Naomitsu took Shoko to the amusement park. To be honest, he had never been to one, either in his previous life or in this one.
This time, he was determined to have all the fun he could.
"You little rascal. I asked you to take me out, and you picked somewhere you wanted to go yourself?"
"Don't worry, Shoko. I'll make sure you have fun," Naomitsu said with a grin.
They bought tickets and entered the amusement park. It was crowded, and Naomitsu and Shoko threaded through the people like a brother and sister.
Holding hands, they rode the giant pendulum, then the roller coaster. They also went on the Ferris wheel and the carousel. Finally, utterly exhausted, they sat down on a bench by the lake.
"You little rascal, you really do have endless energy."
Shoko was worn out. This felt even more tiring than treating patients at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Still, the rides had been pretty fun.
"Too bad it isn't summer, or we could go on the river rapids ride too. Shoko, why don't you come back to Kyoto in the summer? We can go together then.
"And the Summer Festival here is really fun. There's a fireworks show and all sorts of interesting stuff."
Fed up with Naomitsu's nonstop chatter, Shoko ruffled his hair as punishment.
"Little guy, it's getting late. Time to take you back, or Utahime will call and start nagging again."
As soon as she mentioned Utahime Iori, the phone in Shoko's pocket rang. She took out her flip phone and answered.
"Hello?"
"..."
"..."
Whatever the person on the other end said, it left Shoko silent for a long time.
"You can't get hold of Gojo?"
"..."
"All right. I understand."
"..."
Another silence followed, and the air suddenly grew oppressive. The smile vanished from Shoko's face, replaced by a bleak, blank stare.
"What's wrong, Shoko?" Naomitsu asked cautiously.
"Nothing... I might not have time to take you back. There's something I need to do. I have to return to Tokyo Jujutsu High."
Shoko's voice was like a stretch of dreary rain, flat and almost emotionless. It made his heart ache.
"Shoko! Let me come with you!"
Naomitsu caught her hand and found it ice-cold. Shoko smiled again, but this time it looked strained.
"Go home, little guy. I'll come see you again when I have time."
After making that promise to Naomitsu, Shoko left. Her retreating figure looked lonely and forlorn in the setting sun.
She looked... as though she had lost something...
"Forget it. I'll go home. I've learned Reverse Cursed Technique anyway."
Shaking his head, Naomitsu stopped insisting. He had enjoyed himself today, and he was truly grateful to Shoko.
"Next up is a domain. While I work on figuring that out, I can also use a Shikigami Taming Ritual as a way to make a breakthrough."
The thought of his plans for growing stronger filled Naomitsu with eager anticipation. He even skipped along on his walk home.
Naomitsu did not return to school. He went straight home.
Once home, he called Utahime Iori and told her that he had learned Reverse Cursed Technique and that Shoko had gone back.
Utahime Iori was furious. She grumbled about Shoko over the phone without any regard for her usual composure. Shoko had actually left without even telling her, and it had her fuming.
Naomitsu did not dare say a word until he said goodbye to Utahime Iori and hung up.
"I didn't expect Ms. Utahime Iori to be that angry. Are those two going to fight?"
Naomitsu could already picture Shoko getting a scolding.
He did not dwell on it. Before long, he was caught up in the joy of learning Reverse Cursed Technique, constantly experimenting and improving his proficiency.
It was not until the next day, when Naoya Zenin told him the news, that Naomitsu finally learned why Shoko had reacted that way.
Suguru Geto had defected from Tokyo Jujutsu High, killed over a hundred villagers, then murdered his own parents. He had become a Special Grade curse user.
Yes, that Suguru Geto-the one who had been in the same class as Shoko and Satoru Gojo and had been close friends with them.
"Naoya! How did you find out... something like this?"
Naomitsu put a hand on Naoya Zenin's shoulder. Who knew where this little guy got his information? He could even get his hands on news like this.
"Boss, I may be your underling, but I'm still the heir to the clan leadership. Of course I can get information like this."
Naoya Zenin looked proud as he called himself the heir. Naomitsu had promised him that he would not compete with him for leadership of the Zenin Clan.
That was also why Naoya Zenin still called Naomitsu "Boss," even though the gap between their abilities was not all that large.
Naomitsu went to school with Megumi Fushiguro and Naoya, but he did not see Utahime Iori there that day.
She had probably contacted Shoko to learn what had happened, then hurried to Tokyo Jujutsu High to comfort her.
Kyoto Jujutsu High was probably in complete chaos by now. A Special Grade curse user had emerged from their school. That was no small matter.
At noon, Naomitsu stood on the rooftop, gazing into the distance. Behind him, Maki and Mai came up carrying their lunch boxes.
"Nao! What are you looking at? Come eat! If you don't hurry, Mai will eat everything!"
"Stupid sister! I haven't eaten anything yet!"
Listening to the sisters bicker eased the heaviness in Naomitsu's heart. His smile returned, and he walked over to them.
"All right, stop arguing. Let's eat."
As they ate, both sisters kept piling meat from their lunch boxes into Naomitsu's. He gobbled it down, yet the pile never seemed to shrink.
"Nao, eat more. You're still growing."
"Mm-hmm! My sister's right!"
The sisters had been at each other's throats a moment ago, but now they were getting along again. Naomitsu gave a helpless smile and could only keep eating the meat as fast as he could.
If only I'd been born a few years earlier. Then I'd have twin little sisters. With their personalities, they'd both have to do as I said.
But knowing Ogi Zenin, he probably would not have wanted another child after Naomitsu was born.
Naturally, that would mean neither Maki nor Mai would have been born.
"Whew! Finally finished! I'm stuffed!"
Naomitsu put down his lunch box and rubbed his round, bulging belly. He felt that if he ate any more, his stomach would burst.
"Nao! Are you going to have a baby?"
"Hahaha!"
The sisters' teasing infuriated Naomitsu. He immediately bit each of them once, leaving a red mark on their cheeks.
"Nao's just like a puppy!"
"Aaah! I'm going to bite you back!"
The three tangled together, trading bites.
In the end, they collapsed in exhaustion, sitting back-to-back.
Naomitsu tilted his head toward the sky, an endless expanse of blue. He knew danger was brewing beneath it.
And the source of that danger was Suguru Geto of Tokyo Jujutsu High. His ideals had gone astray, and he had begun targeting ordinary humans.
