Background / History
Choso is the eldest of nine Death Painting brothers, including Eso and Kechizu. Kinoshita explains that Kenjaku created the brothers while attempting to produce a vessel capable of housing Sukuna. He also identifies Kenjaku as Yuji Itadori’s mother, making Yuji and Choso brothers through their shared connection to Kenjaku. Choso initially considers this explanation plausible but demands evidence 3.
Before learning of his relationship with Yuji, Choso trusted Kenjaku and sided with the cursed spirits. Eso and Kechizu’s deaths leave him grieving and furious at Yuji, their killer. He also blames himself for choosing an alliance that placed his brothers in danger 3 5.
Appearance
- Build: Muscular young man 3.
- Hair: Black, tied into distinctive skyward twin tails 3.
- Complexion: Pale skin 3.
- Eyes: Crimson, with dark circles beneath them 3.
- Facial marking: A black marking across the bridge of his nose, from which blood emerges when he prepares his technique 3.
Personality
Choso’s younger brothers take priority over everything else. Questioning his devotion provokes immediate anger, but the possibility that Yuji is another brother is enough to interrupt his revenge. Once he confirms their bond, his hostility gives way to concern for Yuji’s safety—even though Yuji openly admits killing Eso and Kechizu 3 5.
His protectiveness is openly affectionate and occasionally possessive. He delights when Yuji worries about his severed arm, but gives Kinoshita an icy look for casually putting an arm around Yuji’s shoulders. Rather than demand punishment for his brothers’ deaths, he reassures Yuji and accepts responsibility for having trusted Kenjaku 5 6.
In combat, Choso remains tactical despite his anger. He coordinates attacks with Yuji, prepares defenses against his own wide-area technique, and turns a retreat into an opportunity to ambush Toji 6 7.
Abilities & Skills
Blood Manipulation
Choso controls blood for ranged attacks, physical reinforcement, defense, and restraint. His cursed-spirit constitution allows him to convert cursed energy directly into blood 6 7 27.
- Blood production: Does not rely solely on blood drawn from his body or stored in blood bags 7.
- Large-scale restraint: Floods a street with blood to catch Toji’s ankles and create an escape route for Yuji 7.
- Bleeding control: Stops his wounds from bleeding during the prolonged fight with Toji 7.
- Limit: Blood production and repeated technique use consume his cursed energy; the street-flooding maneuver nearly exhausts his reserves 7.
Convergence and Piercing Blood
Convergence compresses blood before Choso fires it as Piercing Blood, a high-speed, straight-line attack 3.
- Fires a shot that breaks the sound barrier 4.
- Maintains Convergence while wary of Yuji, allowing him to react immediately when Nanako attacks 5.
- Shoots through Nanako’s wrist, pinning her hand and Sukuna’s Finger to the ground, then destroys Mimiko’s doll with another shot 5.
- Can deliberately miss a target to deliver a warning 4.
- Limit: Its straight trajectory creates a friendly-fire risk. Toji neutralizes it by staying close to Yuji, forcing Choso to stop shooting 6.
Flowing Red Scale: Stack
Choso’s improved version of Flowing Red Scale controls blood flow and pulse to heighten physical performance. Stack pushes the enhancement further at the cost of greater bodily strain 5 28.
- Multiplies his reflexes and speed when Toji severs his right arm 5.
- Lets him barely follow Toji’s movements 6.
- Helps him keep pace with Naoya Zenin’s Projection Sorcery 28.
- Limit: Sustained use is draining and produces side effects during the fight with Toji 6.
Supernova
A technique Choso developed himself that bursts compressed blood into a broad-area attack. The narration contrasts Piercing Blood’s sniper-like precision with Supernova’s shotgun-like coverage 6.
- Blasts Toji several meters away after he dodges Piercing Blood 6.
- Supports coordinated attacks with Yuji, who shelters behind Blood Armor before moving into Toji’s blind spot 6.
- Limit: Its attack radius cannot be controlled precisely; Choso must also avoid the blood’s impact 6.
Blood Armor and Blood Gauntlets
Choso hardens blood into protective layers and striking surfaces 6.
- Blood Armor: Shields Yuji from Supernova and protects Choso’s heart when Toji drives Playful Cloud into his chest 6.
- Blood Gauntlets: Encases his hands in hardened blood for close-range punches 6.
- Limit: Toji can knock aside the gauntlets and later pierce Choso’s armor as his reserves decline 6 7.
Arm Reattachment
Choso restores his severed right arm while Yuji holds off Toji 6.
- Requests ten seconds to reattach the recovered limb 6.
- The passage does not identify this recovery as Reverse Cursed Technique 6.
Brother-Sensing
Choso can sense his younger brothers’ deaths. Nanako’s technique briefly makes Yuji feel as though he is dying, triggering chest pain and unfamiliar memories in Choso that confirm their familial connection 5.
- Recognizes Yuji as his younger brother through this sensation rather than relying only on Kinoshita’s explanation 5.
- The confirmation immediately redirects him from watching Yuji as an enemy to defending him 5.
Poisonous Blood
Kinoshita cites Choso’s toxin-bearing Piercing Blood against Uraume as an original-story example when considering how to improve his own Blood Manipulation 27.
- This reference establishes the poisonous property of Choso’s blood, but does not depict that attack occurring in the current scene 27.
Relationships
- Yuji Itadori — Younger brother and former revenge target. Choso accepts their bond, forgives Yuji for killing Eso and Kechizu, and fights alongside him against Toji 3 5 6.
- Eso and Kechizu — Deceased younger brothers. Their deaths drive his initial hostility toward Yuji and his guilt over siding with Kenjaku 3 5.
- Six other Death Painting brothers — Younger siblings whom Choso remembers while reconsidering his responsibilities as the eldest brother 3.
- Kenjaku — Creator and former ally whom Choso blames for turning the brothers against one another. Choso later attacks him directly 3 5 12.
- Kinoshita — Mediator who reveals Yuji’s connection to Choso. Initially threatened and distrusted, he receives Choso’s thanks after their brotherhood is confirmed 3 4 5.
- Toji Fushiguro — Opponent who severs Choso’s arm and overwhelms him and Yuji despite their coordinated attacks 5 6 7.
- Naoya Zenin — Defeated opponent. Naoya’s experience fighting Choso makes him cautious around spreading blood and explosive blood attacks in his later battle with Kinoshita 41 42.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shibuya: Revenge and Reconciliation
- Confronts Yuji in the station at approximately 22:08 and fires Piercing Blood to avenge Eso and Kechizu 3.
- Kinoshita interrupts with the claim that Yuji is also his brother. Choso agrees to suspend his attack until he can confront Kenjaku 3 4.
- Nanako and Mimiko’s ambush triggers his brother-sensing ability. He protects Yuji, destroys their means of restraint, and accepts him as family 5.
Battle with Toji
- Toji’s unexpected arrival costs Choso his right arm; Yuji buys time for him to reattach it 5 6.
- Supernova and Yuji’s Black Flash briefly put Toji on the defensive, but Toji breaks their formation and nearly pierces Choso’s heart 6.
- Choso spends his remaining cursed energy on a blood trap and a final Piercing Blood shot. Toji escapes both, and the brothers flee toward the distant battle 7.
Later Shibuya Confrontation
- In a later Shibuya sequence following Kinoshita’s rollback, Choso attacks Kenjaku after Mahito’s capture; Kenjaku’s domain forces the blood shot into the ground 7 8 12.
- After Uraume’s Frost Calm freezes members of the group, Choso rushes to check on Yuji while Todo rescues the affected fighters 13.
Post-Shibuya and Influence on Kinoshita
- Choso’s victory over Naoya is confirmed retrospectively; the fight itself is not shown in the supplied passages 41.
- His cursed-energy-to-blood conversion inspires Kinoshita to combine Construction with Blood Manipulation 27.
- Flowing Red Scale: Stack informs Kinoshita’s Ochre Scale: Modified, while Choso’s blood-flooding tactic against Naoya provides a model for Maximum Technique: Blood Red 28 38.
