, prompting Tan Man to conserve it. It is distinct from his similarly named hell technique 34.
  • Children’s sunglasses — Hide his conspicuous golden eyes during racetrack schemes 30.
  • Bank cards — Used for a charitable contribution through Yaga and advance payment for damage from his entrance-test fight 33 36.

Relationships

  • Naobito Zenin — Biological father, confirmed by a paternity test. Their relationship begins as a negotiation over Tan Man’s usefulness and develops into a guarded alliance; Tan Man later calls him his “accomplice” 4 8 10 40.
  • Tan Man’s mother — Abusive parent whose hopes center on his inherited power. Her memories reveal the desperation behind her behavior, leaving him with unresolved grief and recurring visions of her charred figure 1 2 18 27.
  • Naoya Zenin — Older half-brother and succession rival. Tan Man’s victories leave Naoya fearful, and Naoya later fails to contest his acquisition of Hei leadership 10 11 20 32.
  • Toji Zenin — Older cousin, initial hired ally, and long-term business partner. Their money-for-strength arrangement grows into a bond resembling brotherhood 13 32 43.
  • Masamichi Yaga — Childhood benefactor and later principal. Tan Man credits him with saving his life by contacting Naobito and provides money for Yaga to help others 3 32 33.
  • Satoru Gojo — Long-standing rival whom Tan Man severely injures in childhood and defeats again during his entrance test. Their hostility persists after enrollment 25 33 36 49.
  • Hiroya Zenin — Childhood guide and bodyguard. Protective toward Tan Man, but compelled to obey when the boy invokes their difference in rank 9 12.
  • Ogi Zenin — Clan elder and rival leadership candidate. His initial indifference shifts toward recognition of Tan Man’s strength and candidacy 9 29.
  • Jiro Awasaka and Ogami — Recruited curse users and loyal subordinates. Their allegiance begins after Tan Man terrifies them with Evil Eye; his later arrangements satisfy their interests in money and killing 31 38 40.
  • Maki — Younger clan member who uses his courtyard as a refuge. He recognizes his own rejected childhood in hers and asks her to keep Riko’s presence secret 40.
  • Riko Amanai — Star Plasma Vessel hidden in his courtyard and central to his attempt to reshape the merger crisis for personal advantage 40 42.
  • Kenjaku — Adversary whose concealed identity and plans Tan Man knows. Their attempted negotiation becomes a domain attack, followed by Tan Man’s illusory escape 42 43.
  • Mei Mei — Transactional contact paid to investigate a route to learning Simple Domain and to keep their dealings confidential 48.
  • Kento Nanami and Yu Haibara — First-year classmates. Tan Man responds openly to Haibara’s curiosity and asks both to call him by his given name 49.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Kabukicho Disaster and Zenin Recognition

  • His awakening causes a fire associated with approximately one thousand deaths. With no legal identity and little protection, he fears punishment from jujutsu authorities and retaliation from local gangs 3 14.
  • Yaga arranges a meeting with Naobito. Tan Man earns protection by demonstrating his techniques and injuring the clan head in a carefully sequenced attack 4 5.
  • Naobito grants him the Zenin surname before receiving paternity confirmation, then publicly announces him as his son once the test returns 8 10.
  • During his public test against Naoya, he recognizes Naobito’s favoritism and abandons his plan to lose narrowly. Toji saves Naoya from the finishing attack to protect Tan Man’s position 11 12.

Partnership with Toji and the Villa Massacre

  • Tan Man recruits Toji by offering money-making opportunities in exchange for strength and services 13.
  • Their attempt to influence an underground sorcerer fight escalates when Bookmaker takes Tan Man hostage 15 16 18.
  • Tan Man kills Bookmaker, ignites the basement, and blocks its exit while Toji kills the attackers. The accumulated sins unlock Great Wailing Hell 18 19.
  • They leave with more than 180 million yen. Tan Man later admits to Naobito that he killed to become stronger, receiving greater independence rather than punishment 19 20.

Three Great Families Banquet

  • The Gojo and Kamo clans arrange the gathering to investigate Tan Man and humiliate the Zenin Clan through a contest with Satoru 14 21.
  • Humiliation and envy intensify Tan Man’s hostility. He combines Corpses, Black Rope, crushing rocks, and fire to threaten Gojo before hiding Great Wailing Hell with Evil Eye 22 23 24 25.
  • The Gojo clan head’s intervention disrupts his aim; the attack takes Gojo’s right arm instead of killing him. Tan Man is suffocated by Gas Manipulation and loses consciousness 25.
  • His performance earns Zenin admiration, but he later recognizes that he ignored outside interference and the aftermath of a possible killing. A 200-million-yen bounty is placed on him 26 27 29.
  • He subsequently uses Evil Eye to manipulate horse races with Toji and confronts Awasaka and Ogami with an ultimatum 30 31.

Hei Leadership and Tokyo Jujutsu High

  • Nine years later, Tan Man leads Hei and enjoys the elders’ support as their strongest hope for Zenin supremacy 32.
  • He seeks enrollment at Tokyo Jujutsu High to obtain an official affiliation beyond the clan. Gojo makes admission contingent on a personal “entrance test” 32 33.
  • Tan Man wins through Black Rope, Scorching Great Hell, and Evil Eye. Yaga confirms his admission; the apparent gun threat at the match’s climax is suggested to have been illusory 34 36.

Star Plasma Vessel Scheme

  • Tan Man hides Riko, mobilizes subordinate watchers, and secures Naobito’s cooperation while seeking the greatest gains from the merger crisis 40.
  • He stages low-level cursed-spirit incidents to enter the official search under a helpful pretext, then visits the Time Vessel Association with Toji 41.
  • After exposing Kenjaku, he uses Evil Eye to escape the ensuing domain attack. His broader plan is to deepen the chaos and present himself as the indispensable figure capable of resolving it 42 43.
  • Geto’s disappearance introduces an unexpected threat. Tan Man suspects Kenjaku may have killed him to acquire Cursed Spirit Manipulation, but cannot confirm this 46.
  • He pursues Simple Domain through Mei Mei, meets Nanami and Haibara, and intervenes when Gojo directs his anger over Geto’s disappearance at Yaga 48 49.

Trivia

  • The explanatory text explicitly identifies Evil Eye as originating from Ban Mido in GetBackers 2.
  • Other clans initially suspect he possesses Ten Shadows, but his actual cursed technique is Eight Hot Hells 2 14.
  • Kenjaku estimates his strength at Special Grade level. This is Kenjaku’s assessment, not a confirmed official rank 42.
