|---|---|---|
| Early Projection Sorcery user | 2 3 | Uses rapid movement to get behind opponents, but Naomitsu defeats him by placing Divine Dogs in his path. |
| Improved Projection Sorcery and contact immobilization | 9 | Initially returns with a modest speed increase. His speed becomes too fast for Naomitsu’s eyes to track, though the effort exhausts him. |
| Increased strength, self-reported | 38 | Claims he has become strong enough to compete for clan leadership. The subsequent domain assessment leaves him exhausted and convinces him that challenging Naomitsu is hopeless 39. |
| Further improvement through special training | 49 | Naomitsu’s training is stated to have made him considerably stronger. He still has substantial hand-to-hand combat training to complete. |
History
Defeat and the Wager
Naoya initially bullies Maki and Mai. When Mai talks back to his mockery, he lashes out, prompting Maki to fight him. Ogi subsequently punishes Maki for the clash 2.
During another confrontation, Naomitsu intervenes with Divine Dogs, knocks Naoya down, and taps his forehead with a wooden sword. Humiliated at losing to a child nine years younger, Naoya blames a slipped foot and demands a rematch 3.
Naomitsu agrees only after establishing a wager: Naoya must become his lackey if he loses, while Naomitsu must kneel and call him “boss” if defeated. Naoya’s rear attack brings him directly into the Divine Dogs’ jaws, causing him to collapse in fright. After recognizing the Ten Shadows Technique, he is threatened into keeping it secret and addressing Naomitsu as his boss 3.
Toji and the Nue Training
Naoya attempts to trick Naomitsu into confronting Toji Fushiguro by describing Toji as weak because he lacks cursed energy. Naomitsu sees through the scheme, restrains Naoya, and pushes him into Toji’s path. Toji kicks him dozens of meters away; Naoya then pretends to be unconscious to avoid further punishment 5.
After Naomitsu returns injured from Toji’s training, Naoya challenges him again, believing his improved Projection Sorcery will secure victory. Naomitsu dodges his familiar rear attack and punches him in the abdomen, restoring their previous hierarchy 9.
Naomitsu then persuades him to fight Nue under the pretext of passing on Toji’s lessons. Naoya adapts to its aerial attacks, briefly immobilizes it, and collapses from exhaustion. Naomitsu uses the opening to complete the taming ritual. This lesson earns Naoya’s genuine acknowledgment of him, at least temporarily 9 10.
Life Around Naomitsu
Naoya becomes a regular sparring partner and source of clan information. He brings news of Toji’s plans, Gojo’s victory over Toji, and Geto’s defection, explaining that his position as clan heir gives him access to such reports 10 18.
He eagerly joins Naomitsu’s festival outing with Maki, Mai, Megumi, and Tsumiki. His playful behavior includes wearing a Kappa mask and complaining about carrying the girls’ prizes. Afterward, he escorts the others back to the estate while Naomitsu investigates a curse 11 12 13.
When Naomitsu leaves for Tokyo, Naoya is privately delighted that a potential rival is moving away. Nevertheless, he agrees to protect Maki and Mai, under threat of punishment if either is hurt 19.
Kyoto Jujutsu High
In 2011, Naoya enters Kyoto Jujutsu High alongside Aoi Todo and Noritoshi Kamo. Their fight at the school gates places Todo narrowly ahead, while Naoya and Kamo draw. Naoya deliberately avoids warning Todo about Naomitsu’s strength, allowing his classmate to challenge—and be humbled by—their teacher 32.
His assigned match against Nobara Kugisaki ends before it begins: she reveals that she has already obtained one of his hairs for her cursed technique. Naomitsu subsequently assigns Naoya basic fitness training 33 34.
Naoya later boasts about competing for clan leadership, but Naomitsu’s domain assessment drains the six participating students’ cursed energy. Seeing Naomitsu’s domain and Special Grade strength convinces him that such a contest is hopeless 38 39.
Hokkaido and the Clan Attack
Naoya is assigned to investigate Hokkaido’s barrier breaches with Naomitsu. Naobito secures permission for additional Kyoto students to accompany them, with the personal aim of ensuring Naoya returns alive. Naoya tries to refuse the dangerous mission but is forced to join 39 40.
He panics when the Special Grade disaster spirit Shuizhan appears. After the mission, Naomitsu criticizes his hand-to-hand skills and warns that he might not even be able to escape danger unaided. Naoya takes the warning seriously and concentrates on practicing escape skills 41 43.
Naomitsu’s eventual departure from the Zenin Clan renews Naoya’s confidence that he can succeed his father after graduation. His celebration is interrupted when he is dragged back to finish training. Later, he is seen running during the attack that engulfs the Zenin estate; the subsequent account of the clan’s near-destruction does not identify his fate 49 50.
Appearance
- Blond hair, including bangs he brushes aside and hair he sweeps back with a flamboyant flourish 5 9 38.
- As a child, he is described as standing a head taller than the two-year-old Naomitsu 5.
Personality
Naoya is proud, competitive, and deeply invested in becoming clan head. Losing to the much younger Naomitsu repeatedly wounds his pride, prompting excuses, revenge plans, and renewed challenges whenever he believes he has gained an advantage 3 9 38.
His bullying is selective: he preys on weaker people but becomes meek around those who can overpower him. Naomitsu’s threats and Toji’s violence quickly replace his swagger with fear. His later loyalty to Naomitsu becomes more genuine after receiving useful training, though ambition and opportunism remain 5 6 10 49.
Around familiar companions, he can be playful and cheeky. He enjoys festival games, embraces his position as Naomitsu’s lackey, and mischievously lets Todo underestimate their teacher. He also accepts correction when told not to call Naomitsu “boss” at school 11 12 32.
Abilities & Skills
Projection Sorcery
Naoya’s innate technique provides the speed central to his fighting style. His early use is identified as 24-Frame Movement 2 3.
- Rapid repositioning: Frequently circles an opponent and attacks from behind 3 9.
- Contact immobilization: A well-timed punch freezes Nue and prevents it from taking flight 9.
- Evasive advantage: Naomitsu expects Nobara to struggle to touch him in a conventional fight 33.
- Early limitations: Inexperience and imprecise cursed-energy control prevent him from remaining airborne against Nue 9.
- Predictability: Repeated rear attacks allow Naomitsu to anticipate and counter him 3 9.
Unarmed Combat and Conditioning
- Fights Naomitsu barehanded and delivers a full-strength punch against Nue 9.
- Draws with Noritoshi Kamo and is narrowly outmatched by Todo upon entering Kyoto Jujutsu High 32.
- His attack power is insufficient to inflict fatal damage on Nobara in Naomitsu’s assessment 33.
- Receives targeted fitness and hand-to-hand training, with escape practice becoming a priority after Hokkaido 34 43 49.
Information Access
- Uses his position as Zenin heir to obtain important jujutsu news 18.
- Reports developments involving Toji, Gojo, and Geto to Naomitsu 10 18.

- Megumi Fushiguro — Treats Megumi with overfamiliar friendliness and offers to help him become stronger, seemingly pleased to have a junior companion 11.

- Noritoshi Kamo — Classmate whose strength initially matches his own 32.
- Nobara Kugisaki — Senior student who defeats him through advance preparation rather than a direct exchange 33.
- Mechamaru — Assigned opponent during the incoming students’ assessment; the supplied account does not give their match’s result 46.
