Background / History

Tan Man’s parentage

Naobito had a relationship with a German woman who told him she possessed a witch bloodline and wanted to bear his child. He promised that an exceptional child would allow her to live comfortably within the Zenin Clan. Tan Man later learns of this promise through her memories, which reveal Naobito’s contempt despite her hopeful interpretation of his words 2 4.

Within his established family, Naobito favored Naoya as his prospective successor because of his talent for jujutsu. His older sons had been assigned to businesses outside jujutsu society 6.

Recognition and the Kabukicho settlement

After the Kabukicho fire, Masamichi Yaga contacted Naobito on behalf of six-year-old Tan Man. Naobito initially dismissed the claim that the boy was his illegitimate son, but agreed to meet him at an abandoned chemical plant. Their resemblance and Tan Man’s detailed account of his mother gradually made him take the claim seriously 3 4.

Naobito demanded a demonstration of Tan Man’s worth. During their fight, the boy’s coordinated summons, Black Rope, and crushing boulders caught him off guard, burning his palms and clothes. Impressed by Tan Man’s tactical instincts, Naobito took the unconscious child to the estate and pledged that the Zenin Clan would handle the disaster’s aftermath 5.

He granted Tan Man the Zenin surname before receiving the paternity results, formally recognizing him as a clan member regardless of the eventual biological finding. He also arranged care and postponed training because the boy was too frail to withstand even the Kukuru Unit’s lightest exercises 8.

The test confirmed Tan Man was his son. Naobito informed the elders and senior members, then arranged a public demonstration to persuade them to support the costly Kabukicho settlement. His authority was not absolute: senior members could veto decisions they considered harmful to the clan’s interests 10.

Favoritism and growing independence

Naobito staged Tan Man’s debut as a match against Naoya and disclosed the boy’s known techniques to Naoya beforehand. He intended to demonstrate Tan Man’s usefulness while allowing Naoya to win and repair his damaged reputation. Instead, Tan Man retaliated against the unequal arrangement and nearly killed Naoya before Toji intervened 10 11 12.

After consulting the senior members, Naobito accepted that Tan Man had demonstrated sufficient value. Nevertheless, he avoided openly drawing closer to him, fearing that apparent favoritism would destabilize succession politics 12 15.

When Tan Man later returned bloodied and admitted killing “to get stronger,” Naobito connected the confession with the Kabukicho fire and his research into the Eight Hot Hells. He began forming a theory about the technique’s growth, withdrew Tan Man’s guard and maid, and allowed him greater independence. The text also states that he intended to dispose of the attendants as loose ends, but does not establish that he carried this out. He subsequently accompanied Tan Man to his mother’s burial 20.

Three Great Families banquet

At the banquet, Naobito challenged the Kamo Clan head’s priorities, arguing that the Gojo Clan’s Six Eyes posed the greater threat to both families. He privately hoped Tan Man’s unexplained potential might offer a counterweight to Gojo dominance 21.

He sent Naoya against Satoru Gojo first, attempting to improve Tan Man’s chances despite knowing that the Six Eyes would minimize Gojo’s cursed-energy expenditure. Naoya lost decisively, while Tan Man’s subsequent performance surpassed Naobito’s expectations 22 23 24.

As Tan Man’s final attack threatened Gojo’s life, Naobito briefly considered massacring the rival clans’ representatives to secure Zenin supremacy. His hesitation allowed the Gojo Clan head to intervene, disrupting Tan Man’s attack and leaving Gojo with his right arm bitten off 25.

Naobito then seized the Gojo Clan head’s wrist and stopped his technique. He blamed the intervention for the injury and warned that killing Tan Man would mean war with the Zenin Clan. Although this prevented immediate escalation, many Zenin members resented his restraint, believing he had squandered an opportunity for clan dominance 25 26.

After Tan Man recovered, Naobito questioned his intention to kill Gojo and was surprised by his explicit ambition to become a future clan head. Rather than punish him, he warned that the clan head’s son could be seen as acting on the clan’s behalf and reassigned him to full-time Akari training 27 28.

Later alliance with Tan Man

Nine years later, Naobito approved Tan Man’s enrollment at Tokyo Jujutsu High after questioning his plans for Gojo. Tan Man had already become the Hei’s leader and established an organization and company with Toji. His proposal to use Gojo’s continued existence to increase jujutsu society’s importance—and ultimately Zenin influence—revealed ambitions beyond what Naobito had anticipated 32.

During the Star Plasma Vessel crisis, Tan Man disclosed that Riko Amanai was hidden in his courtyard and requested a discreet servant to care for her. Naobito recognized the danger to Tengen’s merger but did not immediately reject the plan. Tan Man appealed to their nine years of trust, calling him his “accomplice” 40.

Naobito later agreed to raise questions at Jujutsu Headquarters about how Riko’s kidnappers obtained classified information, supporting Tan Man’s attempt to turn the investigation into an opportunity for Zenin influence. He remained troubled by his son’s unexplained knowledge and informed him of Suguru Geto’s disappearance and the rampaging cursed spirits found at the association ruins 45 46.

Personality

Naobito judges family members through talent, usefulness, and clan status rather than unconditional affection. His initial acceptance of Tan Man is explicitly transactional: he first envisions the boy assisting Naoya or stimulating Naoya’s development, not succeeding him. He feels no guilt about giving Naoya an unfair advantage in their public match 5 11.

His preference for Naoya coexists with a willingness to recognize unexpected ability. Tan Man’s ingenuity repeatedly forces him to revise his judgment, eventually turning an unwanted claimant into a valuable political partner 5 12 32 40.

As clan head, he is attentive to legitimacy, reputation, and consequences. He can contemplate extreme violence, but ultimately restrains the banquet confrontation rather than committing the clan to immediate war. His guarded concern for Tan Man appears through warnings, training arrangements, and continued protection rather than conventional tenderness 25 28.

He frequently drinks while thinking or conducting family business. Even during the tense journey to the banquet, he focuses on preparing to outdrink the rival clan heads 8 20 21.

Abilities & Skills

Projection Sorcery

Naobito uses Projection Sorcery for rapid movement, immobilization, and defensive manipulation 5 11.

  • Frame immobilization: Traps a summoned corpse in a flat frame before crushing it with a cursed-energy-reinforced stomp 5.
  • Flame removal: Carefully strips Tan Man’s clinging black flames from his foot 5.
  • Emergency defense: Deliberately makes his technique fail, sealing himself within a frame aligned with the collision planes of Tan Man’s boulders to reduce impact damage 5.
  • Escape: Briefly seals both crushing boulders in frames after his defensive frame breaks, allowing him to escape 5.
  • Limits: The defensive maneuver does not prevent burns and significant damage. Naobito also believes his Projection Sorcery cannot break through Gojo’s Limitless 5 15.

Combat Analysis

An experienced fighter, Naobito assesses unfamiliar techniques through observation and direct testing 5.

  • Identifies that Tan Man’s corpses do not behave like ordinary cursed spirits or shikigami, then recognizes their regeneration and value in prolonged combat 5.
  • Acknowledges that taking Tan Man seriously from the outset would have allowed him to close the distance before the boy completed his layered attack 5.
  • Infers that an undisclosed ability caused Naoya’s panic, despite finding no cursed residue 8.
  • Deduces Tan Man’s suffocation strategy against Gojo by connecting the enclosed space, flames, and the Gojo Clan head’s reaction 24.

Political Management

Naobito combines clan resources, negotiated support, and procedural arguments to protect Zenin interests 10 25 45.

  • Uses the clan’s money, connections, and name to address the Kabukicho disaster 10 14.
  • Seeks senior members’ approval through demonstrations of Tan Man’s value rather than relying solely on orders 10 12.
  • Uses the sequence of events and threat of war to halt the Gojo Clan head’s attack 25.
  • Cooperates with Tan Man’s effort to redirect Headquarters’ investigation toward an internal information leak 45.

  • Naoya Zenin — Favored son and early succession choice. Naobito protects his reputation and prepares him for the match against Tan Man 6 10 11.
  • Unnamed older sons — Assigned to businesses outside jujutsu society rather than positioned as jujutsu successors 6.
